Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses and Essays Elsewhere we have spoken of the charge brought against the Church, not by her more reputable opponents, of her inferior morality. We venture to believe that no single human being who ever considered her claims, with the faintest genuine intention of submitting to her, should he find those claims to rest on justice and right reason, has ever been decided against submission by a frank conviction that in becoming a Catholic he would be accepting a lower rule of ethics. No student of her history and of that of the world, we are firmly convinced, has ever failed to arrive at the conclusion that her stand has consistently been on the side of good. Her vicissitudes have been great, her trials very many; and they would have been much less had she held the easy principles, the convenient laxity, the accommodating readiness to sacrifice justice for temporal, or selfish, advantage with which the ignorant and the vulgar-witted have credited her. In history she is seen, time and again, at variance with the mighty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Reviews, and Addresses The following papers are divided into volumes according to subject, and, within each volume, disposed in the order of time; the former, to facilitate reference; the latter, to preserve the clue of literary history. They thus form, as a whole, an autobiographical commentary on the larger systematic writings for which they have gradually prepared the way. Running as they do through the changes of thre score years, they can lay no claim to logical consistency. I can only hope that beneath the varying complexion of their thought some intelligible moral continuity may be traced, leading in the end to a View of life more coherent and less defective than was presented at the beginning. Most of the papers being strictly occasional, that is, rela tive to the events and ideas of their time, have interest, if at all, as reproducing some vanished aspect of public senti ment or social movement. They are left, therefore, to speak the feeling of their day, without any attempt, by soften ing its ignorances or removing its misjudgments, to correct it to the standard of the present intellectual latitude. A few very early essays have been excluded, as too pervasively steeped in the spirit of a discarded philosophy; but else, papers have been marked for rejection only where the interest was obsolete, or not desirable to revive. Book excerpt: A glimpse into a beloved novelist’s inner world, shaped by family, art, and literature. In her fiction, Claire Messud "has specialized in creating unusual female characters with ferocious, imaginative inner lives" (Ruth Franklin, New York Times Magazine). Kant’s Little Prussian Head and Other Reasons Why I Write opens a window on Messud’s own life: a peripatetic upbringing; a warm, complicated family; and, throughout it all, her devotion to art and literature. In twenty-six intimate, brilliant, and funny essays, Messud reflects on a childhood move from her Connecticut home to Australia; the complex relationship between her modern Canadian mother and a fiercely single French Catholic aunt; and a trip to Beirut, where her pied-noir father had once lived, while he was dying. She meditates on contemporary classics from Kazuo Ishiguro, Teju Cole, Rachel Cusk, and Valeria Luiselli; examines three facets of Albert Camus and The Stranger; and tours her favorite paintings at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. In the luminous title essay, she explores her drive to write, born of the magic of sharing language and the transformative powers of “a single successful sentence.” Together, these essays show the inner workings of a dazzling literary mind. Crafting a vivid portrait of a life in celebration of the power of literature, Messud proves once again "an absolute master storyteller" (Rebecca Carroll, Los Angeles Times).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Discourses: With a Biographical Sketch a Portrait This is the first attempt to present to the public a comprehensive collection of the Essays and Discourses of Dr. P. C. Ray, the well known Indian chemist. Dr. Ray's discourses on Scientific topics and his researches in the field of Hindu Chemistry would by themselves form no negligible material for a volume of this kind. But his interests have by no means been confined to Hindu Chemistry alone. Education, social reform, industry, politics, indeed every aspect of India's material and moral progress has claimed his earnest attention and the papers collected in this volume testify to his manysided interests. Thus his statements before the Public Services and the Industrial Commissions, are full of practical suggestions for the advancement of Indian education and industries. His paper on "the Bengali Brain and and its misuse" and his address to the Indian National Social Conference at Calcutta which contain some; trenchant criticisms of the Hindu Social polity evince his deep interest in subjects relating to social reform. His handsome tributes to the services of eminent patriots like Ananda Mohan Bose and Dadabhai Naoroji and his generous appreciation of the life and life work of Sir William Wedderburn testify to the silent interest he has all along been taking in he political advancement of this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Lectures on 'the Essays and Reviews': Delivered in Various Places, and Addressed to the Common People Certain divines have fastened on some things hard to be understood, and have turned them into positive and absolute absurdities. These divines are ministers of a Church whose Articles are pre-eminently Protestant - whose martyrs and reformers have been among the most illustrious. No impartial person can fail to recognize great piety in many of her Bishops, great learning in many of her presbyters. The Essays and Reviews do not contain Church of England doctrine. The book, however, has become not celebrated, for that belongs to excellence, but pre-eminently notorious. Unitarian ministers are reading it from their pulpits, and boasting that the Church of England is coming over to them. The Bishops of that Church have met to consider, and as a body have condemned it. They have unanimously denounced the book; it would seem also to be their duty to depose the writers of it. I have not leisure to make them what I should wish them to have been and I have no sub stantial alterations to introduce in the views and statements contained in them. The colouring of each belongs to the time when it was written. Few men, probably, who try to profit by the multiplied and various lessons which years bring with them, would write on any subject in exactly the same way, if they had to write on it again after a con siderable interval; but there is no sufficient reason to change that colouring in some of the earlier Essays. This could not well be avoided in arti cles written on similar topics or occasions; written, too, without any reference to each other, and in the expectation that each would be read by many, into whose hands the others would not probably fall. I must add, that my interest in certain great truths, has made me anxious to avail myself of every Opportunity to enforce them; nor do I feel as if they were urged more frequently, than their impor tance demands. Book excerpt: A selection of essays on writing and reading by the master short-fiction writer Lydia Davis Lydia Davis is a writer whose originality, influence, and wit are beyond compare. Jonathan Franzen has called her “a magician of self-consciousness,” while Rick Moody hails her as "the best prose stylist in America." And for Claire Messud, “Davis's signal gift is to make us feel alive.” Best known for her masterful short stories and translations, Davis’s gifts extend equally to her nonfiction. In Essays One, Davis has, for the first time, gathered a selection of essays, commentaries, and lectures composed over the past five decades. In this first of two volumes, her subjects range from her earliest influences to her favorite short stories, from John Ashbery’s translation of Rimbaud to Alan Cote’s painting, and from the Shepherd’s Psalm to early tourist photographs. On display is the development and range of one of the sharpest, most capacious minds writing today.

For five years he led such a quiet, uneventful life in this little, out-(f-the-world parish, that when it was announced that Mr. Russel (f the Scotsman was about to reside at Nenthorn House, he felt alarmed at the news. Mr. Russel would probably come to his church and listen critically to his sermons, and the prospect filled him with dismay, for Mr. Graham had a modest estimate Of his own abilities. But a friend to whom he confided his fears assured him that the Editor was not a church-goer. This, however, proved erroneous, for no sooner had the service commenced on the next Sunday than in came Mr. Russel. The sermon was got through somehow, and the minister was thankful to reach the seclusion of his vestry. But there the great man joined him, having come to compliment him on the quality of his discourse. The acquaintanceship thus begun ripened into afiection on both sides. At Mr. Russel's request, Mr. Graham became a contributor to the Scotsman. He wrote many a review and not a few leading articles, and his writings were not confined to ecclesiastical afairs. He continued to write for the Scotsman long after his friend's death in 1876, but at no time did his journalistic activity encroach upon his Church duties. His connection with the Scotsman did not lessen the regard in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
