Book Synopsis Problems and Perspectives by : Wendy Ayres-Bennett
Download or read book Problems and Perspectives written by Wendy Ayres-Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems and Perspectives- Studies in the Modern French Language looks at a number of interesting or problematic areas in the phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis of the French language and encourages the reader to think critically about different ways of approaching, describing and explaining these issues or data. The book is divided into two parts- the first section is a preliminary to, and contextualises, the discussion of the more specialised topics of the second part. Part two presents problematic and controversial areas in the description and analysis of the contemporary language. Where appropriate historical and sociolinguistic issues are also integrated into the discussion of modern French. Aimed primarily at advanced students and researchers in French linguistics, the introductory sections of part one also make this book accessible to undergraduates beginning their study of French linguistics, and to less specialised readers.

Book Synopsis Semitic Languages by : Edward Lipiński
Download or read book Semitic Languages written by Edward Lipiński and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comparative grammar of the Semitic languages, by H. Zimmern, was published a hundred years ago and the last original work of this kind was issued in Russian in 1972 by B.M. Grande. The present grammar, designed to come out in the centenary of the completion of Zimmern's work, fills thus a gap. Besides, it is based on both classical and modern Semitic languages, it takes new material of these last decades into account, and situates the Semitic languages in the wider context of Afro-Asiatic. The introduction briefly presents the languages in question. The main parts of the work are devoted to phonology, morphology, and syntax, with elaborate charts and diagrams. Then follows a discussion of fundamental questions related to lexicographical analysis. The study is supplemented by a glossary of linguistic terms used in Semitics, by a selective bibliography, by a general index, and by an index of words and forms. The book is the result of twenty-five years of research and teaching in comparative Semitic grammar.

Despite the apparent heterogeneity in the field, a deeper unity in the varous topics emerges demonstrating that French linguistics today is more and more characterized as a consistent framework for common research. This book gives credence to the claim that French linguistics stands at a crossroads where subdomains meet and feed one another.
Book Synopsis Latin Linguistics and Linguistic Theory by : Harm Pinkster
Download or read book Latin Linguistics and Linguistic Theory written by Harm Pinkster and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles of this collection on Latin linguistics are representative of the kind of research that is currently carried out in the field of linguistics. Most deal with syntax or sentence structure, but they vary with respect to their emphasis on theory or description. They also vary with respect to the grammatical framework with which they are formulated, with some preponderance of transformational generative approaches. All papers are well-informed about the major developments in contemporary linguistics and make extensive use of recent methods and types of argumentation. In the introduction the volume editor briefly reviews the present state of Latin linguistics, starting with a section on the question whether it is possible to conduct up-to-date linguistic research for Latin at all. To be followed by a brief sketch of the impact of recent linguistic theories on Latin linguistics in general, and in a final third section an outline is presented of the possible interest the contributions to this volume may have for linguists working on languages other than Latin
