Specifically, the thesis presents new findings explaining how social interactions shape individual outcomes like their effort, performance and productivity in the workplace, as well as their beliefs on miscellaneous social matters. Specifically, Chapter 1 gives new empirical results on some variables affecting the effort, quality of healthcare provided, and performance of maternal and child health (MCH) workers from a developing country (Benin). The results are obtained in a context of fixed salaries irrespective of workers' performance. In addition, Chapter 2 complements the results in Chapter 1, by explaining some of its main results on workers' productivity, in light of their bargaining power in the workplace. As for Chapter 3, it stands in the theory of opinion formation in a network. This chapter gives new results on the convergence of individual beliefs and reaching a consensus within a network when we consider a few cognitive biases in individual's behavior. More specifically, the results of this thesis are summarized as follows. Chapter 1 uses a non-cooperative game approach to bring to light the existence of strategic substitutability in the workplace of MCH workers in Benin. Particularly, the paper suggests that, to provide collectively a certain quality of healthcare in their health facility, some workers (altruists) increase their effort to compensate for the failure of their peers in offering a good quality of care. Moreover, using some relevant information in the data, the chapter also proposes a simple probability-based method to account for some variability in the strength of interactions among colleagues. Chapter 2 on the other hand, focuses on the same MCH workers, and proposes a new theory to understand better some mechanisms behind the equilibrium expressed by the strategic substitutability obtained in Chapter 1. More specifically, the chapter presents a simple Nash bargaining approach to establish how individual characteristics mold their bargaining power and consequently their workload share. The results show that workers social characteristics like their education, experience and number of children determine their bargaining power in the workplace, and thus their productivity. Finally, Chapter 3 explores how some cognitive biases affect convergence and consensus properties known up to now in an average-based model of opinion formation. In particular, when accounting for a confirmation bias and an extremist relative superiority bias, the chapter reveals that, in an a priori strongly connected and aperiodic network, beliefs do not necessarily converge to a consensus. Furthermore, some typical features of a priori networks and vectors of initial beliefs which influence the existence of a consensus are given. Overall, the chapter proposes a new understanding of some mechanisms behind social issues like political radicalism, extreme behaviors and the non-convergence of opinions within a network.

Book excerpt: Network-based connections are pervasive in hiring and mobility patterns. While the theoretical impacts of network connections on the inequality of labor market outcomes are well known (Calvo-Armengol and Jackson, 2004), the empirical magnitude of actual network effects is less certain. A key issue is the difficulty of disentangling the causal effect of network connections from differences in the characteristics of workers in better and worse networks. In the first chapter of my dissertation, I study this question using data on freelance workers in Hollywood, who, like many workers in the "freelance economy," are hired for short-term jobs through an informal process that relies in part on previous connections. In such a labor market, the fortunes of an individual worker are closely linked to the careers of key agents who make the hiring decisions for jobs. In Hollywood, workers who know position supervisors who manage more jobs will have more job opportunities. To measure the size of the network effects, I follow cohorts of freelance grips and lighting technicians who first work on a major movie production between 1988 and 2002. I develop two alternative models for the probability that workers are hired on subsequent productions--based on random effects and fixed effects specifications--that incorporate network effects, experience effects, and unobserved heterogeneity. Both models yield large estimates of the effect of experience-based connections on hiring outcomes. I then use the random effects model to develop simulation-based estimates of the fraction of overall inequality in job outcomes for workers in a given cohort that is attributable to inequality in the career success of the key supervisors they met during their initial year of work. I find that about half of the wide dispersion of career outcomes in Hollywood is generated by differences in the career trajectories of these initial key supervisors. In the second chapter, I study the asymptotic properties of the fixed effects estimator I employ in the first chapter. The estimator is robust to unobserved heterogeneity across workers and movies. It is based on subgraphs of worker-movie dyads that I call pairs. Inference is non-standard, because pairs within a sample are only independent when they do not share any workers or movies in common. The underlying criterion is a two-sample U-process. I show that the U-statistic derived from the estimator's first order condition is asymptotically equivalent to a certain projection which involves summation over all the worker-movie dyads in the sample. I use this result to derive a consistent estimator of the variance of the estimator.

Book excerpt: This dissertation studies the importance of networks and other institutional factors on workers' labor market outcomes. I particularly focus on manager-employee networks formed within the workplace, for two main reasons: these networks play a critical role in determining the productivity of individual employees, and also affect the equitability of a given working environment, which in turn influences workers' outcomes. Because social networks are more likely to form among those who share similar backgrounds (such as gender or ethnicity), vertical co-worker connections may worsen existing intra-institutional gaps between majority and minority groups, as there is a higher chance of such bonds emerging among the majority. Hence understanding the characteristics and mechanisms of manager-employee connections may yield significant implications for policymakers in empowering a diverse workforce and redressing disparities. Despite having consequential ramifications for an employee's career outcomes, little attention has been paid to manager-employee networks in the workplace, mainly due to the limited data at hand. This, in turn, limits causal evidence in the existing literature. In the first two chapters below, using web scraping techniques, I construct unique datasets that allow me to identify co-worker connections in specific professions to provide causal evidence of the effects of manager-employee connections. In Chapter 1, I inquire whether the gender of academic leaders, i.e., college deans and department chairs, affects outcomes of faculty members in terms of (i) wages and (ii) share of female faculty in an academic unit. Exploiting data allowing for a year-by-year identification of any changes in individual departments/colleges such as chair/dean transitions, I adopt an event study design which compares female and male faculty who are exposed to a gender-constant head transition (e.g., male-to-male department chair transition) and those who are exposed to a transition that also involves a change in the leader's gender (e.g., male-to-female department chair transition). I find that managers can improve or worsen female outcomes relative to male outcomes, but the effect of managers does not depend on their gender. This finding is contrary to the common expectation that promoting female managers will have positive spillover effects on other female workers: my findings suggest that merely appointing female managers is not sufficient to reduce gender disparities and improve women's representation in universities. In Chapter 2, I investigate whether and to what extent connections with "successful" senior colleagues (i.e., senior colleagues who rise to high-ranking positions during the course of their career paths) affect a junior prosecutor's chances of promotion. This study focuses on a professional organization that is marked by its bureaucratic hierarchy where managers train, supervise, and assess juniors as well as hold the influence to recommend them for promotion. To identify a causal network effect of successful seniors, I exploit exogenous variation in networks arising from personnel transfer assignments, an organization-specific attribute unique to the Korean prosecution service. I find that connections to successful seniors have a positive spillover effect on junior prosecutors: a one standard deviation increase in the number of connections with successful seniors increases the probability of being promoted for a junior by 10 percentage points. I further provide empirical evidence that there are at least three potential mechanisms behind the network effect: (i) skill spillovers from a senior to a junior, (ii) transmission of information on a junior's performance between seniors, and (iii) nepotism based on alma-mater connections. I also find that social networks arising within workplaces can reinforce the disparity between the minority and majority groups: the alumni of a major university. My findings thus propose that matching a successful senior with a junior within the same minority group of a given institution is an effective way of supporting the minority group within the workplace. In Chapter 3, we study the gender gap for academic economists across a wide range of departments and institutions. Extending the faculty salary data used in Chapter 1, we quantify how much of the gender pay gap arises within versus between departments (and institutions), and explore potential explanations for the variations in the magnitude of gender disparity across different departments and universities, focusing on institutional factors such as gender composition and the overall level of dispersion in salaries at an institution and in a department.

Book excerpt: This thesis contains three chapters around two related questions: (1) what are the determinants of the decision to work?, and (2) what are the (unintended) effects of policies stimulating labor market participation? The first two chapters tackle the second question in the empirical setting of the Mini-Job reform in Germany, which expanded substantially the in-work benefits, or tax advantages for low-earning workers. The third chapter, dealing with the first question, focuses on the transmission of employment behavior and preferences for work across generations. The first chapter analyzes how firms respond to changes in tax benefits for low-earning workers and how, through equilibrium effects, such policies also affect non-targeted, highearning workers. Combining theoretical and empirical analysis, I document the presence of both job creation and substitution underlying firm responses induced by the Mini-Job Reform. In particular, I nd that firms with a high pre-reform use of low-earning workers increase the demand for workers with better earnings, an important result. The second essay provides an empirical analysis of the effects of the same reform on earnings and employment prospects of targeted workers. The findings question the role of in-work benefits as an antipoverty policy since they do not improve earnings of targeted workers. However, they also show that these benefits provide opportunities for jobless individuals to smoothly transit to better paid employment. Finally, in the third chapter, joint with Lukas Mayr and David Koll, we analyze how employment status and attitudes towards work are related across generations. Using data for the US, we find a significant positive correlation between the employment status of mothers and children, after controlling for productivity and other observable factors. We interpret this finding as evidence of transmission of preferences for work. We show that the correlation is unlikely to be driven by networks, transmission of specific human capital or local labor markets' conditions, and we provide suggestive evidence for a role model channel.

The first essay examines the importance of job connections for internal migrants. In this chapter, I develop a theoretical model where labor market networks provide labor market information with less noise than information obtained in the formal market. This model predicts lower initial wages and greater wage growth after migration for migrants without contacts. I then use data from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth (NLSY) to examine whether migrants who used social connections when finding their first job assimilate faster in the new region. Consistent with the theoretical model, I find that migrants who did not use social connections take longer to assimilate in the new region. The second essay models how screening workers through social networks impacts labor mobility in markets with adverse selection. When there is asymmetric information in labor markets, worker mobility is constrained by adverse selection in the market for experienced workers.

Job mobility is a complex phenomenon, and network theory provides a novel and practical framework for dealing with this complexity in understanding how individuals move from job to job. My first essay measures the effect of job referral networks on search outcomes. The key contribution of this essay is providing evidence of one mechanism by which social interactions affect earnings. An on-the-job search model extended to include social transmission of job information yields an empirical specification in which ones current job offer depends on the average offer of his social contacts. Using block level variation in the quality of jobs held by ones residential neighbors, I find that when changing jobs an individual with better local network contacts will obtain a higher quality job. In addition to the main result, this paper provides new evidence on the spatial structure of the wage distribution within urban areas. In the second essay I apply network algorithms to detect groups of workers and employers with relatively homogeneous patterns of job mobility. Workers with interchangeable skills should have similar patterns of mobility across employers that use those skills in roughly the same way. Grouping workers and jobs solely on the basis of similar mobility patterns reveals labor market sectors with distinct compensation structures. My final essay, joint with John Abowd, uses network models to facilitate identification of employer-specific wage premia in a decomposition of log earnings from matched employer-employee data.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores the following two topics : (i) determinants of labor force participation at older ages in the US ; (ii) the role of social network in the earnings of recent immigrants in Canada. Specifically, Chapter 1 provides estimates of the causal effect of local house prices on the labor supply decisions of older workers in the US during the 1994-2004 housing boom period using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Local house prices are instrumented by plausible exogenous spatial and time-varying credit supply shocks. The estimates suggest that the housing boom accounted for about two thirds of older men labor force exit during the studied period. Chapter 2 responds to the question : are people in good health more likely to stay in the labor market when unemployment rises? This work provides empirical estimates of the relative impact of local unemployment shocks on the labor force participation of US older workers with heterogeneous health conditions. This study documents that most of the labor force exit of older workers during the Great recession can be attributed to poor health conditions measured before the recession. Finally, Chapter 3 analyses the effect of living in a neighborhood where the majority of the residents belongs to visible minority groups on the earnings of permanent residents who landed in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto in 2001. Overall, this research documents a negative effect of ethnic clustering on the earnings of recent immigrants in Canada and explain it by the "referral effect".
