Book Synopsis International Conference on Residual Stresses by : G. Beck
Download or read book International Conference on Residual Stresses written by G. Beck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1043 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are always introduced in materials when they are produced, or when they undergo non-uniform plastic deformation during use. The circumstances that can cause residual stresses are therefore numerous. Residual stresses exist in all materials and, depending on their distribution, can playa beneficial role (for example, compressive surface stress) or have a catastrophic effect, especially on fatigue behaviour and corrosion properties. The subject of residual stresses took form around 1970 with the development of methods to measure macroscopic deformations during the machining of materials or on an atomic scale by X-ray diffraction. These techniques have made considerable progress in the last 20 years. The meetings organized in several countries (Germany, France, Japan, etc. ) have largely contributed to this progress, aided by the numerous exchanges of information and knowledge to which they have given rise. Studies of the formation of residual stresses began more slowly, but have progressed with the emergence of increasingly realistic models of materials behaviour and with access to ever more powerful codes for numerical calculations. Two successive meetings for discussing this topic have been held in Europe. The first, held in 1982 in Nancy (France), consisted of 30 participants from 5 countries. The second was held in Linkoping (Sweden) in 1984, with 80 participants of 16 nationalities. It was decided to hold a first International Conference, ICRS, to address all aspects of the problem. Held in 1986 in Garmisch-Partenkirschen (FRG), it was an assembly of neady 300 participants from 21 countries.

Book Synopsis X-ray Characterization of Materials by : Eric Lifshin
Download or read book X-ray Characterization of Materials written by Eric Lifshin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linking of materials properties with microstructures is a fundamental theme in materials science, for which a detailed knowledge of the modern characterization techniques is essential. Since modern materials such as high-temperature alloys, engineering thermoplastics and multilayer semiconductor films have many elemental constituents distributed in more than one phase, characterization is essential to the systematic development of such new materials and understanding how they behave in practical applications. X-ray techniques play a major role in providing information on the elemental composition and crystal and grain structures of all types of materials. The challenge to the materials characterization expert is to understand how specific instruments and analytical techniques can provide detailed information about what makes each material unique. The challenge to the materials scientist, chemist, or engineer is to know what information is needed to fully characterize each material and how to use this information to explain its behavior, develop new and improved properties, reduce costs, or ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. This comprehensive handbook presents all the necessary background to understand the applications of X-ray analysis to materials characterization with particular attention to the modern approach to these methods.
Book Synopsis Nondestructive Methods for Material Property Determination by : C.O. Ruud
Download or read book Nondestructive Methods for Material Property Determination written by C.O. Ruud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in materials property determination by nondestructive means is increasing especially for in-process and in-service inspection of structural and electronic materials and components. Such attention is due to several factors, including increased automation of manufacturing processes, the demand for greater reliability in consumer products and military hardware, and more severe demands on the performance of materials. This book represents the proceedings for the Symposium on Nondestructive Hethods for Haterial Property Determination held April 6 to 8, 1983, at the Hotel Hershey in Hershey, Pennsylvania. That symposium was one of the first meetings concerned specifically with nondestructive material property determination (characteriza tion). Its purpose was to stimulate intercourse between researchers, engineers, and theoreticians so as to focus upon the multidiseiplinary problems of advancing the state of the art in this area. The papers in the book are concerned mainly with acoustic (including ultrasonic), magnetic, electrical, and x-ray diffraction techniques and applications. Hany of the papers describe well developed technologies that are currently in practical application, while others discuss concepts which will never emerge from the laboratory but perhaps will provide the groundwork for more practical ideas.

Book Synopsis Non-destructive Materials Characterization and Evaluation by : Walter Arnold
Download or read book Non-destructive Materials Characterization and Evaluation written by Walter Arnold and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to non-destructive materials characterization (NDMC) using different non-destructive evaluation techniques. It presents theoretical basis, physical understanding, and technological developments in the field of NDMC with suitable examples for engineering and materials science applications. It is written for engineers and researchers in R&D, design, production, quality assurance, and non-destructive testing and evaluation. The relevance of NDMC is to achieve higher reliability, safety, and productivity for monitoring production processes and also for in-service inspections for detection of degradations, which are often precursors of macro-defects and failure of components. Ultrasonic, magnetic, electromagnetic and X-rays based NDMC techniques are discussed in detail with brief discussions on electron and positron based techniques.
Book Synopsis Mechanics of Nondestructive Testing by : Stinchcomb
Download or read book Mechanics of Nondestructive Testing written by Stinchcomb and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synergism of the mechanics of nondestructive testing and the mechanics of materials response has great potential value in an era of rapid development of new materials and new applications for con ventional materials. The two areas are closely related and an advance in one area often leads to an advance in the other. As our understanding of basic principles increases, nondestructive testing is outgrowing the image of "black box techniques" and is rapidly becoming a legitimate technical area of science and engineering. At the present time, however, an understanding of the mechanics of nondestructive testing is lagging behind other advances in the field. The key to further development in the mechanics of nondestructive testing lies in the mechanics of the phenomena or response being investigated - a better understanding of materials response suggests better nondestructive test methods to investigate the response which, in turn, advances our understanding of materials response, and so on. With this approach in mind, the Materials Response Group of the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University hosted a Conference on the Mechanics of Nondestructive Testing on September 10 through 12, 1980. Sponsors of the conference were the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, and the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department.
