Book Synopsis De-demonising the Old Testament by : Judit M. Blair
Download or read book De-demonising the Old Testament written by Judit M. Blair and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2009 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judit M. Blair challenges the common view that azazel, lilith, deber, qeteb and reshef are names of 'demons' in the Hebrew Bible, claiming that major works on the subject proceed from the assumption that these terms were demons in the ancient Near East and /or later, or that they were deities who became 'demonised' by the authors of the Hebrew Bible. Without questioning the validity of traditional methods she supplements the existing works by making an exegesis based on a close reading of all the relevant texts of the Hebrew Bible in which these five terms occur. Close attention is paid to the linguistic, semantic, and structural levels of the texts. The emphasis is on a close examination of the immediate context in order to determine the function of each term. The author notes different signals within the texts, especially the use of the various poetical/rhetorical devices: personification, parallelism, similes, irony, and mythological elements.

Book Synopsis Demonology for the Global Church by : Scott D. MacDonald
Download or read book Demonology for the Global Church written by Scott D. MacDonald and published by Langham Global Library. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Christians, how do we address the contentious and often disturbing subject of demonology? Our cultural paradigms pit us between the extremes of skepticism and sensationalism. Increasingly diverse Christian communities are in desperate need of a biblical understanding of the demonic that transcends cultural frameworks – an understanding that will challenge assumptions, rebuke errors, and unite Christians in scriptural truth. Demonology for the Global Church endeavors to provide the biblical and theological essentials for a unified Christian perspective of the demonic. Avoiding speculation and anecdotal evidence, Scott D. MacDonald roots his analysis in Scripture. He frames a biblical demonology in light of global and contextual concerns, offering an understanding that avoids the pitfalls of anti-supernaturalism and over emphasis. If the church is to effectively overcome its spiritual adversaries, Christians from around the world must stand and resist together. This is an essential resource for the global church, relevant to students of theology, institutional scholars, cross-cultural missionaries, local pastors, and all types of Christian leaders.

Book Synopsis Warding Off Evil by : Michael J. Morris
Download or read book Warding Off Evil written by Michael J. Morris and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Michael J. Morris examines aspects of synoptic gospel demonology; specifically, human responses to demonic evil. It is clear that early Christian demonology can be more fully understood against the background of early Jewish traditions. In the Dead Sea Scrolls, for instance, there are two fundamental ways by which protection against demons is sought. The first anti-demonic method is "exorcism," and the second is characterized by its preventative nature and is typically referred to as "apotropaism." Although many contributions have been made on the topic of exorcism in the gospels, less attention has been paid to the presence of apotropaic features in the gospel texts. Therefore, Michael J. Morris offers a timely examination of apotropaic tradition in early Judaism and its significance for demonological material in the synoptic gospels.
Book Synopsis Demon Possession by : John Warwick Montgomery
Download or read book Demon Possession written by John Warwick Montgomery and published by New Reformation Publications. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January of 1975, the Christian Medical Association gathered to deliver papers on the subject of demon possession. The essayists are Christians affiliated with a variety of academic institutions. The essays themselves explore the phenomena of the demonic in the Bible, in literature, on the mission field, in anthropology, legal history and psychiatric treatment. All of the participants accept the reality of the demonic but they are circumspect in their scholarship. If you are looking for a more substantial treatment than what you might find in popular booklets on the subject or on the fiction aisle, this is it; never before or since this symposium has there been a focused study of this magnitude on demon possession.
Book Synopsis The Devil, Demonology, and Witchcraft by : H.A. Kelly
Download or read book The Devil, Demonology, and Witchcraft written by H.A. Kelly and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belief in the devil and other evil spirits of the Christian tradition is a topic that has been widely discussed in recent years. Since the release of movies such as 'Rosemary's Baby' and 'The Exorcist', more people are wondering, Is Satan really dead? Is there such a phenomenon as obsession or possession? In 'The Devil, Demonology, and Witchcraft', Henry Ansgar Kelly postulates his belief that the existence of evil spirits is not probable and suggests that Christians would be better off acting on the assumption that they do not exist. To prove his claim, the author sets forth a history and analysis of the impact of demonological traditions developed within Judaism and Christianity over the centuries. He then considers the incorporation of these notions into early Christian teaching with the resulting demonological dotrines of witchcraft, possession, and temptation. Kelly's conclusion is that Satan is dead, and demonology should be eliminated from Christian dogma since, according to his thesis, these manifestations in the Bible reflect the beliefs of local cultures and not divine revelation. The present edition has been substantially revised and updated by the author to include an evaluation and critique of 'The Exorcist', wherein Kelly challenges William Peter Blatty's facts of the alleged possession in 1949 on which 'The Exorcist' is based.
