Estos trabajos coinciden en una idea más general: el carácter transnacional del cine contemporáneo no es un asunto estrictamente cinematográfico, sino también político, pues tanto su realidad como su imaginario geopolítico afectan también al propio concepto de ciudadanía.

This book provides a snapshot of visual adaptations in the first two decades of the new millennium, examining how novelistic material from the past has been remediated for today's viewers through film, television, theater, opera, and the graphic novel. Its theoretical approach refines the binary view of adapters as either honoring or opposing their source texts by positing three types of adaptation strategies: salvaging (which preserves old stories by giving them renewed life for modern audiences), utilizing (which draws upon a pre-existing text for an alternative purpose, building upon the story and creating a shift in emphasis without devaluing the source material), and appropriation (which involves a critique of the source text, often with an attempt to dismantle its authority). Special attention is given to how adapters address audiences that are familiar with the source novels, and those that are not. This examination of the vibrant afterlife of classic literature will be of interest to scholars and educators in the fields of adaptation, media, Spanish literature, cultural studies, performance, and the graphic arts.

De la mano del personaje principal, vamos descubriendo el sub mundo incomprensible, a veces absurdo y hostil, en el que nos movemos constantemente sin percatarnos apenas de su presencia. Vivimos el día a día y los actos que rigen nuestra conducta para con los demás, aquellos que nos son ajenos o extraños son, en el mejor de los casos, de una total arrogancia. En no pocas ocasiones, los miramos con un desprecio poco disimulado, porque los consideramos seres sin valor, objetos que se pueden comprar o vender, insultar o lastimar sin que sintamos culpa por ello. Los valores que regían nuestra conducta, hasta bien entrada la última parte del siglo veinte, se han ido perdiendo poco a poco, para dar paso a una nueva visión del mundo, con enfoques que a muchos nos parecen ruines y perversos. Pero no se piense, por esto, que todo está perdido. Book excerpt: This book addresses contemporary discourses on a wide variety of topics related to the ideological and epistemological changes of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and the ways in which they have shaped the Spanish language and cultural manifestations in both Spain and Hispanic America. The majority of the chapters are concerned with ‘otherness’ in its various dimensions; the alien Other – foreign, immigrant, ethnically different, disempowered, female or minor – as well as the Other of different sexual orientation and/or ideology. Following Octavio Paz, otherness is expressed as the attempt to find the lost object of desire, the frustrating endeavour of the androgynous Plato wishing to embrace the other half of Zeus, who in his wrath, tore off from him. Otherness compels human beings to search for the complement from which they were severed. Thus a male joins a female, his other half, the only half that not only fills him but which allows him to return to the unity and reconciliation which is restored in its own perfection, formerly altered by divine will. As a result of this transformation, one can annul the distance that keeps us away from that which, not being our own, turns into a source of anguish. The clashing diversity of all things requires the human predisposition to accept that which is different. Such a predisposition is an expression of epistemological, ethical and political aperture. The disposition to co-exist with the different is imagined in the de-anthropocentricization of the bonds with all living realms. And otherness is, in some way, the reflection of sameness (mismidad). The other is closely related to the self, because the vision of the other implies a reflection about the self; it implies, consciously or not, a relationship with the self. These topics are addressed in this book from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing arts, humanities and social sciences.
