L'estimation de l'âge chez le vivant est une des principales disciplines de l'odontologie médico-légale, souvent méconnue du grand public. Estimer l'âge du jeune adulte se rapprochant de la majorité peut être complexe et pour cela, plusieurs méthodes ont été proposées. Olze et al. proposent en 2004 une évaluation du stade de minéralisation spécifique aux dents de sagesse, inspirée des stades de Demirjian et al. Cette méthode d'estimation de l'âge suivant les stades de calcification est une méthode qualitative radiologique, où les stades sont observés sur des orthopantomogrammes. Il existe une controverse dans la littérature sur l'existence de similitudes et de différences entre les populations en matière de maturation dentaire. Notre étude vise à tester la précision de l'estimation de l'âge chez des sujets Français âgés entre 14 et 22 ans, à l'aide de 6 ensembles de données de références spécifiques à une population : Chine, Afrique du Sud, Inde, Japon, Pérou et Sénégal. Ces données de références sont toutes basées sur la méthode de Demirjian et al. modifiée par Olze.

The chapters dealing with methods of sex determination, age estimation of juveniles and age estimation of adults using the teeth are exhaustive and exacting and of critical importance to both "osteoarchaeologists" and forensic anthropologists. Authors Liversidge, Herdeg and Rosing provide very clear guidelines for the use of dental formation standards in juvenile age estimation, recommendations that are so obviously necessary at this time.
