Book excerpt: The thesis consists of four core essays which focus on important issues relating to international trade, growth and inequality. The first essay examines the determinants of trade based on global production sharing (network trade) by building a theoretical framework and empirically testing it using a panel dataset. Over the past four decades, network trade has grown at a much faster rate than total world manufacturing trade. Identification of the determinants of this emerging trade pattern is, therefore, important for informing trade policy debates. The model used in the empirical analysis captures a number of important explanatory variables ignored in the previous literature. A range of panel data estimation techniques is used in the model. The results suggest that technology, institutions and macroeconomic stability all play a significant role in determining inter-country differences in network trade. The paper concludes with a discussion on the challenges for policy makers in their attempt to reap gains from global production sharing. The second essay studies the transmission of exchange rate changes into import prices (exchange rate pass-through) in the presence of global production sharing. The chapter builds and simulates a model, which postulates that exchange rate pass-through is lower for network trade compared to final goods trade. It is hypothesised that trade in parts and components, within network trade, is relatively sheltered from exchange rate movements because network trade is largely 'relationship-specific,' including intra-firm trade. Empirically, exchange rate pass-through is examined using a new dataset of manufacturing import prices compiled from the trade price database of the US Bureau of Labour Statistics. The findings indicate that the degree of exchange rate pass-through into the import prices of parts and components is considerably lower than that for import prices of final goods. The third essay examines patterns and determinants of global production sharing with an emphasis on how Australian manufacturing fits into global production sharing. Though Australia is a minor player in global production sharing, there is evidence that Australian manufacturing has a distinct competitive edge in specialized, skill-intensive tasks in several industries including aircraft, medical devices, machine tools, measuring and scientific equipment and photographic equipment. Specialization within global production sharing in high value-to-weight components and final goods, which are suitable for air transport, helps Australian manufacturing to overcome the 'tyranny of distance' in world trade. Institutions and technological base give Australia a competitive edge within global production sharing. The last essay examines the impact of inequality and poverty on economic growth. Recent research has highlighted a negative impact of inequality on economic growth. The paper re-evaluates this hypothesis, focusing on both inequality and poverty and their interaction. The paper initially replicates previous results, showing that inequality has a negative impact on growth. However, it is shown that after taking into account both inequality and poverty, the negative effect of inequality on growth appears to be concentrated amongst countries with high poverty. This finding makes a case for policies targeted towards alleviating poverty, rather than policies that redistribute without addressing absolute poverty.

The first essay is an empirical analysis of trade and trade partner inequality, in the context of gravity, covering 128 exporters and 126 importers for years 1982-2000. It reveals import share's negative average effect on income per capita, export share's positive average effect on income per capita, differential effects of trade in favor of more developed countries, and inequality-inducing impact of contemporary trade. The second essay is an empirical analysis of trade and intranational inequality, covering 151 countries for years 1978-2010. It tests three major existing hypotheses that relate the effect of trade openness on intranational inequality. The analysis is then extended to test a non-linear hypothesis, which predicts that the effect of trade openness on intranational inequality is conditional on the level of trade openness. The results indicate that a U shape effect is significant with all three trade openness measures: export share, import share, and trade share. The third essay is a theoretical analysis of trade and international inequality, in the context of dynamic gravity. Key novel expressions are derived: balance condition and barrier-flow dynamic gravity relationship. The balance condition shows that growth of a country's market share and trade ease puts downward pressure on the market share and trade ease of other countries.The barrier-flow dynamic gravity relationship shows that relative trade flows growth rate is inversely proportional to relative trade barriers growth rate. The dissertation contributes to our understanding of trade's impacts on trade partner inequality, intranational inequality, and international inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three essays on the processes of economic growth. In the first chapter I show how growth behaves when protesting occurs. I continue with the topic of protests in the second chapter, where I consider the effect of political unrest on economic inequality. In the final chapter, I study the impact joining the WTO has on the composition of trade flows that may affect long term growth. Protests occur regularly and at times involve millions of people, often disrupting economic activity. In Chapter 1 I examine the link between economic growth and protest events using the Global Database of Events, Language and Tone (GDELT). This dataset provides daily observations on protests and similar events for a panel of 150 countries over the past three decades. I show that protests have a significant negative relationship with short term growth. On average, protest activity is associated with a drop in growth of at most 1.5 percentage points of growth rate in the year of the protest event(s) with this effect persisting in subsequent years. Further, I reject the hypothesis that protesting can improve or damage GDP growth in the longer run. Protests also impact negatively other aggregate outcomes that may serve as channels through which protesting influences the growth rate. I establish that during the year of the protest gross capital formation declines, while unemployment goes up. The magnitudes of these effects are non-trivial even though the overall impact on economic growth is quantitatively small. Protesting might affect the level of inequality in a country through post-protest redistributive policies. In Chapter 2 I study the relationship between protesting and inequality using a panel of 74 countries over 1979-2012. I find that across most of the specifications the effect of protesting on inequality, determined by the Gini Index, is negative and statistically significant. On average, a 1% increase in protest activity decreases the Gini index immediately by 0.01 points. These results are robust to different ways of defining the protest variable itself such as number of protests or the intensity of protesting measured by the media coverage. A binary measure based on the intensity of protesting indicates that a large enough protest reduces inequality, lowering the Gini Index by 1.6 -- 2.1 points. When countries join the World Trade Organization (WTO), they gain mostly unhindered access to new markets allowing them to trade more. While it has been shown in the literature that after accession to the WTO volume of trade increases for the new members, it is unclear what effect, if any, the membership has on the composition of trade. Developing countries may be negatively affected through crowding-out of vital sectors due to foreign competition or positively --- through strengthening of the sectors with comparative advantage. Using gravity equation estimation I show that while the volume of exports and imports increases after countries become WTO members, the resulting changes in the composition of trade differ depending on the sector and the income level. For example, in a developing country accession to the WTO increases the share of textile sector in total imports by 0.5%, while the same sector's share decreases by 33% when it comes to exports.

In the first chapter, I study how international trade affects wage inequality within and between firms. Using matched employer-employee data from Germany, I document that the firm-size wage premium is higher for skilled compared to less-skilled workers and that larger firms disproportionately employ more skilled workers. I show, using a new quantitative framework, that non-homothetic production and monopsonistic competition in labor markets can rationalize these reduced-form findings. To estimate the model, I propose a new econometric method to identify non-homotheticity in the presence of upward-sloping labor supply curves separately. Counterfactual exercises quantitatively show that the mechanism implies sizeable distributional effects of trade. The second chapter, co-authored with Yann Koby, combines reduced-form evidence with a new model of a dynamic multi-country and multi-sector economy to study the link between trade and structural transformation. The model accounts for major drivers of structural change—including sector-biased technological change and income effects, as well as technological and factor-driven motives for trade. We provide a characterization of the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium. We quantify the model to the years 1995 to 2011 and then use it to discuss the decline in U.S. manufacturing and the role of service trade in influencing employment in the manufacturing sector. The third chapter, co-authored with Bastian Krieger, studies the effect of trade in services on firms' innovation activities. We combine unique micro-data from Germany with a simple theory of international trade and innovation to provide causal evidence that trade in innovation services increases innovative activities in firms, accounting for market size and competition effects of trade integration.
