Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Practical Agriculture: Including His Prize Essays, Carefully Revised The dense population of those countries, in which the great est improvements, in agriculture, have been made, furnish vast quantities of manure for enriching their land; and the cheap ness of labor affords great facilities for manuring and cultiva ting their soil, in the most perfect manner The high price of Agricultural products, and a steady home demand, subject to little fluctuation, justifies the-great outlay of capital, which their system of agriculture requires. These circumstances, together with the difference of climate, constitute some of the principle reasons why the European system of agriculture cannot be successfully adopted by the farmers of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arator: Being a Series of Agricultural Essays, Practical and Political; In Sixty-One Numbers The Publisher of the following essays is the first who has offered to the public patronage, an experimental composition, adapted to the 8011, Cli mate and Agriculture of the greater portion of the United States; and so far as his knowledge extends, it is the first of the kind which this great district of country has produced. He is not qualified to judge of its merit, and can only infer from its being the. Work of a successful practical farmer, and not the oii'spring of interest or theory, that every purchaser will be reimbursed his money many fold. But how ever this may be, the Publisher respectfully states, that rude inventions have terminated in great pub lic good and that the deficiency of graphical merit in the agricultural country, for which the composi tion was intended, is almost as strong a recommen dation of this effort towards improvement, as the hierogliphicks of antiquity, were of those made for the discovery of letters. An encouragement of small improvements is the parent of perfection in every art and science, and as agriculture is the queen of the whole circle, the Publisher has thought it his duty to give the public an opportunity of awakening better talents and greater exertions, for occupying the extensive space between its present and a desi rable condition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Husbandry, Vol. 2 of 2: Being a Series of Essays on Agriculture The merit of introducing clover into use as a grass in England belongs to Walter Bligh, who published in 1652 his lmprover Improved, a work full of valuable facts, and containing many things worthy of notice at the present day. Soon after this, Wes ton gave agriculture the most decided impulse it had received for a long time, by publishing an account of the field-cultivation of the turnip in Flanders, where this root had received great attention for some years. Valuable as the culture has proved to England, near ly doubling her agricultural products within the last sixty years, turnips were obliged to encounter the most absurd prejudices, and it was a long time be fore they succeeded ih becoming an object of gener al favour. To the introduction of clover and turnips, more, perhaps, than to any other single cause, may be attributed the rapid advancement of agriculture in that kingdom. Their use renders a rotation of crops imperative, and this both science and experi ence unite in asserting to be the only true mode of making cultivation profitable, and, at the same time, constantly improve the soil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Husbandry, Vol. 1: Being a Series of Essays on Agriculture It will be seen that the first volume, with the ex ception of a few miscellaneous articles deemed ne cessary to its completeness, is from the fifth and sixth volumes of the Cultivator, and may be con sidered as the expression of the matured Opinions of judge Bum. On the subject of Agriculture. As a proper termination to this volume, we have included the Address prepared by him for delivery before the N ew-haven Agricultural and Horticultural Societies, and on the journey to perform which duty his valu able lifc was closed. A large portion of the second volume, the chapters on the Kitchen and Fruit Gar dens included, were written and prepared expressly for this work; the remaining part consisting of pa pers selected from the volumes of the Genesee Far mer. To the whole such notes have been appended, and such alterations and additions generally have been made as were deemed essential to accomplish the object we had in view. It is not expected or supposed that the theories unfolded or the practices inculcated in these volumes are perfect. The science of agriculture is necessa rily progressive, and so, of course, must be the prac tice. Our object and aim have been to imbody as much useful information as possible; to excite in quiry and investigation, and furnish the means for arriving at correct and just conclusions. How far we have succeeded in our design is left for the de cision of an enlightened agricultural public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Discussions on Agriculture, Before the Farmers Club of Little Falls These Essays, it would perhaps be proper to say, were not originally intended for publication in book form. They were written by persons engaged in the business of farming, and hence, may be deemed for the most part, the result of actual experience. This feature, it is believed, gives them greater value for. It is the kind of information most accepta ble to the farmer, and, in fact, is of that character which must always serve as the basis of all real improvement. The Article on Butter-making, by A. B. Dickinson, and that on the Virgalieu Pear, by S. H. Ainsworth, do not properly belong to the work, but these papers were read at some of the meetings of the Club, and, beg ing matter of discussion, it was thought best to introduce them. The Discussions which follow the Essays, are taken from the reports furnished by the writer, for the journal and courier Newspapers, and are intended to express the substance of remarks made at the several meetings at which the Essays were read. Whether this matter adds any thing. To the value of the work, the public, of course, must judge. It was deemed advisable to publish them in connection with the Essays, in order to give the opinion of intelligent and successful Agriculturists, only in reference to the position advanced by the Essayists, but with re gard to other topics relating to Agriculture, which chanced to come 'up before the Club. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Historical, Moral, Political, and Agricultural The following Essays are extracts from productions, written between the years 1803 and 1825; not, however, with a design to the press: but on reviewing, it was thought they might be of publick utility; and in revising, such parts have been selected, as were supposed to be most conducive to that end. When speaking of different religions I have given that of Jesus Christ the preference. When speaking of sects, no distinction has been made. This is not the business of a politician. The earlier importations were undoubtedly more extensive than any subsequent ones, the colonists rely ing upon the natural increase to supply their wants, but there is historical evidence to show that there was more or less interchange of stock between the various colonies at an early date, and that this resulted in a mixture of blood, such as we find it now in our common stock.
