Book Synopsis From Dependency To Development by : Heraldo Munoz
Download or read book From Dependency To Development written by Heraldo Munoz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much has been written on the concept, nature, and implications of dependency in underdeveloped countries, there is a noticeable lack of comprehensive material on dependency reversal—the ways and circumstances under which dependency and underdevelopment can be overcome. Dr, Muñoz brings together in a coherent volume the alternative strategies for dependency reversal that have been posed by leading social scientists; the emphasis is on commonalities, differences, and theoretical and practical derivations. The book outlines the basic features of the dependency literature and clarifies the emergence and development of the dependency paradigm, its meaning, and its differences from other theoretical perspectives on underdevelopment. New aspects of dependency situations are also introduced. Significant alternatives to dependency are offered, taking into account varying geographical, ideological, and functional factors. Though no claim is made that all existing answers to development are included, this is clearly the most complete work available to date.

Book Synopsis Towards Sustainable Development in Industry? by : Luken, R.A. Hesp, P.
Download or read book Towards Sustainable Development in Industry? written by Luken, R.A. Hesp, P. and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2003-11-26 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book makes a timely and important contribution to the controversial area of development policy and practice. The country case studies provide valuable insights into ways in which countries have sometimes succeeded and sometimes failed in rising to the challenges of industry-led development, through which to raise income levels and social equity across an entire economy in an environmentally sustainable manner. The framework for the case studies and their interpretation provide a sharp focus for the considerable amount of detail that supports the analysis of different approaches in different national circumstances. The book's highly practical basis challenges accepted wisdoms of economic and development theory where it feels the need to do so. The editors and authors are to be commended on an excellent piece of work that will be of value to theorists, planners and practitioners in developing countries, and to international institutions aiming to support them.' - Clive George, University of Manchester, UK Many developing and transition economies have not yet undertaken the policy integration measures needed to enhance the impact of industry on sustainable development. In this original and insightful book, national experts from Chile, China, the Czech Republic, Pakistan, Tunisia, Turkey and Zimbabwe - countries which all have designated national sustainable development strategies - report on the extent to which recent changes in industrial, environmental and technology policies have more closely aligned industrial development with the aims of sustainable development.
Book Synopsis Economic Reforms, Growth and Employment by : Jürgen Weller
Download or read book Economic Reforms, Growth and Employment written by Jürgen Weller and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten to fifteen years, profound structural reforms have moved Latin America and the Caribbean from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market-oriented and open. Policymakers expected that these changes would speed up growth. This book is part of a multi-year project to determine whether these expectation have been fulfilled. Analysing the impact of the reforms on employment it is argued that expectations were not fulfilled with respect to the operation of the labour markets. The reforms limited the expansion of employment in some sectors, particularly in tradeable goods. They also created a bias in labour demad for better educated workers which exacerbates inequality. It is thus made clear that the region faces major challenges both in increasing the number of jobs and improving job equality.
