Book excerpt: This volume brings together a group of essays on 27 English or American writers contributing to the history of English and American literature, and offers a concise survey of the question of literary understanding. It approaches this question in a specific and systematic way, adopting the framework of structuralist literary criticism. The book proposes a preliminary to the understanding of literature in general, a sort of “philosophy of literature”, as the problems involved in critical reading of course reflect the powerful characteristics of literary language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a product of the XI International Conference on English Language and Literary Studies held in Montenegro in 2014. The “old spaces” were taken as a metaphorical tool for reintroducing a wide range of established topics with new approaches. Space was, thus, understood as physical, mechanical, continuous, linear, as measurable and symbolic, as subjective and relational, and as aesthetic. It was found on maps, in architecture, on theatre stages, in books, in hearts, in one’s identity, in time, and in theses and theories from the Aristotelian topos to Einstein’s construct of space-time. Therefore, the means of travel to these spaces and the forms the journeys take are also multifarious. However, so are the discursive strategies and their limitations when it comes to presenting the journeys and their destinations. The contributors to this volume represent a range of nationalities, and present research that either follows in the footsteps of other authors, in a literal or secondary literary journey to real geographical places, or observes the universal literary and old theoretical issues through new critical lenses. Indeed, they are often on both roads, witnessing how inextricable human efforts are to finding, identifying, and aestheticising oneself in relation to a particular space. Their contributions to this book expose how “spaces” were created and recreated through writing and symbolical representations in general. They also show how the images of these spaces have been changing in consent to the intentions of their visitors, and reveal that persistent and obstinate moment in a space that despite, or in spite of, changing perspectives, itself refuses to be changed. The book will encourage for further contributions to this expanding field in the humanities. In their numerous and distinct ways, the contributions to this particular book maintain that understanding how spaces are conceived and conceptualised is of pronounced importance in the globalized world in which cultures are gradually losing authenticities, while their spaces – geographical, tourist, spiritual, literary, aesthetic – are as reflective of the “visitors” as they are of the “hosts.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Culture, Genre, and Literary Vocation, Michael Davitt Bell charts the important and often overlooked connection between literary culture and authors' careers. Bell's influential essays on nineteenth-century American writers—originally written for such landmark projects as The Columbia Literary History of the United States and The Cambridge History of American Literature—are gathered here with a major new essay on Richard Wright. Throughout, Bell revisits issues of genre with an eye toward the unexpected details of authors' lives, and invites us to reconsider the hidden functions that terms such as "romanticism" and "realism" served for authors and their critics. Whether tracing the demands of the market or the expectations of readers, Bell examines the intimate relationship between literary production and culture; each essay closely links the milieu in which American writers worked with the trajectory of their storied careers.

Book excerpt: Celebrating the 80th birthday of Winfried Fluck, this volume of REAL gathers leading US-American and European literary scholars from English and American Studies to engage some of his classic essays, covering topics that range from the aesthetics of early American literature to the history of our digital present and from the Americanization of literary studies to the search for American democratic culture. Each of the volume's twelve dialogues consists of a republished essay by Fluck and a response by one his interlocutors, written specifically for this occasion. Contributors include field-defining scholars, long-time companions, and colleagues whose intellectual trajectory has been impacted by Fluck's incisive metacriticism and his reception-oriented approach to literary and cultural history. The twelve dialogues reassess debates that have shaped literary studies in the late twentieth century and they inquire into the paradigmatic shifts that are currently reorganizing the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade Nina Baym has pioneered in the reexamination of American literature. She has led the way in questioning assumptions about American literary history, in critiquing the standard canon of works we read and teach, and in rediscovering lost texts by American women writers. Feminism and American Literary History collects fourteen of her most important essays published since 1980, which, combining feminist perspectives with original archival research, significantly revise standard American literary history. In Part I, "Rewriting Old American Literary History," the focus is on male writers. Essays range from close readings of individual works to ambitious critiques of the main paradigms by which scholars have conventionally linked disparate texts and authors in a narrative of nationalist literary history: the self-in-the-wilderness myth, the romance-novel distinction, the myth of New England origins. Part II, "Writing New American Literary History," studies examples of women's writing from the Revolution through the Civil War. Stressing much overtly public and political writing that has been overlooked even by feminist scholars, noting public and political themes in supposedly domestic works, the essays substantially modify and historicize the paradigm by which premodern American women's writing is currently understood. The contentious and influential essays in Part III, "Two Feminist Polemics," address feminist literary theory and pedagogy, advocating a pluralist practice as the basis for scholarship, criticism, and humane feminism. No one interested in American literature or in women's writing can afford to ignore Baym's revisionist work. Humorous and gracefully written, this book is enjoyable and indispensable.

Meserole, a timely collection that reflects changing conceptions of the field, contains studies by leading scholars and celebrates the achievements of Harrison T. Meserole--colonialist, bibliographer, and Shakespeare scholar extraordinaire. These dynamic essays deal with areas at the forefront of current research, such as popular culture, minority and non-Anglo writings, recanonization, genre studies, and Anglo-American links. All the contributors were Meserole's students sometime during the twenty-eight years he taught at The Pennsylvania State University, and all have established their own scholarly reputations since then." "Timothy K. Conley examines the institutionalization of American literature. Donald P. Wharton considers the influence of the English Renaissance on Colonial sea literature. Paul J. Lindholdt provides an overview of a vast popular genre, the colonial promotion tract." "Raymond F. Dolle uncovers the satire against Sir Walter Raleigh, the romantic treasure-seeker, by his more hard-nosed contemporary, John Smith. Reiner Smolinski's revisionist essay argues that New England's leading divines did not--as many still believe--justify their Errand eschatologically. Ada Van Gastel discusses the main text of the early Dutch colonists, by Adriaen van der Donck." "Kathryn Zabelle Derounian-Stodola analyzes Sarah Kemble Knight's travel journal as an unusual example of a Puritan picaresque. Jeffrey Walker probes eighteenth-century undergraduate commonplace books revealing the seamy side of Harvard undergraduate life. Stephen R. Yarbrough examines Jonathan Edwards's conceptions of time in the last work he saw to press before he died." "Robert D. Arner introduces and annotates two unpublished poems by the Samuel Pepys of eighteenth-century Virginia, Robert Bolling. Robert D. Habich explores Franklin's rhetorical method as rooted in contemporary empirical science. Cheryl Z. Oreovicz shows how Mercy Warren's tragedies contained stern messages for the post-Revolutionary "Lost generation."" "Jayne K. Kribbs looks at the popular novelist John Davis as a candidate for recanonization, and Paul Sorrentino shows that Mason Lock Weems's so-called children's classic, The Life of Washington, is a complex, artistic work for adults."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. His writings in the field of the romance languages and of comparative philology have been always stimulating, often controversial. This collection presents his essays in English and American literature which appeared in various journals and other publications during his lifetime. They range from an explication de texte of three great Middle English poems, through close scrutiny of writings of Donne, Milton, Keats, to a consideration of Edgar Allan Poe and Whitman, and, finally, to one of Yeats’ poems. Each of the essays in this collection is illuminated and heightened by Professor Spitzer’s careful and imaginative exegesis. The delightful "American Advertising Explained as Popular Art" is included as a sample of Professor Spitzer’s commentary on American culture. Originally published in 1962. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book excerpt: The American Scene considers major texts of nineteenth century American literature: The Leatherstocking Tales, Poe's fiction, The Scarlet Letter, Moby-Dick, Leaves of Grass, Dickinson's poetry, Huckleberry Finn, James's The American Scene. It sees these works as attempts to articulate relationships between the self and the New World. The indeterminacy of the relationships is expressed in the formal instability of the works themselves. In these respects, nineteenth century American literature is shown to offer a striking contrast to comparable English literature.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by British authors offers refreshing perspectives on the vitality of contemporary American fiction. Unlike many such gatherings, the writers chosen here represent the continuing American obsession--both aesthetic and cultural--with the "new," and in each case newness becomes a revealing and highly individual concern. As Clarke points out in his introduction, while the fiction of the 1960s represented either a flight from or unwilling capitulation to history, the novelists treated here (E.L. Doctorow, Toni Morrison, Raymond Carver, and Gordon Lish) are "concerned with history." The volume covers the divergent ethnic responses of Rudolfo Anaya, Louise Erdrich, and Maxine Hong Kingston.
