The following three essays sequentially investigate three interesting topics that involve these themes. The first essay investigates the structural transformation in the United States from 1950 to 2005. In particular, we emphasize the role of trade in this process. We develop and calibrate a three-sector model to evaluate the contributions of various factors. It shows that, in addition to traditional explanations, such as non-homothetic preference and sector-biased productivity progress, international trade is another major source of structural change and is able to explain about 35.5 percent of the overall labor share decrease in American manufacturing. A further decomposition exercise estimates that inter-sector trade makes a moderate contribution, while trade imbalances dominate the trade channel and account for the recent contraction of employment in the U.S. manufacturing sector. This result supports the argument that persistent trade deficits have a substantial impact on labor allocations.The second essay analyzes the connection between two key variables, the manufacturing employment share and the investment rate, during economic development. Empirical observations document that both of them exhibit a hump-shaped pattern as income increases. Following the recent research on agricultural technology adoption, I propose that the modernization of agriculture is the primary mechanism that forms these two hump-shaped patterns simultaneously, thus, unbalanced technology growth is unnecessary to derive such a hump-shaped pattern. This simple cause helps to explain the similarity of structural transformation processes across countries. The long-run equilibrium of our model is on a generalized balanced growth path as defined by Kongsamut, Rebelo, and Xie (2001). In the third essay, we explore the interaction between trade and growth. In particular, we assume that the information of advanced technology is embodied within high-quality capital goods, which are produced by developed economies. Thus, international technology diffusion goes through the channel of trading high-quality capital goods, which establishes a direct causal linkage from trade to growth. The capital import is subject to the balance of payments constraint and must be financed by exports. We develop a formal two-country model, characterize the steady states, and discuss their dynamic features. Our model could shed light on several stylized facts." --

In the first two chapters I explore how China’s economic rise to the global stage affects resource allocations inside and outside the country, and in the third chapter I present a new method to infer risk sharing regimes pertinent to studying consumption behavior in developing countries. The first chapter studies how the "China shock"--the remarkable growth in China's productivity and trade activities since its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO)--affects China's labor market and real exchange rate dynamics. I apply a dynamic trade and spatial equilibrium model to jointly explain two distinctive features of China's economic growth: the structural transformation, as characterized by the reallocation of labor from agriculture to manufacturing and services, and the sluggish appreciation of the real exchange rate, a puzzle from the perspective of a standard international economics model. The model highlights the role of the subsistence sector in shaping the patterns of the structural transformation and real exchange rate dynamics. Using inter-regional trade and migration data, I calibrate the model to decompose the ``China shock" into productivity shocks and trade shocks and show that the two features above arise naturally from the interaction between the labor market and observed shocks to productivity and trade costs. I find that while productivity growth is the primary source of the structural transformation, the accession to the WTO explains about 35% of the rise in the employment share and 20% of the increase in the real wage in the manufacturing sector. Welfare gains from the "WTO entry" are 27% on average and would be larger if complemented by relaxing labor restrictions further. By accounting for trade costs, the subsistence sector, and labor market frictions, the model generates dynamics for China's real exchange rate consistent with the data. The second chapter studies the effects of real estate investments by foreign Chinese on local economies in the United States. This chapter is co-authored with Leslie S. Shen and Calving Zhang. We document an unprecedented surge in housing purchases by foreign Chinese in the US over the past decade and analyzes their effects on US local economies. Using transaction-level data on housing purchases, we find that the share of purchases by foreign Chinese in the California real estate market increased more than tenfold during the period of 2007-2013 relative to earlier years. In particular, these purchases have been concentrated in zip codes that are historically populated by ethnic Chinese, making up for more than 10\% of the total real estate transactions in these neighborhoods in 2013. We exploit the cross-sectional variation in the concentration of Chinese population settlement across zip codes during the pre-sample period to instrument for the volume of housing purchases by foreign Chinese. Our results show that housing purchases by foreign Chinese significantly increased local housing prices as well as local employment. Our evidence highlights the role of foreign investments in local employment, especially in times of economic downturns. The third chapter proposes a novel approach to test alternative theories of risk sharing--full insurance, self-insurance, and private information--in a unified framework. Given the prevalence of informal insurance in developing countries to share consumption risks, studying risk sharing regimes is important. A distinguishing feature of the framework presented in this chapter is that it accounts for aggregate shocks and does not require data on interest rates, an important advantage for studying rural economies. Applying the approach to a longitudinal dataset from Tanzania, I reject models of full insurance and private information and find evidence of self-insurance. An incorrect inference on the insurance regime could underestimate the welfare loss from risk by as much as ten times.

In 2011, it produced over 70% of the worlds GDP and employed nearly 50% of the worlds labor force. In the United States, those shares were around 80%. Meanwhile, total imports of services reached 6% of the worlds GDP, almost 1/3 of total goods imports, and it has been steadily growing at 2.63% per annum since 1995, 54% faster than goods trade. Despite its solid presence, services trade is still missing in most existing trade studies. It is often taken as a closed outside sector whose main purpose is to complete the equilibrium. The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate the importance of services trade to our understanding of comparative advantage and welfare implications of trade. In particular, I will introduce services trade and related data sources, provide benchmark quantifications of the gains from services trade, investigate the evolution of comparative advantage of services industries over time, and discuss how trade in services can interact with market entry and technology to generate interesting labor reallocation across sectors.The main results can be summarized as follows. First, standard gravity models fit services trade well. This allows us to apply the widely popular Eaton and Kortum model to services and estimate services productivities. Second, in a series of counterfactual experiments, the same amount of technological progress or friction reduction in services will lead to 3 to 4 times higher gains from trade than in manufacturing. Next, by estimating productivities for 35 industries, 17 in services, from 1995 to 2000, we found that while comparative advantage was weakened in all sectors, relative convergence among services industries was 75% faster than manufacturing industries on average. Such convergence eliminated 3.9% potential gains from trade from the median country, and reduced total trade volume by 25%. In addition, we estimated the speed of technological diffusion across industries within each country to be 3.6% and that across countries for every industry to be 6.0%. Last but not least, inspired by the negative correlation between trade intensity and employment share found in the swift labor reallocation from manufacturing to services in the U.S. since 2000, we discussed how interactions between entry choice, skill-biased technology, and trade may give rise to interesting patterns of structural transformation.This thesis offers basic quantifications of the macro impact of services trade on welfare and structural transformation. From these basic quantifications, we can infer that promoting services trade will unlock considerable amount of potential gains, much higher than the gains from goods trade. At the same time, strengthening services comparative advantage could further hurt employment in other sectors, particularly manufacturing. Fortunately, the manufacturing comparative advantage of the non-OECD countries has diminished in recent decades, reducing the relative cost of re-industrialization that US and other OECD countries are pursuing. Finally, as more granular services trade data becomes available, better economics and econometrics tools can be applied to improve our quantification and deepen our understanding of services trade for policy considerations.

The goal of this thesis is to improve our understanding on regional economics (the first and second chapters) and international economics (the third chapter). The three chapters aim to make theoretical and empirical contributions to the ongoing research. In the first chapter, I propose a model with multiple cities that allows inter-city interactions through costly trade, internal migrations, and firm relocation. The model is guided by the empirical observation that educated workers, larger firms, and skill-intensive and high-wage sectors are concentrated in larger cities. As a result, the model features multiple sectors, heterogeneous firms, and heterogeneous workers. The comparative statics of the model focuses on three shocks: falling transport costs, declining education costs, and increasing high-skill intensities. I show that: (i) there is a non-monotonic relationship between transport costs and the spatial income inequality; (ii) a structural transformation triggered by declining education costs reduces the inequality, (iii) the one due to a skill-biased technological change, however, predicts the opposite. The theoretical predictions are confirmed by a panel regression using the data from 32 countries with 1,962 regions. The second chapter investigates the impact of rising temperatures on internal migrations by exploiting historical variations in migrations and temperatures during three decades, 1970-2000. We find that, while internal migrations are mainly determined by economic factors such as income differentials and the degree of urbanization of locations, changes in temperatures also have a significant impact on internal migrations. The result from the location-level dataset suggests that an increase in temperatures induces migrations from poorer locations to richer locations within lower-middle-income countries, and it reduces migrations in poor countries but in a non-systematic way unlike lower-middle income countries. Then we aggregate the dataset at the country-level and find that an increase in temperature reduces the aggregate internal migrations in poor countries while it increases in lower-middle-income countries. These results are consistent with a Roy model with migration costs and suggest that rising temperatures have very different implications depending upon income-levels of countries. The third chapter examines the impact of debt restructurings on trade flows, allowing heterogeneous reactions to restructurings by types of restructurings: post-default and (strictly and weakly) preemptive. Sovereign debt restructurings can be implemented prior to a payment default and the previous work finds that preemptive restructurings lead to lower output losses while post-default restructurings are harmful (Asonuma and Trebesch, 2016). We investigate if there is a similar impact on trade flows. The paper examines dynamic responses of trade to debt restructurings by estimating the local projections. We find that post-default restructurings reduce import values by 8% and the negative effect is persistent until four years after a starting year of restructurings. The impact of post-default restructurings on export values is also negative and they reduce export values by 20% five years after a starting year of restructurings. On the other hand, we do not find a strong evidence that (weakly and strictly) preemptive restructuring reduce trade flows.

Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three essays on modern economic growth and structural transformation, in particular touching on the reallocation of labor across industries, occupations, and employment statuses. The first chapter investigates the quantitative importance of non-employment in the labor market outcomes for the United States. During the last 50 years, production has shifted from goods to services. In terms of occupations, the routine employment share decreased, giving way to increases in manual and abstract ones. These two patterns are related, and lower non-employment had an important role. A labor allocation model where goods, market services, and home services use different tasks as inputs is used for quantitative exercises. These show that non-employment could significantly slow down polarization and structural transformation, and induce significant displacement within the labor force. The second chapter, coauthored with Bart Hobijn and Todd Schoellman, looks at the demographic structure of structural transformation. More than half of labor reallocation during structural transformation is due to new cohorts disproportionately entering growing industries. This suggests substantial costs to labor reallocation. A model of overlapping generations with life-cycle career choice under switching costs and structural transformation is studied. Switching costs accelerate structural transformation, since forward-looking workers enter growing industries in anticipation of future wage growth. Most of the impact of switching costs shows on relative wages. The third chapter establishes that job polarization is a global phenomenon. The analysis of polarization is extended from a group of developed countries to a sample of 119 economies. At all levels of development, employment shares in routine occupations have decreased since the 1980s. This suggests that routine occupations are becoming increasingly obsolete throughout the world, rather than being outsourced to developing countries. A development accounting framework with technical change at the \textit{task} level is proposed. This allows to quantify and extrapolate task-specific productivity levels. Recent technological change is biased against routine occupations and in favor of manual occupations. This implies that in the following decades, world polarization will continue: employment in routine occupations will decrease, and the reallocation will happen mostly from routine to manual occupations, rather than to abstract ones.

Chapter 1 provides an introduction to economic development and gives an overview of this thesis. Chapter 2 reviews some theories and models about economic structure and structural change and points out that resource allocation is a critical factor in changing the economic structure. Five characteristics of economic structure and structural change are summarized. Essay 1 in Chapter 3 investigates the relationship between competitiveness and economic growth. Adopting the Global Competitiveness Index to represent competitiveness, we empirically show that there is a two-way causal relationship between competitiveness and economic growth. We further identify that the relationship between competitiveness and economic growth change in different development stages. Specifically, better competitiveness can enhance economic growth but not vice versa in developing countries. We therefore relate such a difference to the ability to transform resources into competitiveness. This is fundamentally a question about resource allocation. Finally, we link structural change with economic growth and show that enhancing competitiveness is equivalent to improving the capacity to change the economic structure. Essay 2 in Chapter 4 studies the impacts of sub-optimal resource allocation on economic growth by applying a new model to the case of the effectiveness of official development assistance (ODA). This new model analyzes economic growth through structural change by the difference between the observed and optimal levels of competitiveness. Regarding the positive and negative impacts of foreign aid on the receiving country in the literature, we show that the net impact of ODA depends on the value of bias caused by inefficient allocation of resources and the adoption of a biased value system. As a result, both positive and negative views of ODA in the literature are somewhat correct. In principle, ODA does work in the sense of helping needy countries providing they can allocate such additional resources efficiently. The cruel truth is that most receivers of ODA are unable to transform these resources to productive uses and even lower their economic growth. The development aid country donors or global institutions may therefore have to review their existing policy for granting aid.Essay 3 in Chapter 5 introduces a new framework to study two important structural issues in China: regional fragmentation and ownership distortion. We extend the output-oriented structural efficiency measure to include subgroups to evaluate potential gains of improving resource allocation within and among subgroups. The new framework is then applied to China’s industrial sector. Applying our new method for policymaking, the empirical results advocate prioritizing ownership reform over regional reform in China. Specifically, by improving resource allocation among different ownerships, outputs of the whole industrial sector can be increased by 21% of the observed level. In contrast, the potential gains of reallocating resources between western and non-western regions are less than 1%. Such a conclusion cannot be drawn from other existing models of efficiency analysis. Finally, Chapter 6 concludes the whole thesis.

Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three essays about the broad structural and technological changes to the US economy over the past fifty years, and their macroeconomic implications.Chapter 1 looks at the relationship between the rise of IT and the rise in industrial concentration. Over the past four decades, most sectors of the US economy have become significantly more concentrated: a small number of large firms now have a much larger market share. Using administrative microdata on firms in every sector of the US economy, including new administrative data on firm-level IT investments, I show that the IT Revolution disproportionately benefited the largest firms - an instance of what we might call scale-biased technological change (ScBTC). I document that the largest firms have invested more intensively in IT than smaller firms have, particularly in the most advanced and proprietary kinds of IT. I also document that larger firms are generally more capital intensive than smaller firms, and operate at higher returns to scale, but that large firms invest an even greater share of their capital expenditures on IT than small firms do. I discuss how production function estimates and a model of firm heterogeneity and fixed costs might be used to show how the decline in the price of IT ultimately led to the rise of US industrial concentration, and how this can be distinguished from competing causal theories about a fall in competition or a rise in competition. Simple calibration exercises can quantitatively generate large increases in concentration from declines in the price of IT.Chapter 2, joint work with Jan De Loecker and Jan Eeckhout, looks at the relationship between rising industrial concentration, and rising aggregate markups. We document the evolution of markups based on firm-level data for the US economy since 1955. Initially, markups are stable, even slightly decreasing. In 1980, average markups start to rise from 21 % above marginal cost to 61 % now. The increase is driven mainly by the upper tail of the markup distribution: the upper percentiles have increased sharply, while the median is unchanged. In addition to fattening upper tail of the unweighted markup distribution, there is reallocation of market share from low to high markup firms. This rise occurs mostly within industry for all industries. We also find an increase in profits. While there is some increase in overhead costs, the markup increase is in excess of overhead. We then discuss the macroeconomic implications of an increase in average market power, which can account for a number of secular trends in the last four decades, most notably the declining labor and capital shares as well as the decrease in labor market dynamism.Chapter 3 presents a broad research agenda going forward for understanding the macroeconomics of structural transformation, and specifically outlines some speculative theories about our basic theories about economic growth, and the business cycle.
