Esta estrategia escritural dio paso, en el siglo XX, a reapropiaciones y a la inscripción del cuerpo como plataforma de procesos de subjetivación y de un discurso de la sexualidad desde una perspectiva femenina que además cuestionó los paradigmas androcéntricos de la heterosexualidad, la identidad y el saber. Entre los hitos literarios analizados, se destacan: las injustas diferencias de género (Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Juana Manuela Gorriti, Rosario Castellanos), la legitimación del cuerpo como signo identitario (Teresa de la Parra, María Luisa Bombal, Armonía Somers, Rosario Ferré), la autonomía social y cultural (Mercedes Valdivieso) y la inscripción de un discurso lesbiano (Reina Roffé, Irene González Frei). Resulta, entonces, un libro clave para la comprensión de la trayectoria narrativa de la mujer latinoamericana desde una perspectiva teórica que permite conocer la dinámica histórica de las relaciones de género.
