Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to improve the understanding of human behavior that goes beyond monetary rewards. In particular, it investigates social influences in individual’s decision making in situations that involve coordination, competition, and deciding for others. Further, it compares how monetary and social outcomes are perceived. The common theme of all studies is uncertainty. The first four essays study individual decisions that have uncertain consequences, be it due to the actions of others or chance. The last essay, in turn, uses the advances in research on decision making under uncertainty to predict behavior in riskless choices. The first essay, Fairness Versus Efficiency: How Procedural Fairness Concerns Affect Coordination, investigates whether preferences for fair rules undermine the efficiency of coordination mechanisms that put some individuals at a disadvantage. The results from a laboratory experiment show that the existence of coordination mechanisms, such as action recommendations, increases efficiency, even if one party is strongly disadvantaged by the mechanism. Further, it is demonstrated that while individuals’ behavior does not depend on the fairness of the coordination mechanism, their beliefs about people’s behavior do. The second essay, Dishonesty and Competition. Evidence from a stiff competition environment, explores whether and how the possibility to behave dishonestly affects the willingness to compete and who the winner is in a competition between similarly skilled individuals. We do not find differences in competition entry between competitions in which dishonesty is possible and in which it is not. However, we find that due to the heterogeneity in propensity to behave dishonestly, around 20% of winners are not the best-performing individuals. This implies that the efficient allocation of resources cannot be ensured in a stiff competition in which behavior is unmonitored. The third essay, Tracing Risky Decision Making for Oneself and Others: The Role of Intuition and Deliberation, explores how individuals make choices under risk for themselves and on behalf of other people. The findings demonstrate that while there are no differences in preferences for taking risks when deciding for oneself and for others, individuals have greater decision error when choosing for other individuals. The differences in the decision error can be partly attributed to the differences in information processing; individuals employ more deliberative cognitive processing when deciding for themselves than when deciding for others. Conducting more information processing when deciding for others is related to the reduction in decision error. The fourth essay, The Effect of Decision Fatigue on Surgeons’ Clinical Decision Making, investigates how mental depletion, caused by a long session of decision making, affects surgeon’s decision to operate. Exploiting a natural experiment, we find that surgeons are less likely to schedule an operation for patients who have appointment late during the work shift than for patients who have appointment at the beginning of the work shift. Understanding how the quality of medical decisions depends on when the patient is seen is important for achieving both efficiency and fairness in health care, where long shifts are popular. The fifth essay, Preferences for Outcome Editing in Monetary and Social Contexts, compares whether individuals use the same rules for mental representation of monetary outcomes (e.g., purchases, expenses) as for social outcomes (e.g., having nice time with friends). Outcome editing is an operation in mental accounting that determines whether individuals prefer to first combine multiple outcomes before their evaluation (integration) or evaluate each outcome separately (segregation). I find that the majority of individuals express different preferences for outcome editing in the monetary context than in the social context. Further, while the results on the editing of monetary outcomes are consistent with theoretical predictions, no existing model can explain the editing of social outcomes.

Focusing on Colorado, where four-day school weeks are especially prevalent, we show that switching all students in a county to a four-day week leads to 0.75 additional juvenile arrests for larceny per 1,000 residents. Effects on other types of crime are inconclusive; estimated signs on drug and violent crimes are negative, although neither attains statistical significance.

Chapter 5 is of a methodological nature. We separate accountability and incentives, and find several effects. Accountability is found to reduce preference reversals between frames, for which incentives have no effect. Incentives on the other hand are found to reduce risk seeking for losses, where accountability has no effect.

Social media has made content contribution an efficient approach for individual brand building. With abundant user generated content and social networks, content consumers are constantly subject to social influence. Such social influence can be further utilized to encourage pro-social behavior. Chapter 1 examines the incentives for content contribution in social media. We propose that exposure and reputation are the major incentives for contributors. Besides, as more and more social media websites offer advertising-revenue sharing with some of their contributors, shared revenue provides an extra incentive for contributors who have joined revenue-sharing programs. We develop a dynamic structural model to identify a contributor's underlying utility function from observed contribution behavior. We recognize the dynamic nature of the content-contribution decision--that contributors are forward-looking, anticipating how their decisions impact future rewards. Using data collected from YouTube, we show that content contribution is driven by a contributor's desire for exposure, revenue sharing, and reputation and that the contributor makes decisions dynamically. Chapter 2 examines how social influence impact individuals' content consumption decisions in social network. Specifically, we consider social learning and network effects as two important mechanisms of social influence, in the context of YouTube. Rather than combining both social learning and network effects under the umbrella of social contagion or peer influence, we develop a theoretical model and empirically identify social learning and network effects separately. Using a unique data set from YouTube, we find that both mechanisms have statistically and economically significant effects on video views, and which mechanism dominates depends on the specific video type. Chapter 3 studies incentive mechanism to improve users' pro-social behavior based on social comparison. In particular, we aim to motivate organizations to improve Internet security. We propose an approach to increase the incentives for addressing security problems through reputation concern and social comparison. Specifically, we process existing security vulnerability data, derive explicit relative security performance information, and disclose the information as feedback to organizations and the public. To test our approach, we conducted a field quasi-experiment for outgoing spam for 1,718 autonomous systems in eight countries. We found that the treatment group subject to information disclosure reduced outgoing spam approximately by 16%. Our results suggest that social information and social comparison can be effectively leveraged to encourage desirable behavior.

Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the effects of online review characteristics on consumers' information processing and persuasion. Online consumer review is a managerially important topic because consumers trust online reviews and make purchase decisions using online reviews. However, determining what constitutes a persuasive review is challenging since they contain multiple features, some of them unexplored. Moreover, some reviews are fake - when persuasive, these negatively influence consumer decision making. This dissertation addresses these issues by (1) proposing new review content and context features that may drive online review persuasiveness and (2) study how fake reviews can be better labeled by firms, as well as more accurately detected and processed by consumers. The dissertation is organized into three essays. Essay I explores how online review information content drives persuasion. The literature implicitly assumes that online review length is a proxy for information content. This essay disentangles both of these key content features and proposes a new information content metric based on Shannon's entropy. Two experiments and a secondary data study reveal that information content can be highly persuasive, independent of length, particularly under high purchase uncertainty. Essay II explores how social context features influence online review processing. Research shows that context features, such as website characteristics (i.e., not the content of the review itself) can moderate how such content persuades review readers. The essay studies the effect of two new social features on persuasiveness: (1) how cohesive a website's community is perceived to be, and (2) whether the reviewed product might be more likely to be used by multiple consumers, which I label "product collaborativeness". I expect that as website cohesiveness and product collaborativeness increases, consumers will be more persuaded by reviewers' characteristics as opposed to review content. Essay III explores how backstage review content features known to online platforms, but not to users, could indicate review suspiciousness. This essay also explores whether consumers find suspicious reviews useful. I find that consumers rate them less likely to be helpful compared to unsuspicious reviews, indicating that platforms need to take steps to prevent consumers from being misled by suspicious reviews. To this end, I further conducted a series of experiments, and find that digital nudging via brief visual alerts of suspicious reviews can be more effective than deleting them quietly, which is the current strategy of most platforms. In addition, I also explore digital nudging framing to maximize the effectiveness of this tactic.

Chapter 1: "Testing between Models of Smoking Risk Perceptions" Research in social and health psychology reports that smokers systematically underestimate the personal smoking risk. I build a model that captures potential determinants of smoking risk perceptions to investigate how smoking may cause an underestimation of the risk. The model is based on the premise that smokers have an incentive to be optimistic: because quitting may be hard, they find it reassuring to think that smoking is not so risky. Drawing upon the theoretical framework, I suggest two empirical tests of the model--one using survey data and another based on a laboratory experiment. Chapter 2: "Does Uncertainty Cause Inertia in Decision Making? An Experimental Study of the Role of Regret Aversion and Indecisiveness" Previous research has shown that in many situations there is clear inertia in individual decision making--that is, a tendency for decision makers to choose a status quo option. The status quo option may be the result of a previous choice, or may simply be the option designated as the "default." While inertia may simply reflect the fact that individuals view the status quo option as optimal, there are other factors that may explain this observed behavior. I conduct a laboratory experiment to thoroughly investigate two potential determinants of inertia in uncertain environments: (i) regret aversion and (ii) indecisiveness. A decision maker may experience regret when the outcome of a choice compares unfavorably to the outcome that would have occurred had she made a different choice. Alternatively, a decision maker may be indecisive among the options if she does not know the probability distributions over the relevant outcomes. I use a between-subjects design, with varying conditions, to identify the effects of regret aversion and indecisiveness on choice behavior. In each condition, participants choose between two simple real gambles, one of which is assigned to be the status quo. I find that inertia is quite large and that both mechanisms are equally important. Chapter 3: "Risk, Ambiguity, and Diversification" Attitudes toward risk influence the decision to diversify among uncertain options. Yet, because in most situations the probability distributions over outcomes are unknown, attitudes toward ambiguity may also play an important role. In a simple laboratory experiment, I investigate the effect of ambiguity on the decision to diversify. Participants have the opportunity to diversify between gambles; in one condition, all gambles are risky, whereas in the other all gambles are ambiguous. I find that diversification is more prevalent and more persistent under ambiguity than under risk. Moreover, excess diversification under ambiguity is driven by participants who stick with a status quo gamble when diversification is not feasible. This behavioral pattern cannot be accommodated by major theories of choice under ambiguity.

My dissertation is motivated by the desire to gain a better understanding of the transformational effect of the digital innovations, with a specific focus on the individuals’ decision-making behavior. First, I focus on a mobile gaming platform. To ensure the success of mobile games, game publishers need to keep their players engaged and, at the same time, seek monetization strategies that do not interrupt players’ engagement. Reward ads, a relatively new and increasingly popular in-app advertising monetization model in which players can voluntarily watch an ad in exchange for a reward within the game, can help publishers generate revenue without breaking the flow of the game. In this essay, I investigate how competence-related intrinsic motivation factors including players' feeling of competence (measured by (a) perceived difficulty and (b) perceived achievement), (c) the fluctuation of perceived difficulty, and (d) reward ads (which can enhance players’ intrinsic motivation and interact with players' feeling of competence) affect players' dynamic engagement state evolution. I find that players’ engagement transition is a complex process - as players interact with the mobile game over time and progress through the game, players may be motivated to different intrinsic motivation factors. Therefore, intrinsic motivation factors should be treated as a dynamic process because one factor may be more or less effective as players move to different engagement levels. Second, I study a social trading platform which is a recent innovation in the field of fintech. Social trading is a novel form of investing that allows retail investors to observe the trading behavior of other investors and to communicate through the news feed. Moreover, social trading allow inexperience investors (followers) to automatically follow the trades of experts (leaders) in real time. In this essay, I examine the determinants of the link formation and link dissolution processes, with an emphasis on the social communications among investors. The results show that the determinants of link formation and dissolution are asymmetric, and different types of social communications, such as posts and comments, have different implications for link formation and dissolution. In addition, the results show that financial performance and demographic characteristics are also important determinants of link formation. However, once a link is formed, followers mainly focus on financial performance in addition to social communication but not on demographic characteristics. The findings have important implications for both investors and social trading platforms.

The theory of games, properly understood, is a very broad approach to social interaction based on individually rational behavior, and it connects closely with fundamental methodological and substantive issues in social science and in ethics. An indication of the range of Harsanyi's interest in game the ory can be found in the first paper of Part B -though in fact his owncontri butions are much broader-and in the second paper the applications to the methodology of social science. The remaining papers in that section show more specifically the richness of game theory in specific applications.
