This book was released on 1982 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is developed for estimating the radar cross section of the sea surface at HF (2-30 MHz) from two simple measurements made of the radar Doppler spectrum. These are: the ratio of approach/recede Bragg line energy, and the ratio of strongest Bragg line amplitude to average value amplitude of second-order backscatter at zero Doppler frequency. A nomograph is given, based on a theoretical model of second-order scatter developed by the author, which then allows one to determine the number of decibels the Bragg ocean spectral component is down from the classical Phillips asymptotic value, used here only for a reference. Comparison is made with some surface wave data for three different cases in which buoy data are available for comparison with multi-frequency radar data collected simultaneously at two different look angles. An example is also shown where such a calculation can be used to estimate the cross section of a target return existing within the same Doppler spectrum. Limitations of the technique are also discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Doppler spectrum of radar return from the sea at HF contains two narrow lines displaced upward and downward from the carrier frequency, resulting from backscatter off ocean surface waves moving toward and away from the radar, respectively. These Bragg lines indicate resonant backscatter which occurs for the ocean waves of length one-half the radio wavelength. The phase velocity of these gravity waves consists of two components; the first is determined by the wavelength and the second by the current component in the direction of wave propagation averaged over depth with an exponential weighting function that has a characteristic scale proportional to the wavelength. The Doppler shift of the radar carrier is determined by the wave phase velocity. Its variation with carrier frequency is thus related to the vertical profile of the current component in the radar direction by a Laplace transform; therein lies the principle of radio measurement of ocean current and its vertical shear. Radio backscatter experiments to verify the feasibility of such measurements were conducted using the radar operating at four frequencies covering the range from 3 to 30 MHz. The depth-averaged radial current deduced from the centroid of the Doppler-shifted sea echo experiments at 6.8, 13.3, 21.7, and 29.8 MHz showed fluctuations on the order of 1 cm/sec superimposed on temporal trends that reached maximum values of about 40 cm/sec. It is concluded that multifrequency backscatter ground-wave radar at HF constitutes a powerful technique for mapping current and its vertical profile in the top few meters of the ocean.

Book excerpt: During the Conference on Air-Sea Interaction in January 1986, it was suggested to me by David Larner of Reidel Press that it may be timely for an updated compendium of air-sea interaction theory to be organized, developed, and published. Many new results were emerging at the time, i.e., results from the MARSEN, MAS EX, MILDEX, and TOWARD field projects (among others) were in the process of being reported and/or published. Further, a series of new experiments such as FASINEX and HEXOS were soon to be conducted in which new strides in our knowledge of air-sea fluxes would be made. During the year following the discussions with David Larner, it became apparent that many of the advances in air-sea interaction theory during the 1970s and 1980s were associated with sponsor investments in satellite oceanography and, in particular, remote sensing research. Since ocean surface remote sensing, e.g., scatterometry and SAR, requires intimate knowledge of ocean surface dynamics, advances in remote sensing capabilities required coordinated research in air-sea fluxes, wave state, scattering theory, sensor design, and data exploitation using environmental models. Based on this interplay of disciplines, it was decided that this book be devoted to air sea interaction and remote sensing as multi-disciplinary activities.
