Book Synopsis The Pig Book by : Citizens Against Government Waste
Download or read book The Pig Book written by Citizens Against Government Waste and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government wastes your tax dollars worse than a drunken sailor on shore leave. The 1984 Grace Commission uncovered that the Department of Defense spent $640 for a toilet seat and $436 for a hammer. Twenty years later things weren't much better. In 2004, Congress spent a record-breaking $22.9 billion dollars of your money on 10,656 of their pork-barrel projects. The war on terror has a lot to do with the record $413 billion in deficit spending, but it's also the result of pork over the last 18 years the likes of: - $50 million for an indoor rain forest in Iowa - $102 million to study screwworms which were long ago eradicated from American soil - $273,000 to combat goth culture in Missouri - $2.2 million to renovate the North Pole (Lucky for Santa!) - $50,000 for a tattoo removal program in California - $1 million for ornamental fish research Funny in some instances and jaw-droppingly stupid and wasteful in others, The Pig Book proves one thing about Capitol Hill: pork is king!

Book Synopsis The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict by : Linda J. Bilmes
Download or read book The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict written by Linda J. Bilmes and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2008-02-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true cost of the Iraq War is $3 trillion—and counting—rather than the $50 billion projected by the White House. Apart from its tragic human toll, the Iraq War will be staggeringly expensive in financial terms. This sobering study by Nobel Prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz and Harvard professor Linda J. Bilmes casts a spotlight on expense items that have been hidden from the U.S. taxpayer, including not only big-ticket items like replacing military equipment (being used up at six times the peacetime rate) but also the cost of caring for thousands of wounded veterans—for the rest of their lives. Shifting to a global focus, the authors investigate the cost in lives and economic damage within Iraq and the region. Finally, with the chilling precision of an actuary, the authors measure what the U.S. taxpayer's money would have produced if instead it had been invested in the further growth of the U.S. economy. Written in language as simple as the details are disturbing, this book will forever change the way we think about the war.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Congressional Budget Office study, prepared at the request of the Readiness Subcommittee of the House Committee on Armed Services, looks at the technical, operational, and cost issues associated with alternative transportation systems that DoD might develop and procure to reduce the time needed to deploy forces. The Department of Defense (DoD) is pursuing a variety of initiatives designed to reduce the time necessary to deploy combat forces around the world, including ongoing production of C-17 transport aircraft by the Air Force, development of concepts for the sea basing of military forces by the Navy and Marine Corps, and development of lighter, more easily transportable combat vehicles by the Army as part of its Future Combat Systems program. The study compares the advantages, disadvantages, and costs of six transportation alternatives: four that would use existing technologies and two that would develop more-advanced systems.

Book Synopsis Estimating DoD Transportation Spending: Analyses of Contract and Payment Transactions by : Nancy Y. Moore
Download or read book Estimating DoD Transportation Spending: Analyses of Contract and Payment Transactions written by Nancy Y. Moore and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In FY 2003, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) spent nearly $7 billion on transportation, travel, and relocation services from commercial enterprises. Given a continuing need to make the most of existing resources, including those used for transportation, the U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) asked the RAND Corporation to conduct a spend analysis of transportation purchases. This analysis of combined individual contracting action report (DD350) and PowerTrack (PT) data indicates that DoD has additional opportunities to leverage transportation spending, particularly where it uses tenders to purchase transportation services. With such leveraging, TRANSCOM could better manage carriers; reduce rates; and improve quality, delivery, and visibility of services. Such improved management of spending and carriers could reduce DoD's total transportation spending while continuing to meet user requirements. Bringing business currently conducted through tenders under contract could improve incentives and accountability for carriers. Bringing more spending under contracts would also help DoD better meet small business goals.

Download or read book 2019 Missile Defense Review written by Department Of Defense and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-19 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable.
