Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is developed to estimate the blade normal airloads by using measured flap bending moments -- that is, the rotor blade is used as a force balance. The blade's rotating, in vacuum modes, are calculated and the airloads are then expressed as an algebraic sum of the mode shapes, modal amplitudes, mass distribution, and frequency properties. The modal amplitudes are identified from the blade bending moments using the Strain Pattern Analysis Method. The application of the method is examined using simulated flap bending moment data that have been calculated from measured airloads for a full-scale rotor in a wind tunnel. The estimated airloads are compared with the wind tunnel measurements. The effects of the number of measurements, the number of modes, and errors in the measurements and the blade properties are examined, and the method is shown to be robust.

Book Synopsis Derivation of Rotor Blade Generalized Air Loads from Measured Flapwise Bending Moment and Measured Pressure Distributions by : Frank A. DuWaldt

This book was released on 1966 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A limited study of methods of deducing generalized air loads acting on a helicopter rotor blade or a propeller blade from bending-moment measurements is presented. A new set of basic functions called 'orthonormal-moment distributions' is proposed as the best set for fitting the moment data. The blade-tip deflections computed from pressure distributions measured on an H-34 helicopter rotor in steady level flight at 112 knots are compared with tip deflections derived by four methods based on use of measured bending-moment distributions. The degree of agreement between quantities obtained from the pressure distributions and those obtained from the moment distributions is encouraging but not satisfactory. Neither the lift nor the moment distributions were measured with sufficient accuracy for the purposes of the study. Deficiencies in the accuracy of the measurements and in the accuracy of the description of the blade mass and elastic characteristics obscure any meaningful differences between the various methods of operating on the moment data. Book Synopsis A Comparison of Lifting-Line and CFD Methods with Flight Test Data from a Research Puma Helicopter by :
Download or read book A Comparison of Lifting-Line and CFD Methods with Flight Test Data from a Research Puma Helicopter written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four lifting-line methods were compared with flight test data from a research Puma helicopter and the accuracy assessed over a wide range of flight speeds. Hybrid CFD methods were also examined for two high-speed conditions. A parallel analytical effort was performed with the lifting-line methods to assess the effects of modeling assumptions and this provided insight into the adequacy of these methods for load predictions.
Book Synopsis Aerospace Instrumentation by : M. A. Perry
Download or read book Aerospace Instrumentation written by M. A. Perry and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerospace Instrumentation, Volume 4 is a collection of papers presented at the Fourth International Aerospace Instrumentation Symposium, held at the College of Aeronautics, Cranfield. Co-sponsored by the Instrument Society of America, the symposium covers most aspects of aerospace instrumentation. This book is composed of 14 chapters and begins with a description of strain gauge transducers, an introduction to noise, filtering, and random function, as well as the data analysis facility designed to satisfy the needs in the fields of fundamental research and major power plant design and commissioning. A chapter examines equipment for the analysis of random processes for low frequence purposes. Other chapters explore the measurement and analysis of rotor blade airloads, the application of digital computer to instrumentation systems, the features of an altitude test facility, and the trade-offs existing between analogue and digital filtering techniques. The last chapters are devoted to test methods for aircraft performance, stability, and control characteristics determination in non-steady flight. These chapters also treat the operational experience of the B-70 flight test data system. This book will prove useful to aerospace scientists, engineers and research workers.

Book Synopsis Helicopter Theory by : Wayne Johnson
Download or read book Helicopter Theory written by Wayne Johnson and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 1126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the helicopter may be traced back to the Chinese flying top (c. 400 BC) and to the work of Leonardo da Vinci, who sketched designs for a vertical flight machine utilizing a screw-type propeller. In the late 19th-century, Thomas Edison experimented with helicopter models, realizing that no such machine would be able to fly until the development of a sufficiently lightweight engine. When the internal combustion gasoline engine came on the scene around 1900, the stage was set for the real development of helicopter technology. While this text provides a concise history of helicopter development, its true purpose is to provide the engineering analysis required to design a highly successful rotorcraft. Toward that end the book offers thorough, comprehensive coverage of the theory of helicopter flight: the elements of vertical flight, forward flight, performance, design, mathematics of rotating systems, rotary wing dynamics and aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, stability and control, stall, noise and more. Wayne Johnson has worked for the U.S. Army and NASA at the Ames Research Center in California. Through his company Johnson Aeronautics, he is engaged in the development of software that is used throughout the world for the analysis of rotorcraft. In this book, Dr. Johnson has compiled a monumental resource that is essential reading for any student or aeronautical engineer interested in the design and development of vertical-flight aircraft.
