Book Synopsis Eurocommunism by : Ioannis Balampanidis
Download or read book Eurocommunism written by Ioannis Balampanidis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eurocommunism constitutes a "moment" of great transformation connecting the past and the present of the European Left, a political project by means of which left-wing politics in Europe effected a definitive transition to a thoroughly different paradigm. It rose in the wake of 1968 – that pivotal year of social revolt and rethinking that caused a divide between radical, progressive and socialist thinking in western and southern Europe and the Soviet model. Communist parties in Italy, France, Spain and Greece changed tack, drew on the dynamics of social radicalism of the time and came to be associated with political moderation, liberal democracy and negotiation rather than contentious politics forging a movement that would hold influence until the early 1980s. Eurocommunism thus wove an original political synthesis delineated against both the revolutionary Left and the social democracy: "party of struggle and party of governance".

Download or read book Blessed Motherhood, Bitter Fruit written by Elinor Accampo and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-09-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nelly Roussel (1878–1922)—the first feminist spokeswoman for birth control in Europe—challenged both the men of early twentieth-century France, who sought to preserve the status quo, and the women who aimed to change it. She delivered her messages through public lectures, journalism, and theater, dazzling audiences with her beauty, intelligence, and disarming wit. She did so within the context of a national depopulation crisis caused by the confluence of low birth rates, the rise of international tensions, and the tragedy of the First World War. While her support spread across social classes, strong political resistance to her message revealed deeply conservative precepts about gender which were grounded in French identity itself. In this thoughtful and provocative study, Elinor Accampo follows Roussel's life from her youth, marriage, speaking career, motherhood, and political activism to her decline and death from tuberculosis in the years following World War I. She tells the story of a woman whose life and work spanned a historical moment when womanhood was being redefined by the acceptance of a woman's sexuality as distinct from her biological, reproductive role—a development that is still causing controversy today.

Book Synopsis Is Socialism Doomed? by : Daniel Singer
Download or read book Is Socialism Doomed? written by Daniel Singer and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When François Mitterrand was elected President in 1981, bringing the Socialist Party to power for the first time in decades, two hundred thousand voters danced around the Bastille. But their euphoria was short lived, and by 1986 the conservatives had regained control of the Parliament. What led to the collapse of socialism in France? Was the approach taken by Mitterrand at fault, or was Socialism doome from the start. As Daniel Singer, Foreign Correspondent of The Nation, points out in his well-informed, perceptive, and often witty analysis, the Mitterrand government was compromised even before the election and, by 1986, it was socialist in name only. But the French experience does not prove that socialism is doomed, Singer contends, only that it must be reinvented, taking an international approach and providing a coherent, long-range plan that will generate wide-spread popular support, without which it cannot survive.

Book Synopsis Neither Right Nor Left by : Zeev Sternhell
Download or read book Neither Right Nor Left written by Zeev Sternhell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few books on European history in recent memory have caused such controversy and commotion," wrote Robert Wohl in 1991 in a major review of Neither Right nor Left. Listed by Le Monde as one of the forty most important books published in France during the 1980s, this explosive work asserts that fascism was an important part of the mainstream of European history, not just a temporary development in Germany and Italy but a significant aspect of French culture as well. Neither right nor left, fascism united antibourgeois, antiliberal nationalism, and revolutionary syndicalist thought, each of which joined in reflecting the political culture inherited from eighteenth-century France. From the first, Sternhell's argument generated strong feelings among people who wished to forget the Vichy years, and his themes drew enormous public attention in 1994, as Paul Touvier was condemned for crimes against humanity and a new biography probed President Mitterand's Vichy connections. The author's new preface speaks to the debates of 1994 and reinforces the necessity of acknowledging the past, as President Chirac has recently done on France's behalf.

This book was released on with total page 19633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
