Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Moral and Polite, 1660-1714 Introduction compast and surrounded with his protection the shop of warre hath not there more anvils and hammers waking, to fashion out the plates and instruments of armed justice in defence of beleaguered truth, than there be pens and heads there, sitting by their studious lamps, musing, searching, revolving new motions and ideas wherewith to present as with their homage and their fealty the approaching Reformation, others as fast reading, trying all things, assenting to the force of reason and convincement.' But with the coming of the new rules, such prose, whether wild or noble, became impossible. Instead of the splendid music of the prose of Milton, or of Jeremy Taylor, or of Sir Thomas Browne, or of Thomas Fuller, we have the calm, sedate, and ordered rhythms of writers schooled in a new tradition. We have but to turn to Dryden's Preface to 'all for Love, ' to note the difference; and to see how clearly and coldly and decorously the new writers make their statements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Moral and Polite, 1660-1714 Roughly speaking, the authors included in this volume flourished between the Restoration and the death of Queen Anne. The fifty-four years may be divided into two periods, of which the first was dominated by the Court-party, the Earl of Rochester, the Earl of Roscommon, and Sir Charles Sedley; and the second by Addison and Steele, and the greater genius of Dean Swift. The age as a whole was a critical age. During the earlier period the human intellect took stock of its past achievements, and determined for itself certain rules very proper for things stationary. There was never an age in which intellectual matters were more highly prized. Nor has there ever been an age more certain of its own surpassing merit, on grounds more slender. Soon after the Revolution, however, the criticism that had been directed on Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Milton, and in personal attack, was turned on the depravities and flippancies of polite society. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an account of masculinity in eighteenth century Britain. In particular it is concerned with the impact of an emergent polite society on notions of manliness and the gentleman. From the 1660s a new type of social behaviour, politeness, was promoted by diverse writers. Based on continental ideas of refinement, it stressed the merits of genuine and generous sociability as befitted a progressive and tolerant nation. Early eighteenth century writers encouraged men to acquire the characteristics of politeness by becoming urbane town gentlemen. Later commentators promoted an alternative culture of sensibility typified by the man of feeling. Central to both was the need to spend more time with women, now seen as key agents of refinement. The relationship demanded a reworking of what it meant to be manly. Being manly and polite was a difficult balancing act. Refined manliness presented new problems for eighteenth century men. What was the relationship between politeness and duplicity? Were feminine actions such as tears and physical delicacy acceptable or not? Critics believed polite society led to effeminacy, not manliness, and condemned this failure of male identity with reference to the fop. This book reveals the significance of social over sexual conduct for eighteenth century definitions of masculinity. It shows how features traditionally associated with nineteenth century models were well established in the earlier figure of the polite town-dweller or sentimental man of feeling. Using personal stories and diverse public statements drawn from conduct books, magazines, sermons and novels, this is a vivid account of the changing status of men and masculinity as Britain moved into the modern period.
