Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boundary Element Methods (BEM) has become one of the most efficient tools for solving various kinds of problems in engineering science. The International Association for Boundary Element Methods (IABEM) was established in order to promote and facilitate the exchange of scientific ideas related to the theory and applications of boundary element methods. The aim of this symposium is to provide a forum for researchers in boundary element methods and boundary-integral formulations in general to present contemporary concepts and techniques leading to the advancement of capabilities and understanding of this com putational methodology. The topics covered in this symposium include mathematical and computational aspects, applications to solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, acoustics, electromagnetics, heat transfer, optimization, control, inverse problems and other interdisciplinary problems. Papers deal ing with the coupling of the boundary element method with other computational methods are also included. The editors hope that this volume presents some innovative techniques and useful knowl edge for the development of the boundary element methods. February, 1992 S. Kobayashi N. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called boundary element methods BEM, i.e. finite element approxima tions of boundary integral equations have been improved recently even more vividly then ever before and found some remarkable support by the German Research Foundation DFG in the just finished Priority Research Program "boundary element methods" . When this program began, we could start from several already existing particular activities which then during the six years initiated many new re sults and decisive new developments in theory and algorithms. The program was started due to encouragement by E. Stein, when most of the later par ticipants met in Stuttgart at a Boundary Element Conference 1987. Then W. Hackbusch, G. Kuhn, S. Wagner and W. Wendland were entrusted with writing the proposal which was 1988 presented at the German Research Foun dation and started in 1989 with 14 projects at 11 different universities. After German unification, the program was heavily extended by six more projects, four of which located in Eastern Germany. When we started, we were longing for the following goals: 1. Mathematicians and engineers should do joint research. 2. Methods and computational algorithms should be streamlined with re spect to the new computer architectures of vector and parallel computers. 3. The asymptotic error analysis of boundary element methods should be further developed. 4. Non-linear material laws should be taken care of by boundary element methods for crack-mechanics. 5. The coupling of finite boundary elements should be improved.

Beside some historical and more analytical aspects in the formulation and analysis of boundary integral equations, modern fast boundary element methods are also described and analyzed from a mathematical point of view. In addition, the book presents engineering and industrial applications that show the ability of boundary element methods to solve challenging problems from different fields.

Book excerpt: This title is devoted to the formulation and implementation of new reliable and efficient error indicators capable of providing adaptive meshing processes in the Boundary Element Method (BEM). It is organised in four sections. The first gives a review of the basic equations of solid mechanics, while the second presents the boundary integral equations required to formulate conventional and higher order boundary elements. The third section focuses on the computation of the stresses on the boundary and provides an attractive alternative global re-analysis technique which can be used to obtain accurate values for those quantities. In the final section the authors review some of the most relevant error indicators that have been proposed and present two new alternatives that can be used to estimate the error in the numerical solution obtained with the BEM.The self-contained treatment of topics and the new alternatives proposed to compute reliable and efficient error indicators make this text a valuable reference for readers interested in learning about adaptive meshing techniques, as well as for researchers working in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major motivation behind the Boundary Element Method (BEM) was to reduce the dependency of analysis on the definition of meshes. This has allowed the method to expand naturally into new techniques such as Dual Reciprocity and all other Mesh reduction Methods (MRM). MRM and BEM continue to be very active areas of research with many of the resulting techniques applied to solve increasingly complex problems. This book contains papers presented at the much-acclaimed thirtieth International Conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reductions Methods . The proceedings contain papers on practically all major developments in Boundary Elements, including the most recent MRM techniques, grouped under the following topics: Fluid Flow; Heat Transfer; Electrical Engineering and Electromagnetics; Damage Mechanics and Fracture; Mesh Reduction Techniques; Advanced Computational Techniques

Book excerpt: Finite Element Methods are used for numerous engineering applications where numerical solutions of partial differential equations are needed. As computers can now deal with the millions of parameters used in these methods, automatic error estimation and automatic adaptation of the utilised method (according to this error estimation), has become a hot research topic. This text offers comprehensive coverage of this new field of automatic adaptation and error estimation, bringing together the work of eight outstanding researchers in this field who have completed a six year national research project within the German Science Foundation. The result is a state-of-the-art work in true reference style. Each chapter is self-contained and covers theoretical, algorithmic and software presentations as well as solved problems. A main feature consists of several carefully elaborated benchmarks of 2D- and 3D- applications. * First book to go beyond the Finite Element Method in itself * Covers material from a new research area * Presents benchmarks of 2D- and 3D- applications * Fits with the new trend for genetic strategies in engineering

Book excerpt: Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method presents an introduction as well as recent developments of this accurate, powerful, and versatile method. The formulation possesses the attractive feature of producing a symmetric coefficient matrix. In addition, the Galerkin approximation allows standard continuous elements to be used for evaluation of hypersingular integrals. FEATURES • Written in a form suitable for a graduate level textbook as well as a self-learning tutorial in the field. • Covers applications in two-dimensional and three-dimensional problems of potential theory and elasticity. Additional basic topics involve axisymmetry, multi-zone and interface formulations. More advanced topics include fluid flow (wave breaking over a sloping beach), non-homogeneous media, functionally graded materials (FGMs), anisotropic elasticity, error estimation, adaptivity, and fracture mechanics. • Presents integral equations as a basis for the formulation of general symmetric Galerkin boundary element methods and their corresponding numerical implementation. • Designed to convey effective unified procedures for the treatment of singular and hypersingular integrals that naturally arise in the method. Symbolic codes using Maple® for singular-type integrations are provided and discussed in detail. • The user-friendly adaptive computer code BEAN (Boundary Element ANalysis), fully written in Matlab®, is available as a companion to the text. The complete source code, including the graphical user-interface (GUI), can be downloaded from the web site http://www.ghpaulino.com/SGBEM_book. The source code can be used as the basis for building new applications, and should also function as an effective teaching tool. To facilitate the use of BEAN, a video tutorial and a library of practical examples are provided.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the mathematical analysis of the numerical solution of boundary integral equations treating boundary value, transmission and contact problems arising in elasticity, acoustic and electromagnetic scattering. It serves as the mathematical foundation of the boundary element methods (BEM) both for static and dynamic problems. The book presents a systematic approach to the variational methods for boundary integral equations including the treatment with variational inequalities for contact problems. It also features adaptive BEM, hp-version BEM, coupling of finite and boundary element methods – efficient computational tools that have become extremely popular in applications. Familiarizing readers with tools like Mellin transformation and pseudodifferential operators as well as convex and nonsmooth analysis for variational inequalities, it concisely presents efficient, state-of-the-art boundary element approximations and points to up-to-date research. The authors are well known for their fundamental work on boundary elements and related topics, and this book is a major contribution to the modern theory of the BEM (especially for error controlled adaptive methods and for unilateral contact and dynamic problems) and is a valuable resource for applied mathematicians, engineers, scientists and graduate students.
