Book excerpt: The essays in this volume, written over the course of the last quarter century, are intended to contribute to understanding the role that Islamic symbols and identities have come to play in Northern India and, since 1947, in Pakistan. Above all these essays offer a challenge to current negative stereotypes of the Muslim faith, demonstrating that the religion is not characterised by political militancy nor dominated by static traditionalism.
Download or read book Pakistan Studies written by Shahid Raja and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-12 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 20 essays, each dealing with a different issue relating to PakistanFirst essay "Geological History of Pakistan: its Relevance for Today" is about the geological history of Pakistan i.e. how its landmass travelled from Madagascar nearly 90 million years ago and collided with the Tibet Plateau leading to the vacation of Tethys Ocean and formation of the Himalayas. It then discusses the implications of this event for present day Pakistan in terms of frequent earthquakes and pumping out the brackish sea water etc.Next three essays namely "Causes of 1857 Indian War of Independence", "Causes of Failure of 1857 Indian War of Independence" and "Consequences of 1857 Indian War of Independence" respectively deal with an important milestone of Pakistan's history namely 1857 Indian War of Independence (Indian Sepoys' Mutiny). First essay explains the context and socioeconomic and political causes of this uprising while the second enumerates the reasons for its failure. In the third one, I have tried to highlight the importance of this event by pinpointing the dozen or so trends which played an important role and are still playing in the countries of the Subcontinent.Next two essays namely "Two Nation's Theory: Myths and Reality" and "Pakistan Ideology: Myths and Contents" respectively deal with two very important issues which are invariably and unfortunately confused with each other. I have tried to clarify that the Two Nations Theory was not the brainchild of Indian Muslims but Hindu Revivalists also played a crucial role in its evolution. It was the crystallisation of objective realties of the times and lost its relevance once the objective was achieved and was replaced by Pakistan ideology which is the relevant narrative for today's Pakistan. In this essay I have tried to pinpoint the its sources and and also its main features. This is a new interpretation of Pakistan Ideology. In chapter 8 titled "Pakistan's Difficulties at Independence", an attempt has been made to explain the difficulties the new state of Pakistan faced at the time of its independence in 1947.It will give you a perspective to assess the performance of Pakistan economy during the last seven decadesIn chapter 9 titled "What is the National Interest of Pakistan" using the framework for defining the national interest of a country, national interest of Pakistan has been explained in detail.Chapter 10 "Why Armed Forces Have Dominated Pakistan" as the title suggests examines the reasons why the armed forces of Pakistan have been playing larger than life role in the body politic of PakistanNext three essays namely "Political Economy of Pakistan under General Ayyub", "Political Economy of Pakistan under Z.A. Bhutto" and "Political Economy of Pakistan under General Zia" respectively deal with the performance of three controversial epochs of the political economy of Pakistan. Essay in Chapter 14 i.e. "Challenge of Democratic Development in Pakistan" tries to answer how the process of democratic development can be accelerated in the country ."Why do Countries Break? Separation of East Pakistan and Lessons Learnt." has been discussed in chapter15 with reference to the separation of East Pakistan from its western wing in 1971 and becoming a separate independent country of Bangladesh- a very traumatic event for every Pakistani. This essay pinpoints the historical reasons for this event which was bound to happen sooner or later. It also lists some of the lessons we must learn to avoid occurrence of the same again.Chapter 16 and 17 are about the political economy of Pakistan. First one i.e. "Evolution of Political Economy of Pakistan" explains the distinguishing features of the economic structure of Pakistan while "Pakistan's Economic Potential and Prospects" explains the strengths of the Pakistan economy as well as the opportunities available for realising its full potentia

This book was released on 2020-08-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has there been a 'revival' of Pakistani cinema? Or can the very question be put to scrutiny? Can we think beyond a national cinema, and instead simply think with films to explore the fraught politics and aspirations of our times? Love, War & Other Longings brings together historians, anthropologists, artists, and film-makers to offer new lines of enquiry that probe the tensions between cinema's past and present, absences and the archive, seduction and respectability, class and consumption, as well as genre and censorship. At times experimental in form, the essays seek to draw readers into conversations that engage political theory and postcolonial history, and become part of ongoing writing, thinking, and the making of films in Pakistan and the global south more broadly.

Download or read book Delhi By Heart written by Raza Rumi and published by Harper. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sensitively written account of a Pakistani writer's discovery of Delhi Why, asks Raza Rumi, does the capital of another country feel like home? How is it that a man from Pakistan can cross the border into 'hostile' territory and yet not feel 'foreign'? Is it the geography, the architecture, the food? Or is it the streets, the festivals and the colours of the subcontinent, so familiar and yes, beloved... As he takes in the sights, from the Sufi shrines in the south to the markets of Old Delhi, from Lutyens' stately mansions to Ghalib's crumbling abode, Raza uncovers the many layers of the city. He connects with the richness of the Urdu language, observes the syncretic evolution of mystical Islam in India and its deep connections with Hindustani classical music - so much a part of his own selfhood. And every so often, he returns to the refuge of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, the twelfth-century pir, whose dargah still reverberates with music and prayer every evening. His wanderings through Delhi lead Raza back in time to recollections of a long-forgotten Hindu ancestry and to comparisons with his own city of Lahore - in many ways a mirror image of Delhi. They also lead to reflections on the nature of the modern city, the inherent conflict between the native and the immigrant and, inevitably, to an inquiry into his own identity as a South Asian Muslim. Rich with history and anecdote, and conversations with Dilliwalas known and unknown,Delhi By Heart offers an unusual perspective and unexpected insights into the political and cultural capital of India.

Book Synopsis Development Challenges Confronting Pakistan by : Anita M. Weiss
Download or read book Development Challenges Confronting Pakistan written by Anita M. Weiss and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global scholarly community concerned with development and social transformation has identified explicit "structural impediments" that constrain countries’ efforts to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable social development. The UNDP, in launching its Millennium Development Goals, contends that there are practical, proven solutions to breaking out of the poverty traps that entangle poor countries. In Pakistan, there has been limited substantive research conducted to identify the unique blend of structural impediments to development that prevail in the country today. Indeed, Pakistan’s prospects to promote viable, sustainable social development appear bleaker today than a decade ago. Development Challenges Confronting Pakistan seeks to rectify this void by bringing together scholars and practitioners—many of them from Pakistan—to provide a scholarly understanding of the structural impediments, or barriers, that have negative effects on Pakistan’s ability to eliminate poverty, promote social justice and implement policies to promote equity. This book will be an essential tool for analysis, study and practice. Its publication is indeed a major event in South Asian scholarship.
Book Synopsis The Future of Pakistan by : Stephen P. Cohen
Download or read book The Future of Pakistan written by Stephen P. Cohen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With each passing day, Pakistan becomes an even more crucial player in world affairs. Home of the world's second-largest Muslim population, epicenter of the global jihad, location of perhaps the planet's most dangerous borderlands, and armed with nuclear weapons, this South Asian nation will go a long way toward determining what the world looks like ten years from now. The Future of Pakistan presents and evaluates several scenarios for how the country will develop, evolve, and act in the near future, as well as the geopolitical implications of each. Led by renowned South Asia expert Stephen P. Cohen, a team of authoritative contributors looks at several pieces of the Pakistan puzzle. The book begins with Cohen's broad yet detailed overview of Pakistan, placing it within the context of current-day geopolitics and international economics. Cohen's piece is then followed by a number of shorter, more tightly focused essays addressing more specific issues of concern. Cohen's fellow contributors hail from America, Europe, India, and Pakistan itself, giving the book a uniquely international and comparative perspective. They address critical factors such as the role and impact of radical groups and militants, developments in specific key regions such as Punjab and the rugged frontier with Afghanistan, and the influence of—and interactions with—India, Pakistan's archrival since birth. The book also breaks down relations with other international powers such as China and the United States. The all-important military and internal security apparatus come under scrutiny, as do rapidly morphing social and gender issues. Political and party developments are examined along with the often amorphous division of power between Islamabad and the nation's regions and local powers. Uncertainty about Pakistan's trajectory persists. The Future of Pakistan helps us understand the current circumstances, the relevant actors and their motivation, the crit
