Imagine the adventures and escapes a young RAAF pilot would, and could, get up to 1970’s Vietnam. Think a mix of the late Robin Williams’ “Good Morning Vietnam” and Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jnr.’s “Air America”, and you soon realise why, when Marman put pen to paper the result was “The McAlister Line”. So, be prepared to be taken back to a time in the Earth’s history when young men were once again thrust into a conflict of the politician’s making. And like young men everywhere, when put into extraordinary and unnatural circumstances, the adventures and escapes, too, are extraordinary. Also to be noted, Marman has flown just about every aircraft he mentions in the books of the McAlister Line. Especially aimed at young adults (YA), as he was when he was thrust into the 1970’s Vietname War, the 4th book in the McAlister Line starts with Danny recovering from injuries suffered at Dien Bien Phu, gets straight back into action in Saigon via way of Taipei. The 17th Parallel has just been created with the communists to the North. But South Vietnam is awash spies and agents from the CIA, MI6 and other secret service types from the West, but especially Russian, Chinese and with North Vietnamese infiltrators, all vying to fill the, soon to be, power vacuum currently being created by the French who are starting to pull out of Indochina. Still flying for CAT airlines, commonly referred to as the “most shot-at airline in the world”, Monty and Angela join him as they plunge headlong into another non-stop, breathtaking odyssey across five continents, landing in one desperate scrape after another. Finally all three make heart-breaking decisions which ultimately define their true allegiance. -------------- McAlister’s Line Reader Reviews from YAbookscentral.com ...with pirates and secrets set amongst the northern tropics, you're in for a delightful read. It has a really good sense of place and from the voice to the detail it's a very fast moving action story that will leave you wanting more. McAlister's Way is a fast paced, page turning read, the kind of read where you lose track of time. Absolutely enveloping! Highly Recommend!!

Book excerpt: Herein you will find 17 tales and short stories by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley author of the acclaimed “Frankenstein”. It was during a summer spent with Lord Byron and friends near Geneva in 1816, that Mary conceived the idea for her novel Frankenstein. The Shelleys left Britain in 1818 for Italy and it was during this time that the collected tales and stories in this volume were penned. These are the stuff of Mary Shelley's richly Romantic stories. Set against varying backdrops of medieval chivalry, the wars and revolutions of her age, and grandiose scenes of nature, her tales mark a high point in the Gothic storytelling art. Long out of the public’s eye, these stories are once again made available in ebook format. Tragically in 1822, her husband, the acclaimed poet, Percy Shelley, drowned when his sailing boat sank during a storm near Viareggio. Thereafter Mary Shelley returned to Britain to focus on bringing up her only living child, Percy Florence Shelley. REVIEWS "Beyond question Shelley scholars and 19th-century specialists will value this usefully annotated and carefully produced edition; it may also be that anyone would enjoy the stories themselves...and the accompanying original engravings."--Diane Johnson, 'Washington Post.' ---------------------------- TAGS: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, author, Frankenstein, eighteen tales, 18 stories, gothic, storytelling, Sisters Of Albano, Ferdinando Eboli, Evil Eye, The Dream, Mourner, False Rhyme, Tale Of The Passions; Death Of Despina, Mortal, Immortal, Transformation, Swiss Peasant, Invisible Girl, Brother And Sister, Parvenue, Pole, Polish, Euphrasia, Elder Son, Pilgrims, Percy Florence Shelley, Percy Blysse Shelley, Geneva, Lord Byron, Summer, holiday, Italy, son, husband, death, drowning, 19th Century

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this inspiring meditation on courage, Senator John McCain shares his most cherished stories of ordinary individuals who have risked everything to defend the people and principles they hold most dear. “We are taught to understand, correctly, that courage is not the absence of fear but the capacity for action despite our fears,” McCain reminds us, as a way of introducing the stories of figures both famous and obscure that he finds most compelling—from the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to Sgt. Roy Benavidez, who ignored his own well-being to rescue eight of his men from an ambush in the Vietnam jungle; from 1960s civil rights leader John Lewis, who wrote, “When I care about something, I’m prepared to take the long, hard road,” to Hannah Senesh, who, in protecting her comrades in the Hungarian resistance against Hitler’s SS, chose a martyr’s death over a despot’s mercy. These are some of the examples McCain turns to for inspiration and offers to others to help them summon the resolve to be both good and great. He explains the value of courage in both everyday actions and extraordinary feats. We learn why moral principles and physical courage are often not distinct quantities but two sides of the same coin. Most of all, readers discover how sometimes simply setting the right example can be the ultimate act of courage. Written by one of our most respected public figures, Why Courage Matters is that rare book with a message both timely and timeless. This is a work for anyone seeking to understand how the mystery and gift of courage can empower us and change our lives. Praise for Why Courage Matters “[John] McCain the man remains one of the most inspiring public figures of his generation.”—The Washington Post Book World “Thrilling . . . John McCain’s profiles in courage offer inspiration. . . . A marvelous collection of stories featuring honest-to-God heroes.”—Fort Worth Star-Telegram “Extraordinary . . . McCain proves how courage can change lives and improve the world.”—New York Daily News “[McCain] is open and candid, a refuge from spin and arrogance.”—The Washington Post “Wise words from a man who personifies courage.”—The Sunday Oklahoman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, Kentuckians rushed from farms to factories and battlefields, leaving agriculture throughout the state--particularly the lucrative tobacco industry--without sufficient labor. An influx of Axis prisoners of war made up the shortfall. Nearly 10,000 German and Italian POWs were housed in camps at Campbell, Breckinridge, Knox and other locations across the state. Under the Geneva Convention, they worked for their captors and helped save Kentucky's crops, while enjoying relative comfort as prisoners--playing sports, performing musicals and taking college classes. Yet, friction between Nazi and anti-Nazi inmates threatened the success of the program. This book chronicles the POW program in Kentucky and the vital contributions the Bluegrass State made to Allied victory.

There were at least 10,000 of them, deployed in 25 Florida camps between 1942 and 1946. They were also members of the Wehrmacht, Hitler's armed forces."--Forum "Most Americans were unaware their government was housing Hitler's soldiers on its shores. . . . Billinger weaves interviews with former prisoners, American soldiers who worked in the camps, newspaper accounts, and government documents into a stunning historical narrative."--Kansas City Star "A tropical paradise that for some became a tropical hell."--Sarasota Herald-Tribune "First came crewmen of destroyed U-boats, then thousands of Afrika Korps veterans who swamped the system in 1943. Pro-Nazi, arrogant, and tough, they defied U.S. authorities, terrorized anti-Nazi inmates, and rioted."--Choice "Filled with colorful personal accounts, this historical book packs the punch of fiction."--St. Petersburg Times "Billinger's first-rate history of this little-known chapter in American history teaches us that, in spite of wartime propaganda, our enemies are human, too."--Atlantic City Press "Hard to put down."--Daytona Beach News-Journal In the first book-length treatment of the German prisoner of war experience in Florida during World War II, Robert D. Billinger, Jr., tells the story of the 10,000 men who were "guests" of Uncle Sam in a tropical paradise that for some became a tropical hell. Having been captured while serving on U-boats off the Carolinas, with the Afrika Korps in Tunisia, with the paratroops in Italy, or with labor battalions in France, the POWs were among the 378,000 Germans held as prisoners in 45 states. Except for the servicemen who guarded them, the civilian pulp-cutters, citrus growers, and sugarcane foremen who worked them, and the FBI and local police who tracked the escapees among them, most people were--and still are--unaware of the German POWs who inhabited the 27 camps that dotted the Sunshine State. Billinger describes the experiences of the Germans and their captors as both sides came to the realization that, while the Germans’ worst enemies were often their own comrades-in-arms, wartime enemies might also become life-long friends. Concentrating especially on the story of Camp Blanding in North Florida, Billinger based his research on both American and German archives. His account mixes rare photos with interviews with former prisoners; reports by the International Red Cross, the YMCA, and the U.S. military; and local newspaper articles. This book will be of great value to scholars and historians, as well as all readers with an interest in World War II. Those with an interest in Florida history will also find much to admire in this engaging account of a barely known wartime episode. A volume in The Florida History and Culture Series, edited by Raymond Arsenault and Gary R. Mormino.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling Sex in Captivity is the first book to examine the nature, extent and impact of the sexual activities of Axis prisoners of war in the United States during the Second World War. Historians have so far interpreted the interactions between captors and captives in America as the beginning of the post-war friendship between the United States, Germany and Italy. Matthias Reiss argues that this paradigm is too simplistic. Widespread fraternisation also led to sexual relationships which created significant negative publicity, and some Axis POWs got caught up in the U.S. Army's new campaign against homosexuals. By focusing on the fight against fraternisation and same-sex activities, this study treads new ground. It stresses that contact between captors and captives was often loaded with conflict and influenced by perceptions of gender and race. It highlights the transnational impact of fraternisation and argues that the prisoners' sojourn in the United States also influenced American society by fuelling a growing concern about social disintegration and sexual deviancy, which eventually triggered a conservative backlash after the war.
