Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Welsh Literature The substance of these pages was delivered at the First Baptist Church, of Edwardsdale, and we feel that no apology is needed for publishing the same, though it is presented in a very imperfect form. To have the history of the Bible amongst the most constant Bible reading people in the world must be an interesting matter to all. The history of the Welsh magazines is a part of the history of in religion in Wales, and is important apart from its literary value. How the Welsh Bible and magazines were left out of such a work as the "Encyclopedia Britannica" we are at a loss to understand. We hope, however, that the next edition of that excellent work will include articles on these subjects. Until something better will appear, these two essays, we hope, will be of help to those who desire to know more than they do in this respect. Shall we also hope that they may create that desire in others who have it not? The article on the First Welsh Biblical Dictionary is given partly in order to do justice to the author of that book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance and Welsh Literature: Being a Review of Some of the Welsh Classics in the Light of the Humanistic Movement These Simple reflections upon some of the more notable of our Welsh classics are put in print for the benefit Of the intelligent laity among whom I labour, and are intended as a stimulus to further and deeper reading of the books discussed. They pretend to be no more than they really are - Simple reflections. The line of thought adopted starts from the assumption that in investigating the history of literature the best method of procedure is to extract general history from the life-story Of individuals and their books. The more marked characteristics of any period of literature are revealed in certain authors who may be taken as types Of that period. The seers of any age are few as compared with the visionless multitude, but it is to them we must go for an interpretation of the writing upon the wall. In the works of master-minds, the spirit of the age in which these minds lived is incarnate, - is clothed with literary flesh and blood. Great men may not be able to grasp the whole of any truth, or see the ultimate issue Of the part of it which they discover; but what they do see and grasp they handle with the dexterity begotten of intellectual and Spiritual superiority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Character of the Welsh as a Nation, in the Present Age The Welsh part is not a literal rendering of the English. In some places the translation is rather close; but it has been my endeavour to vary it as much as was compatible with pro priety, so that those courteous readers, who may honour both the English and the Welsh with a perusal, may find some things in the latter to interest them, which are not inserted in the former; at the same time I must say that the composition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most exciting writers in and from Wales consider the future of Wales and the UK and their place in it. What does it mean to imagine Wales and ‘The Welsh’ as something both distinct and inclusive? In Welsh (Plural), some of the foremost Welsh writers consider the future of Wales and their place in it. For many people, Wales brings to mind the same old collection of images – if it’s not rugby, sheep and leeks, it’s the 3 Cs: castles, coal, and choirs. Heritage, mining and the church are indeed integral parts of Welsh culture. But what of the other stories that point us toward a Welsh future? In this anthology of essays, authors offer imaginative, radical perspectives on the future of Wales as they take us beyond the clichés and binaries that so often shape thinking about Wales and Welshness. Includes essays from Charlotte Williams (A Tolerant Nation?), Joe Dunthorne (Submarine, The Adulterants), Niall Griffiths (Sheepshagger, Broken Ghost), Rabab Ghazoul (Gentle / Radical Turner Prize Nominee), Mike Parker (On the Red Hill), Martin Johnes (Wales Since 1939, Wales: England’s Colony?), Kandace Siobhan Walker (2019 Guardian 4th Estate Prize Winner), Gary Raymond (Golden Orphans, Wales Arts Review, BBC Wales), Darren Chetty (The Good Immigrant), Andy Welch (The Guardian), Marvin Thompson (Winner 2021 UK Poetry Prize), Durre Shahwar (Where I’m Coming From), Hanan Issa (My Body Can House Two Hearts), Dan Evans (Desolation Radio), Shaheen Sutton, Morgan Owen, Iestyn Tyne, Grug Muse and Cerys Hafana.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Welsh Literature: Containing a Brief Survey of the Works of the Chief Bards and Prose Writers From the Sixth Century to the End of the Eighteenth This little book was undertaken at the request of many who urged that there was no Handbook of Welsh Literaature, at a popular price, which could be used by those who wished to make a general acquaintance with the subject, when time and opportunities prevented their undertaking a more detailed study. It is also written with the hope that Welsh boys and girls in the Higher Forms of our Intermediate Schools, and Junior Students at the University Colleges, may have within their reach a general outline of the Literature of Wales, before they engage in the closer study required by the higher examinations of the University of Wales. The writer experienced the need of such a work in the early part of his own career, when a Welsh library was difficult of access, and books in which the treasures of our literature were locked were not procurable, even when a slender purse could supply the wherewithal. Has heard mentioned, not only in the Principality, but in England also. Some of the Editor' s English friends - themselves being eminent in literature - have said to him, Wechave often heard that there is much of value in your literature and of beauty in your poetry. Why does not some one of your literati translate them into English, and furnish us with the means of judging for ourselves? We possess translated specimens of the literature, and especially the poetry of almost every other nation and people, and should feel greater interest in reading those of the aborigines of this country, with whom we have so much in common. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welsh Poets of to-Day and Yesterday In bringing out a second series of translations from the Welsh, I must very gratefully recognise the extremely kind reception accorded to my Welsh Lyrics of the XIXth Century, - a reception which encourages me to persevere in the plan I there outlined of publishing four or five small volumes, from which, eventually, I might compile a fairly adequate Anthology of our XIXth Century Poets, with biographical and critical notices. But to do this I require assistance, and I would ask such of my readers who are interested in the matter to write to me suggesting Poets and particular Poems which they think ought to be included. I am now preparing two new volumes for the press - one of translations from living Welsh poets - and I should be really grateful for any help of the kind I have just indicated.
