Book Synopsis Governing the Coastal Commons by : Derek Armitage
Download or read book Governing the Coastal Commons written by Derek Armitage and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal communities depend on the marine environment for their livelihoods, but the common property nature of marine resources poses major challenges for the governance of such resources. Through detailed cases and consideration of broader global trends, this volume examines how coastal communities are adapting to environmental change, and the attributes of governance that foster deliberate transformations and help to build resilience of social and ecological systems. Governance here reflects how communities, societies and organisations (e.g. fisher cooperatives, government agencies) choose to organise themselves to make decisions about important issues, such as the use and protection of coastal commons (e.g. fishery resources). The book shows how a governance approach generates insights into the specific forms and arrangements that enable coastal communities to steer away from unsustainable pathways. It also provides an analytical lens to consider important questions of power, knowledge and legitimacy in linked social-ecological systems. Chapters highlight examples in which communities are engaging in deliberative transformations to build resilience and enhance their well-being. These transformations and efforts to build resilience are emerging through multi-level collaboration, shared learning, innovative policies and institutional arrangements (such as new property rights regimes and co-management), methodologies that engage with indigenous cultural practices, and entrepreneurial activities, including income and livelihood diversification. Case studies are included from a range of countries including Canada, Japan, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, the South Pacific and Europe. The authors integrate theory with practical examples to improve coastal marine policy and governance, and draw upon emerging concepts from social-ecological resilience and transformations, adaptive governance and the scholarship on the commons.

Book Synopsis Ethnographies of Conservation by : David G. Anderson
Download or read book Ethnographies of Conservation written by David G. Anderson and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropologists know that conservation often disempowers already under-privileged groups, and that it also fails to protect environments. Through a series of ethnographic studies, this book argues that the real problem is not the disappearance of "pristine nature" or even the land-use practices of uneducated people. Rather, what we know about culturally determined patterns of consumption, production and unequal distribution, suggests that critical attention would be better turned on discourses of "primitiveness" and "pristine nature" so prevalent within conservation ideology, and on the historically formed power and exchange relationships that they help perpetuate.
Book Synopsis Climate Protection and Environmental Interests in Renewable Energy Law by : Paula Galbiatti Silveira
Download or read book Climate Protection and Environmental Interests in Renewable Energy Law written by Paula Galbiatti Silveira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about environmental and climate legal protection in the energy transition. The Paris Agreement has a binding commitment of holding the global temperature increase to 2°C while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. To cope with the negative effects of climate changes and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, one of the primary responses has been the deployment of renewable energy sources, transiting from fossil fuels to sustainable electricity production. However, renewable energy sources can also cause significant environmental impacts. Wind energy, for instance, can impact biodiversity, such as birds and bats, killing them when colliding with turbines and affecting their migration and nesting. This results in conflicts in environmental law. This book questions whether, in the energy transition, the generation of electricity from renewable sources to protect the climate is compatible with the protection of the environment, both interests in environmental law. To address this question, this book follows a legal-environmental perspective and assesses the common problem of solving those internal environmental conflicts in Brazilian and German law to understand and compare whether and how both legal systems solve the conflicts by compatibilizing the protection of the climate with other environmental interests. The legal analysis focuses on land-use planning and environmental licensing, assessing similarities and differences, and evaluating the results, identifying what one country can learn from the other.

Book Synopsis Neotropical Owls by : Paula L. Enriquez
Download or read book Neotropical Owls written by Paula L. Enriquez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive biological and ecological information about owls in the neotropic area. In addition the book covers topics such as threats and conservation strategies for these nocturnal birds of prey from 18 Neotropical countries. Owls are a good example of diversification processes and have developed evolutionary characteristics themselves. These species are found almost everywhere in the world but most of them are distributed in tropical areas and about a third of them live in the Neotropics. This biogeographic region has a high biodiversity and even share lineages of species from other continents because at some point all were part of Pangea. Although we still have much to know and understand about this diverse, scarcely studied and threatened group this work aims to be a precedent for future and further research on the subject.

Download or read book Bahia written by Alex Robinson and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2010 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Brazilians are far from home they dream of Bahia - of its powder-fine beaches and reef-ringed islands; of waterfalls in the Diamond mountains of the arid sertão, of cobbled streets and pastel-painted houses in Salvador. They long for capoeira and the rich spicy smell of Bahian cooking; the rhythms of axé and the colour of the world's largest carnival. "Você tem que ir." they say. "You must go." Bradt's Bahia shows the way to the World Heritage sites of Salvador (which has the largest collection of colonial baroque in the world) and the Discovery Coast rainforests; to the best of the beaches around the resorts of Itacaré, Porto Seguro and Trancoso; and beyond to the unspoilt island of Boipeba; the northern Linha Verde near Mangue Seco; and the little-explored coast of Sergipe and Alagoas states to Bahia's north.
Download or read book Slow Seasons written by Rosie Steer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woman's Own Book Club 2023 'A truly beautiful book. Rosie's writing makes me want to close my laptop, step outside, and appreciate the magic that each season brings' Jessica Elliot Dennison In her late-twenties, feeling utterly overwhelmed by the pace of modern city life, Rosie Steer found solace in the traditions she had been brought up with, influenced by her Scottish roots, that celebrated nature and observed the small steady shifts in the seasons. The Celtic Wheel of the year is an ancient seasonal cycle that aligns with solar events – the solstices, equinoxes and their midpoints. For each mini-season, Rosie shares nature notes for what we can look out for as the days get warmer or cooler, the nights longer or shorter, alongside activities, things to make, flowers or fruit to forage, seasonal recipes to enjoy and a modern take on the traditional celebrations. As the Wheel turns to Samhain on 31st October, we can enjoy foraging apples and berries to make Hedgerow jelly, watch the leaves turn golden, collect pine cones for a Pine cone garland and celebrate pumpkin season with Pumpkin and root veg chilli and Chocolate cake with pumpkin curd. By slowing down and paying attention to the ebbs and flows of nature, we can find moments of calm whenever we need them.
