Book excerpt: Structural Vibration Analysis and Damping Many structures suffer from unwanted vibrations and, although careful analysis at the design stage can minimize these, the vibration levels of many structures are excessive. In this book the entire range of methods of controlling this structural vibration — both by damping and by excitation control — are described in a single volume. Clear and concise descriptions are given of the techniques for mathematically modelling real structures so that the equations which describe the motion of such structures can be derived. This approach leads naturally to a comprehensive discussion of the analysis of typical models of vibrating structures excited by a range of periodic and random inputs. Careful consideration is also given to the sources of excitation, both internal and external, and the effects of isolation and transmissibility. A major part of the book is devoted to damping of structures and many sources of damping are considered, as are the ways of changing damping using both active and passive methods. The numerous worked examples liberally distributed throughout the text amplify and clarify the theoretical analysis presented and particular attention is paid to the meaning and interpretation of results, further enhancing the scope and applications of analysis. In addition 80 problems are included, with answers and worked solutions given for most of them. It will provide engineering students, designers and professional engineers with a detailed insight into the principles involved in the analysis and damping of structural vibration while presenting a sound theoretical basis for further study.
Book Synopsis Vibration of Axially-Loaded Structures by : Lawrence N. Virgin
Download or read book Vibration of Axially-Loaded Structures written by Lawrence N. Virgin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the vibration and the stability of slender structural components. The loss of stability of structures is an important aspect of structural mechanics and is presented here in terms of dynamic behavior. A variety of structural components are analyzed with a view to predict their response to various (primarily axial) loading conditions. A number of different techniques are presented, with experimental verification from the laboratory. The book presents methods by which the combined effects of vibration and buckling on various structures can be assessed.

Book excerpt: "Structural Vibration: Exact Solutions for Strings, Membranes, Beams, and Plates offers an introduction to structural vibration and highlights the importance of the natural frequencies in design. It focuses on free vibrations for analysis and design of structures and machine and presents the exact vibration solutions for strings, membranes, beams, and plates. This book emphasizes the exact solutions for free transverse vibration of strings, membranes, beams, and plates. It explains the intrinsic, fundamental, and unexpected features of the solutions in terms of known functions as well as solutions determined from exact characteristic equations. The book provides:A single-volume resource for exact solutions of vibration problems in strings, membranes, beams, and plates A reference for checking vibration frequency values and mode shapes of structural problemsGoverning equations and boundary conditions for vibration of structural elements Analogies of vibration problems Structural Vibration: Exact Solutions for Strings, Membranes, Beams, and Plates provides practicing engineers, academics, and researchers with a reference for data on a specific structural member as well as a benchmark standard for numerical or approximate analytical methods"--
Book Synopsis Composite Structures by : I.H. Marshall
Download or read book Composite Structures written by I.H. Marshall and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-09-30 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Sixth International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/6) held at Paisley College, Scotland in September 1991. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College. It was co-sponsored by Scottish Enterprise, the National Engineering Laboratory, the US Army Research, Development and Standardisation Group-UK, Strathclyde Regional Council and Renfrew District Council. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful ICCS/1/2/3/4 and 5 held at Paisley in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989 respectively. As we enter the final decade of this century many organisations throughout the world are adopting a prophetic role by attempting to forecast future scientific advances and their associated impact on mankind. Although some would argue that to do so is folly, without such futuristic visionaries the world would be that much poorer. IntelJigent speculation based on research trends and historical advances, rather than fanciful theories, breathes a healthy air of enthusiasm into the scientific community. Surely this is the very oxygen necessary to ignite the fir~s of innovation and invention amongst pioneers of research.

Book Synopsis Integrated Design and Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering '98 by : Jean-Louis Batoz
Download or read book Integrated Design and Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering '98 written by Jean-Louis Batoz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-11-30 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the optimization of product design and manufacturing. It contains selected and carefully composed articles based on presentations given at the IDMME conference, held in Compiègne University of Technology, France, in 1998. The authors are all involved in cutting-edge research in their respective fields of specialization. The integration of manufacturing constraints and their optimization in the design process is becoming more and more widespread in the development of mechanical products or systems. There is a clear industrial need for these kinds of methodologies. Important - but still unsolved - problems are related to the definition of design processes, the choice of optimal manufacturing processes, and their integration through coherent methodologies in adapted environments. The main topics addressed in this book are: analysis and optimization of mechanical parts and products (computational structural mechanics, optimum design of structures, finite element solvers, computer-aided geometry, modeling and synthesis of mechanisms); analysis and optimization for fabrication and manufacturing systems (modeling of forming processes, modeling for control and measurement, tolerancing and assembly in manufacturing, off-line programming and optimal parameters for machining, robotics, welding); methodological aspects of integrated design and manufacturing (new methodologies for design with constraints, communication tools, training applications, computer-aided manufacturing). Apart from giving a thorough theoretical background, a very important theme is the relation between research and industrial applications. The book is of interest for engineers, researchers and PhD students who are involved in the optimization of design and manufacturing processes.
