Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Midnight, March 12, 1963. Mississippi State's president crouched low in the passenger seat, heading for the Alabama state line to escape from an injunction to keep the team home. In a second car, the athletic director and the basketball coach were fleeing for Tennessee. A team of decoys was heading to the airport the next morning. All this for a little ol' ballgame? There are those who call this "little ol' ballgame" the greatest victory for equality since Jackie Robinson joined the major leagues. Mississippi State's dramatic escape marked the end of the "Unwritten Law" and a profound change in what segregationists called "the Southern way of life." Right away, all major Southern universities began to actively recruit black athletes. This book is an eyewitness account of how a quiet-spoken university president defied the nation's most racist governor by engineering his team's escape from Mississippi to play in an integrated NCAA tournament, a move that would shatter segregation forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coming of age for a Caulbearer appeared to be a far fetched conclusion, that is, until this innocent child by the name of Terry entered into the treacherous game of life. What goes up must come down, the child's destiny's plight demanded. What goes around must also come back around as the superstitious moto's of societies norms dominated, that is, prior to Terry's conception. However, to the contrary, born under rather extrinsic circumstances, Terry has acquired at birth, various powers he must learn to use for good or evil and the choice is totally up to him. "Wherefore, should society have the gall to alter the plight of a Caulbearer's destiny? The same reason community norms have become inundated with columns upon columns of individuals incapable of withholding the secrets of ritualistic indecencies. No one really escapes from Mississippi, some just leave, while others remain within the confines of the domain of there forefathers. December 1969 Greenwood, Mississippi is the place this Caulbearer child entered into the realm of modified involuntary servitude. Ominous toward injustice, moral turpitude and poverty, this special child could very well, change the the course of history. Surrealistic narrations has the childs adversaries on the edge of uncertainty, and the blunders that shall come to past are, in fact, orchestrated by the subliminal inner powers of the Caulbearer.

Book excerpt: "Escaping the Dogs of Mississippi" is a first-hand account of the entrenched racism, segregation, even hatred experienced by the author, Dewitt Brown, which were so prevalent in the deep South, but were indeed not limited by geography, but driven by the sinful nature of men everywhere. Yes, these were the two-legged dogs, both Black and White, who abused and misused any real or self-imposed advantages they had over others to their benefit and to other's dismay. Lastly, the book describes an escape from oneself, the inner-dog, to a resting place that only Jesus Christ could provide.

Book excerpt: Although the northern Illinois chapters of the story of Susan "Sukey" Richardson's escape from slavery on the Underground Railroad are documented, the part played by southern Illinois in that historic episode has remained obscure. This book changes that by investigating the 1843 suit Andrew Borders lodged against William Hayes, charging his neighbor with helping slaves from the Borders estate escape to Galesburg. The author documents Hayes's involvement in the Illinois Underground Railroad through approximately two hundred letters received by Hayes from the early 1820s until his death in 1849. Many of these letters specifically corroborate his participation in the escape of slaves from the Borders estate. Letters written by Galesburg residents show that several prominent citizens of that community also assisted in the affair, proving that Knox College administrators and trustees were active in the Underground Railroad. The author also includes excerpts from the trial transcript from the 1844 civil case against Hayes, which was tried in Pinckneyville, Illinois. She researched newspaper accounts of the event, most notably those in the Western Citizen and the Sparta Herald. Records of the Covenanter Presbyterian church of which Hayes was a member provide partial explanations of Hayes's motives.

Book excerpt: A crime reporter’s thrilling account of the infamous 2015 prison break, manhunt, and capture based on interviews with one of the inmates who pulled it off. On June 6, 2015, inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility, New York State’s largest maximum-security prison. The media was instantly obsessed with the story: Aided by a prison seamstress, who smuggled hacksaw blades, chisels, and drill bits inside the facility via a vat of raw hamburger meat, the two convicted murderers sliced their way through steel cell walls, navigated a maze of tunnels, climbed out of a manhole, and walked off into the night. After nearly three weeks on the run, US Customs and Border Patrol agent Chris Voss shot and killed Matt on June 26, 2015. Two days later, New York State Police Sgt. Jay Cook shot Sweat twice in the back. He survived. While some details of this elaborate modern-day prison break have come to light, only one reporter has spoken directly to Sweat. In Wild Escape, he answers the most important question in the case: Of all the inmates who dream of escape, why was he the one who could make it happen? “The details Marcius has amassed are comprehensive and stunning and serve to heighten the impact of her story. This is first-rate journalism, written about a crime and a criminal from the inside out.” —Stephen Singular, New York Times–bestselling author of Talked to Death “Marcius writes with genuine narrative power. Her depth of research provides insights into this historical escape that we can’t get anywhere else.” —Anthony Flacco, New York Times and international bestselling author of The Road Out of Hell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journal of the Indian Wars, or JIW was a quarterly publication on the study of the American Indian Wars. Before JIW, no periodical dedicated exclusively to this fascinating topic was available. JIW's focus was on warfare in the United States, Canada, and the Spanish borderlands from 1492 to 1890. Published articles also include personalities, policy, and military technologies. JIW was designed to satisfy both professional and lay readers with original articles of lasting value and a variety of columns of interest, plus book reviews, all enhanced with maps and illustrations. JIW's lengthy essays of substance are presented in a fresh and entertaining manner. Most readers of the Civil War and Indian War history know that a small force of Indians participated in the Battle of Pea Ridge; John Pope was banished to Minnesota after his disastorous performance at Second Bull Run to face the rebellious Sioux; Stand Watie and Ely Parker rose to high rank in the Confederate and Union armies, respectively; and a region labeled simply "Indian Territory" existed somewhere in the Trans-Mississippi Theater. All true. Yet the situation of American Indians during the Civil War period was much more complex, their fate more devastating and far-reaching than most students appreciate. Each of the articles in this issue underscore this point. In this edition: Foreword Firm but Fair: The Minnesota Volunteers and the Coming of the Dakota War of 1862 The Most Terrible Stories: The 1862 Dakota Conflict in White Imagination Chiefs by Commission: Stand Watie and Ely Parker Flowing with Blood and Whiskey: Stand Watie and the Battles of First and Second Cabin Creek Nations Asunder: Western American Indian Experiences During the Civil War, 1861-1865, Part I Interview: A Conversation with Battlefield Interpreter Doug Keller Features: Wisconsin's 1832 Black Hawk Trail The Indian Wars: Organizational, Tribal, and Museum News Thomas Online: Daughters of the Lance: Native American Women Warriors Book Reviews Index
