Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Greek Literature I harboured for many years the project of producing these five Essays on Greek together with others on Latin and English Literature; but I have been advised on good authority that such a collection would be incongruous and unacceptable. I had thought of endeavouring to bring the studies more up-to-date; but in some cases there seemed little to add, and in others such an attempt would have run counter to the original design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Tradition: Essays in the Reconstruction, of Ancient Thought When Mr. Thomson's fine Studies in the Odyssey appeared, I happened to notice one solemn reviewer who, after four lines of earnest misdescription, con cluded by expressing his grief that any University had published such a book. It should have been strangled unborn and its author effectually silenced. Meditating on the point of view disclosed, I remembered that exactly the same thing had been said about one of my own early books. And, on further reflection, I recalled at least three other scholars, now occupying University Chairs or similar positions, whose early writings were welcomed in the same way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classical Studies: Essays on Ancient Literature and Art Ancient Literature But the Greek and Roman classics stand at the beginning and at the source of European culture. Nothing can displace them. Homer is the fountain-head of all European poetry and art. There he stands, venerable with nearly thirty centuries, touching his heroic harp to strains of unsurpassed, nay, unapproachable excellence and grandeur. All the features of a great heroic age, -the chivalry of the classical world, - from which European civilization dates, and political and domestic order take their rise, - stand forth in living reality, in his immortal pictures. There he stands, radiant with the beams of the early Grecian morning, as jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain Who is to drive him from his station there! And how, then, is Homer to pass from the memory and the hearts of men? Impossible. It is not a question to be decided by a few petty and short-sighted utilitarian views. Homer's reign is firmly established over the literary world, and if any nation should ever become so barbarous as to banish him from their schools, the penalty and disgrace would be their own. The language of Homer, as a picturesque, melodious, and enchanting instrument of thought, has never been surpassed. Now these great ancients have been, time out of mind, the teachers of the civilized world. They form a common bond, which unites the cultivated minds Of all nations and ages together. He who cuts himself off from the classics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book one of the world's leading Hellenists brings together his many contributions over four decades to our understanding of early Greek literature, above all of elegiac poetry and its relation to fifth-century prose historiography, but also of early Greek epic, iambic, melic and epigrammatic poetry. Many chapters have become seminal, e.g. that which first proposed the importance of now-lost long narrative elegies, and others exploring their performance contexts when papyri published in 1992 and 2005 yielded fragments of such long poems by Simonides and Archilochus. Another chapter argues against the widespread view that Sappho composed and performed chiefly for audiences of young girls, suggesting instead that she was a virtuoso singer and lyre-player, entertaining men in the elite symposia whose verbal and musical components are explored in several other chapters of the book. Two more volumes of collected papers will follow devoted to later Greek literature and culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxford Book of American Essays The customary antithesis between American litera ture and English literature is unfortunate and mislead ing in that it seems to exclude American authors from the noble roll of those who have contributed to the literature of our mother-tongue. Of course, when we consider it carefully we cannot fail to see that the literature of a lan guage is one and indivisible and that the nativity or the domicile of those who make it matters nothing. Just as Alexandrian literature is Greek, SO American literature is English; and as Theocritus demands inclusion in any ac count Oi Greek literature, SO Thoreau cannot be omitted from any history of English literature as a whole. The works of Anthony Hamilton and Rousseau, Mme. De' Stael and M. Maeterlinck are not more indisputably a part of the literature Of the French language than the works of Franklin and Emerson, of Hawthorne and Poe are part of the literature of the English language. Theocritus may never have set foot on the soil of Greece, and Thoreau never adventured himself on the Atlantic to Visit the island home of his ancestors; yet the former expressed himself in Greek and the latter in English, - and how can either be neglected in any comprehensive survey of the literature of his own tongue? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Genius and Its Influence: Select Essays and Extracts Francaise or even the suggested characterization of the English in Jespersen s Growth and Structure of the English Language, are rare. Whether any considerable number exists for the Hebrew race I cannot say; one thinks, of course, of Matthew Arnold's 'hebraism and Hellenism, ' and the like, which would hardly con tent the scholar and the scientist. If the number is large, it would be well to collect them and publish certain excellent specimens. Meanwhile, is it not worth noting that for the Greek race, which would commonly be chosen as typical of humanity, we have very many of these characterizations? So far as I am aware, the present volume, designed in the main for other purposes, constitutes the first attempt to present a body of such material. Finally, I have the pleasant duty of thanking several Of my friends and pupils for direct assistance and helpful suggestions, of which I availed myself particularly in the translations; and of expressing my obligations to the authors and publishers who have kindly allowed me to reprint copyright material. These obligations, as I hope, are all fully recorded in the proper places. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Aspects of the Greek Genius Stray touches of modern sentiment, and even of what may be called romanticism, are met with already in the strictly classical period of Greek literature; and these anticipations of a new era occur with increasing frequency in the later Greek poets. Of the literary products of the Hellenistic age few complete specimens survive. Yet the comparatively scanty materials we possess, com bined with what we know from other sources, enable us to draw certain general conclusions. Nature and Love - these are the two new motives which now enter into imaginative literature: or, if the motives themselves are not wholly new, the mode of poetic utterance is perceptibly altered. There is an inwardness of tone, a reflectiveness, a heightened sensibility - often indicating a vague disquiet of the mind and betraying itself in accents of longing or regret - that may be traced also in other regions of feeling. Some detailed illustrations of this mood are given in the essay. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Literature of Ancient Greece: To the Period of Isocrates Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, for which I was trans lating the History of Greek Literature from the author's manu script, commissioned me to complete the work, and a few pages of my continuation had been published, when the Society came to an end. From that time until rather less than three years ago, I heard no more of the book; but the present publishers, having become possessed of the copyright, have requested me to complete my original undertaking, and the following pages are the result. In thus accepting a task, perhaps the most laborious, in pro portion to its extent, that I could have undertaken, I have been induced by two motives: first, a wish to fulfil an obligation to the public, and to perform a promised duty to the memory of a distinguished scholar; secondly, a conviction that this book, if completed with tolerable success, would furnish an aid to the classical student which has not been and is not likely to be superseded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Greek Philosophy on English Poetry: The Chancellor's Essay Finally, we come to a point in English literature where Greek philosophy has ceased to be an influence and has be come a study. In this, as in other spheres, the nineteenth century began to win its freedom by perfect comprehension, by the self-consciousness of thought. At this point too begins what was impossible before - the reinterpretation of Greek life and philosophy in the light of the historical imagination. Such then, in outline, is our task. Dividing English poetry for convenience into four periods, we shall endeavour to trace in each both the primary influences of Greek philosophy as manifested in the thought of the age as it appears in poetry, and, also, the secondary influences, the systems based on the Greek philosophers, the references to their works, the traces of conscious aesthetic criticism. To sum up briefly in anticipation, we may say that the tangible influence of Greek philosophy on our poetry was, on the whole, small, the intangible very great.
