Book Synopsis Essential Trade by : Ann Marie Leshkowich
Download or read book Essential Trade written by Ann Marie Leshkowich and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “My husband doesn’t have a head for business,” complained Ngoc, the owner of a children’s clothing stall in Ben Thanh market. “Naturally, it’s because he’s a man.” When the women who sell in Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic marketplace speak, their language suggests that activity in the market is shaped by timeless, essential truths: Vietnamese women are naturally adept at buying and selling, while men are not; Vietnamese prefer to do business with family members or through social contacts; stallholders are by nature superstitious; marketplace trading is by definition a small-scale enterprise. Essential Trade looks through the façade of these “timeless truths” and finds active participants in a political economy of appearances: traders’ words and actions conform to stereotypes of themselves as poor, weak women in order to clinch sales, manage creditors, and protect themselves from accusations of being greedy, corrupt, or “bourgeois” – even as they quietly slip into southern Vietnam’s growing middle class. But Leshkowich argues that we should not dismiss the traders’ self-disparaging words simply because of their essentialist logic. In Ben Thanh market, performing certain styles of femininity, kinship relations, social networks, spirituality, and class allowed traders to portray themselves as particular kinds of people who had the capacity to act in volatile political and economic circumstances. When so much seems to be changing, a claim that certain things or people are inherently or naturally a particular way can be both personally meaningful and strategically advantageous. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and life history interviewing conducted over nearly two decades, Essential Trade explores how women cloth and clothing traders like Ngoc have plied their wares through four decades of political and economic transformation: civil war, postwar economic restructuring, socialist cooperativization, and the frenetic competition of market socialism. With close attention to daily activities and life narratives, this groundbreaking work of critical feminist economic anthropology combines theoretical insight, vivid ethnography, and moving personal stories to illuminate how the interaction between gender and class has shaped people’s lives and created market socialist political economy. It provides a compelling account of postwar southern Vietnam as seen through the eyes of the dynamic women who have navigated forty years of profound change while building their businesses in the stalls of Ben Thanh market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launched in 1991, the Asian Yearbook of International Law is a major internationally-refereed yearbook dedicated to international legal issues as seen primarily from an Asian perspective. It is published under the auspices of the Foundation for the Development of International Law in Asia (DILA) in collaboration with DILA-Korea, the Secretariat of DILA, in South Korea. When it was launched, the Yearbook was the first publication of its kind, edited by a team of leading international law scholars from across Asia. It provides a forum for the publication of articles in the field of international law and other Asian international legal topics. The objectives of the Yearbook are two-fold: First, to promote research, study and writing in the field of international law in Asia; and second, to provide an intellectual platform for the discussion and dissemination of Asian views and practices on contemporary international legal issues. Each volume of the Yearbook contains articles and shorter notes; a section on Asian state practice; an overview of the Asian states’ participation in multilateral treaties and succinct analysis of recent international legal developments in Asia; a bibliography that provides information on books, articles, notes, and other materials dealing with international law in Asia; as well as book reviews. This publication is important for anyone working on international law and in Asian studies. The 2017 edition of the Yearbook is a special volume that has articles highlighting current international legal issues facing particular Asian states.

Book Synopsis Asian Socialism & Legal Change by : John Gillespie
Download or read book Asian Socialism & Legal Change written by John Gillespie and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immense process of economic and social transformation currently underway in China and Vietnam is well known and extensively documented. However, less attention has been devoted to the process of Chinese and Vietnamese legal change which is nonetheless critical for the future politics, society and economy of these two countries. In a unique comparative approach that brings together indigenous and international experts, Asian Socialism and Legal Change analyzes recent developments in the legal sphere in China and Vietnam. This book presents the diversity and dynamism of this process in China and Vietnam-the impact of socialism, constitutionalism and Confucianism on legal development; responses to change among enterprises and educational and legal institutions; conflicts between change led centrally and locally; and international influences on domestic legal institutions. Core socialist ideas continue to shape society, but have been adapted to local contexts and needs, in some areas more radically than in others. This book is the first systematic analysis of legal change in transitional economies.

Book excerpt: Vietnam Business Guide GETTING STARTED IN TOMORROW'S MARKET TODAY Kimberly and Brian Vierra have written the most useful guide I have seen for foreigners who want to do business in Vietnam. I've spent years in the country, but I learned a lot from this book. It's full of practical information about unique aspects of Vietnam's business culture; registration, legal and tax issues; working with local business partners; living conditions in Vietnam and industry-specific opportunities. Interviews with experienced expatriates bring the issues to life. The Vierras are very frank about tough problems such as corruption, but they also convey a real affection for and understanding of this wonderful country. Raymond Burghardt Former US Ambassador to Vietnam; Director, Indochina Capital Corporation Vietnam Business Guide is the book that every seasoned Southeast Asia hand, bellied up to a Saigon bar, says he ought to write. Be thankful the Vierras made good on this common boast. Unstinting, pragmatic, penetrating and incredibly accessible, this highly readable volume may not keep you from the suffering the pain of starting up, but if read closely, with a yellow highlighter may very well spare you the agony of undue blood-letting. There will be blood, but Vietnam Business Guide will mitigate the flow. James Sullivan Managing Director, Mandarin Media; Author, National Geographic Vietnam and Over the Moat Vietnam Business Guide provides practical and balanced information about Vietnam for foreigners to plan their first steps to enter the market. What separate this book from others are its reality and practicality, brought about by both the authors who themselves are entrepreneurs having walked the same journey and the experts who contributed their experiences on different topics throughout the book. The business landscape in Vietnam is speedily changing. Some facts, by the time you read the book, may need updating but still it serves best in providing newcomers essential starting points a should-read book for those who consider doing business in Vietnam! Vu Minh Tri General Director, Yahoo! Vietnam Co. Ltd. I believe that Vietnam Business Guide has been very objective and true to its purpose. It covers almost all relevant business and personal challenges that one would face in Vietnam, with the authors' firsthand experience shining through in their handling of culture issues and the Vietnamese mindset. Despite the constraints on size, it has sufficient details and a wealth of references to guide entrepreneurs and business executives in the right direction. Crisply written with interviews and real-life anecdotes, it makes for a very interesting read. A must-read book and an invaluable tool kit for anyone looking to Vietnam for business. Download or read book The Lê Code written by Ngọc Huy Nguyễn and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface by Oliver Oldman, Director of East Asian Legal Studies at Harvard Law School The Lê Code: Law in Traditional Vietnam is the first English translation of the penal code produced by Vietnam's Lê Dynasty (1428-1788). The code itself was the culmination of a long process of political, social and legal development that extended into the period of the succeeding Nguyen Dynasty and, in many respects, into the twentieth century. As is the case with cultures of other countries in East Asia, Vietnam has been widely influenced by China. However, even though Vietnam was dominated by China from the second century B.C. through the tenth century A.D., the spirit and culture of the Vietnamese people never disappeared. Like the traditional codes of Korea and Japan, the Lê Code incorporated many provisions from the Chinese T'ang Code, but the Vietnamese code contains original features which reflect the distinct socio-cultural and political realities of Vietnamese society. Thus, The Lê Code is a valuable instrument for gauging the extent of Chinese influence in Vietnam and the limits of that influence as well. In order to emphasize the Vietnamese innovations, many of which were extremely modern even by Western standards, and to point out the similarities between the Lê Code and its Chinese models, the authors have compared the Vietnamese code with several of its Chinese predecessors. They have enriched the text with substantial legal and historical annotations not only on the Lê period, but also on the dynasties immediately preceding and following it. The product is at the same time a work of history and a comparative study of the traditional Chinese and Vietnamese law. Only after their exile in 1975 have the authors, lawyers in Vietnam and experts in Sino-Vietnamese law, been able to devote the time and energy necessary to translate this work. They have used legal analysis, historical, political and social inquiry in order to compile a study of East Asian law that is more extensive in legal and historical details than any other Western language translation of an East Asian law code.

Book Synopsis Transplanting Commercial Law Reform by : John Gillespie
Download or read book Transplanting Commercial Law Reform written by John Gillespie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first sustained analysis examining legal transplantation into East Asia, this volume examines the prospects for transplanting a 'rule of law' that will attract and sustain international trade and investment in this economically dynamic region. The book develops both a general model that explains how legal transplantation shapes legal development in the region, whilst developing theoretical insights into the political, economic and legal discourses guiding commercial law reforms in Vietnam. For the first time, this book develops a research methodology specifically designed to investigate law reform in developing East Asia. In so doing, it challenges the relevance of conventional convergence and divergence explanations for legal transplantation that have been developed in European and North American contexts. As the first finely-grained analysis of legal development in Vietnam, the book will be invaluable to academics and researchers working in this area. It will also be of interest to those involved in commercial legal theory.
