Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is this just another book on infant baptism? No. It is possibly the best succinct, yet comprehensive work on the subject ever written by a puritan. It was originally a longer series of sermons that Harrison preached to his congregation, many of whom were Baptist at the time. At their request, he placed his thoughts into a concise treatise that covers all the main points needful in understanding the biblical position of infant inclusion in the Covenant of Grace, and infant baptism. Harrison’s work is so acute in its biblical presentation of the truth of Scripture that the reader cannot be but left in awe of his masterful exactitude to God’s mind on the issue of infant inclusion in the Covenant of Grace, and the application of the sign of the covenant to every visible member in the church. He gives the reader an introductory lesson on the Covenant of Grace and those parties involved by way of its membership, and then proceeds to teach the reader why infants are to be baptized. Harrison deals hermeneutically with 9 biblical arguments on the issue; two of which are his most important foundational chapters setting the stage for the rest of the book. He also shows the danger of shutting infants out of the kingdom of heaven, and answers all the main objections to Antipaedobaptist theology on the issue. He ends the work with a chapter on the right mode in which baptism should take place, along with a chapter on applying the truths of the study to the life of the members of the covenant community. Without sounding clichéd, this work is among the top works ever written on the subject, and in my estimation is irrefutable. The unbiased reader will have no issues with Harrison’s biblical exposition and logic driven inference. It is a powerhouse puritan work that every Paedobaptist ought to read for support, and every Antipaedobaptist ought to read to untangle their dispensational theology. Harrison says that Antipaedobaptism is “to be justly abhorred as false doctrine,” and proves this to the reader beyond a reasonable doubt. Book excerpt: Matthew Sylvester (1636–1708) was a nonconformist divine, a meek and spirited Reformed preacher, and scholarly linguist. This rare work by Matthew Sylvester is an exegetical triumph of proper hermeneutics. He begins his treatment of baptism and its implications for parents and infants by first setting down a key principle of hermeneutics. He follows closely Christ's perfect method of interpreting the Scriptures against the Sadducees and their denial of the resurrection. Christ uses the Old Testament Scriptures to refute the Sadducees’ denial of a “plain” text that taught the resurrection (as many do in the New Testament about infant baptism). Christ accuses them of both erring in their understanding of the Scriptures, and the implications of denying the power of God. Next, Sylvester treats methodically the Hebraisms that are used throughout the New Testament. He responsibly exegetes “house,” “household” and other Hebraic terms that have been outlined in the New Testament referring to those having been baptized, and what those terms literally mean, as well as all their implications. He explains such Scriptures as the account with Lydia, "And when she was baptized, and her household, " (Acts 16:15), as well as the accounts of the Jailor and Crispus, among others. As a consequence of that part of the study, Sylvester then teaches the further implications of both an infant’s and parent’s right in the church in the sacrament of baptism. He explains two different practices; withholding baptism from infants of baptized parents, and withholding such parents from their infants in baptism. Sylvester maintains that the arguments brought against these practices, are those refuted by Christ against a practice of the same nature, namely, that it is a “putting asunder” those whom God has joined together; and that “from the beginning it was not so.” His exegetical treatment of this line of reasoning is penetrating and helpful to the inquirer of these important covenant concepts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Validity of Baptism by Sprinkling, and the Right of Infants to That Ordinance: Supported and Defended in Two Discources Delivered at Malden, in the Beginning of the Year 1804 While Peter was preaching the gospel salvation to Cornelius and his assembled friends, the Holy Ghost fell upon the hearers in a manner so visible and striking, as nearly to resemble what had before happened to the apostles themselves on the day of Pentecost. Observing this, Peter immediately proposes, in the words now read, the admission of these new converts to a regular Handing in the christian church, by the ordinance instituted for that purpose. As they had already been baptized by the Holy Ghost, the water baptism, which they Were now to receive, was intended as an outward seal or token of what they had inwardly experienced. The one was the immediate gift of God, producing a real change in the heart, purging it from fin and dead works, and bringing it to be answer of a good conscience toward God; the other was to be the work of man, and, of itself, could avail to nothing more than the purifying, of the flesh. As a divine institution, however, rendered significant by the command of God, its observance becomes indispensably incumbent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principal Arguments From Scripture in Favour of Infant Baptism Considered It seemed, therefore, as if the Old Testament gave its verdict, that the unbelieving wife was to be separated from the believing husband, as being unclean. How then does the apostle answer this He says in effect, to those who held the Opinion, ' You cannot stop here. If your principle is good for any thing, it ap plies to unbelieving children likewise, since they are unclean for the same reason. Hence, not only will the connection between man and wife be broken up by your principle, but also the relationship between parents and children. Ifa wife is to be severed from a believing husband, because she is unclean; children must be severed from their believing parents, because they also are unclean.' Observe, the apostle does not say, their children would be unclean, as referring to the particular instance of which he was treating, but, your children are unclean, showing that the principle took in the range of the whole church. For by you and your he everywhere means the whole church which he is addressing. So in this epistle, 1 Cor. Vi, 1, 15, 19, 20 viii, 9; ix,11,12; xi, 18, &c. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Bible support the concept of "once saved, always saved," or can a person lose his or her salvation? Among the most hotly debated topics in the history of Christian theology has been the perseverance of the saints. How do the Scriptures portray the complex interplay between grace and free will? These and related questions are explored from different angles in this thought-provoking Counterpoints volume. The contributors each state their case for one of four prominent views on eternal security: Classical Calvinist – presented by Michael S. Horton Moderate Calvinist – presented by Norman L. Geisler Reformed Arminian – presented by Stephen M. Ashby Wesleyan Arminian – presented by J. Steven Harper In keeping with the forum approach of the Counterpoints series, each view is first presented by its proponent, then critiqued and defended. This fair and respectful approach allows you to weigh for yourself the strengths and weaknesses of the different doctrinal stances. By furnishing you with scholarly and thoughtful perspectives on the topic of eternal security, this book helps you sift through opposing views to arrive at your own informed conclusions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism In The New Testament In this thorough and well-documented study of the sacrament of Holy Baptism, G.R. Beasley-Murray presents a critical defense of the doctrine of believers' baptism on the basis of the New Testament evidences. The author--one of the leading New Testament scholars in England--is himself a Baptist; but his discussion transcends denominatioal lines. Beasley-Murray begins by discussing various rites that precede Christian baptism historically, and analyzes the relationship between these earlier rites and baptism. From these antecedents--Old Testament ritual washings, Jewish proselyte baptism, the lustrations practiced at Qumran, and the baptism of John the Baptist--the author proceeds to the foundations of Christian baptism in the career of Jesus, its emergence as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and its development in the New Testament epistolary literature. In his consideration of the doctrine of Christian baptism as ariculated in the New Testament, Beasley-Murray focuses his attention on the necessity of baptism and its relationship to grace, faith, the Spirit, the church, ethics, and hope. A careful examination of the rise and significance of infant baptism follows, and the study concludes with a selected bibliography and several indices.
