Book excerpt: His father was in the Mafia and forced his son Mario to be involved in it against his wishes. Mario wanted to be an entertainer in show business. His father forced him to watch him dismember bodies of guys he killed when he was 9 years old and also made him watch him torture and shoot a man tied to a chair blowing the top of his head off. On his 18th birthday his father gave him a loaded gun wanting him to kill a guy so that he would become a made man in the Genovese Mafia Crime Family which he refused to do and ran away from home. His father forced him to come back and made him run his crime business and rackets. Mario had to do that but still his first love and passion was show business and entertaining families. He never killed anyone and never dealt in drugs and never dealt in porno but ran most of all the other Mob businesses for his father while still doing his shows as an escape artist, magician, Rock & Roll singer and guitar player. He led a double life. One as Mario Manzini entertainer. The other as Dennis Migliore associate of the Mafia for his father all the time looking for a way out to escape the hold that his father had on him and just stay in show business. His mother and father sexually molested him since he was 4 years old. His mother would beat him and torture him when he tried to get away from her. She'd burn his hands over the stove and with lite cigarettes and beat him with his fathers belt and with whips. His father and mother would tie him to a chair and urinate on him when he was small. His father would pick him up while he was sleeping at age 5 and put him into bed with his own mother who was waiting to molest him as his father watched it all. When he was 9 years old his father took him to the basement of his uncles butcher shop at night in the Bronx, NYC to watch all of the gang members dismember a corpse of a guy that they all killed. His father forced him to watch it and then when he tried to get away, his father called him vile names and sissy. There are so many unbelievable incidents in this biography that most people will be shocked after reading it. His father was a hit man in the Genovese Mafia Crime Family having killed over 16 people over his long career as a gangster. "A Real Page Turner" "You Won't be Able To Put It Down" "Soon To Be A Major Motion Picture"! This is his True Story!

Book excerpt: Despite strenuous efforts from local, national, and international law enforcement, organized crime continues to thrive and prosper—even centuries-old crime outfits are surviving the global forces of mass migration and multinational business and finance. From traditional gangland enterprises such as narcotics, gambling, and prostitution, the world’s mafias have moved into new sources of illegal income, including high-tech arms smuggling, money laundering, and identity fraud. Traditional Crime in the Modern World tracks these organizations—the Italian and Mexican mafias, Columbian drug cartels, Chinese triads, and others—across five continents as they adapt to change, and assesses their prospects in the short and long term. World events such as the collapse of the Soviet Union and the 9/11 terror attacks are discussed in the context of contributing to emerging markets for illicit goods and services, and to evolving partnerships among criminal entities. This timely volume: • Provides a comprehensive overview of how mafia-like structures function today. • Analyzes in depth national crime situations with global implications. • Examines the migration of organized crime groups and their operations in their new countries. • Gauges the influence of digital and other technologies on organized crime. • Where applicable, notes the links between organized crime and national political institutions. • Describes the impact of the global financial crisis on crime organizations. Concise, compelling, and deeply documented, Traditional Crime in the Modern World is an eye-opening resource for researchers in Criminology and Criminal Justice, particularly with an interest in organized crime and trafficking, as well as related topics of Demography, Political Science, and International Relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of social control has constituted the acid test for the entire issue of immigration and integration. But whilst recent studies show that the crime rate for non-nationals is three, four or more, times higher than that of the country’s 'own' citizens, academic interest in these statistics has been inhibited by the political difficulties they raise. Immigration, Social Integration and Crime addresses this issue directly. Providing a thorough analysis of immigration and crime rates in all of the main European countries, as well as examining the situation in the US, Luigi M. Solivetti concludes that the widespread notion that a large non-national population produces high crime rates must be rejected. Noting the undeniably substantial, but significantly variable, contribution of non-nationals to crime statistics in Western Europe, he nevertheless goes on to analyze and explain the factors that influence the relationship between immigration and crime. It is the characteristics of the 'host' countries that are shown to be significantly associated with non-nationals’ integration and, ultimately, their involvement in crime. In particular, Solivetti concludes, it is 'social capital' in the host societies – comprized of features such as education, transparency, and openness – that plays a key role in non-nationals’ integration chances, and so in their likelihood to commit crime. Supported by extensive empirical data and statistical analysis, Immigration, Social Integration and Crime provides an invaluable contribution to one of the most pressing social and political debates – in Europe, and elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Relying on previously undisclosed confessions of former mafia members now cooperating with the police, Letizia Paoli provides a clinically accurate portrait of mafia behavior, motivations, and structure in Italy. The mafia, Paoli demonstrates, are essentially multifunctional ritual brotherhoods focused above all on retaining and consolidating their local political power base. A truly interdisciplinary work of history, politics, economics, and sociology, Mafia Brotherhoods reveals in dramatic detail the true face of one of the world's most mythologized criminal organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a detailed study of the political role of a criminal organization, the Neapolitan Camorra, in its historical context, that of Naples over the last fifty years. In Campania, until 1991, the population tacitly accepted the relationship between the Camorra and the local political elite (based on the exchange of votes for state contracts and protection), and because of the lack of reliable sources it could not seriously be studied by political scientists. In 1991, however, a law was passed which gave generous remission of sentences to criminals who wanted to cooperate with the police. Following this, many members of the Camorra revealed important aspects of the criminal, economic and political activities of their organization. This new information has permitted a re-examination of the Camorra and has provided material for the story to be told.

Book excerpt: This volume represents the first attempt to systematically compare organised crime concepts, as well as historical and contemporary patterns and control policies in thirteen European countries. These include seven ‘old’ EU Member States, two ‘new’ members, a candidate country, and three non-EU countries. Based on a standardised research protocol, thirty-three experts from different legal and social disciplines provide insight through detailed country reports. On this basis, the editors compare organised crime patterns and policies in Europe and assess EU initiatives against organised crime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays organized crime is a very important political issue in Europe. However, scientific studies on the nature and seriousness of this problem are very scarce in the member states of the Council of Europe and the European Union. This national study on organized crime in the Netherlands was prepared for the Commission of Inquiry of the Dutch Parliament that recently made an investigation into the regulation and use of undercover policing. It not only contains an analysis of the contemporary manifestations of traditional organized crime, but also answers the question whether organized crime already has penetrated legitimate sectors of the economy or not. In addition special attention is paid to the role of the liberal professions and the banking system; and to the use of counter-strategies by criminal groups (corruption, intimidation, violence, disinformation, etc.)
