Book excerpt: Denis Roches new domain, or realm, for poetry as evidenced in ros nergumne (Eros Raving: ditions du Seuil) is poetry derived from pulsion, an undeniable inner force or energy that drives the poem into being and controls and mandates its origin, source, structure, form, content, rhythm and outcome. This creative energy is clearly the reason the erotic takes such precedence and possession of the poetic. It is also quite understandable, with this complex demand for a new poetic where poems are neither viewed nor recited, why Roche turned to photography and the visual autobiography of his photographs, having perhaps pushed poetry to an absolute limit beyond letter and sound. He asserts, however, that this is a meaningless distinction, one only that critics make, because for him there is no difference between the creative acts of photography and writing. For Roche the difference between literature and photography is profound: with literature one can only speak about time without ever showing it. One discourses about time, one does not figure it. With photography, yes. He also says: Jcris pour tre seul, je photographie pour disparitre. (I write to be alone, I photograph in order to disappear.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the strange eros that haunts Foucault’s writing? In this deeply original consideration of Foucault’s erotic ethics, Lynne Huffer provocatively rewrites Foucault as a Sapphic poet. She uncovers eros as a mode of thought that erodes the interiority of the thinking subject. Focusing on the ethical implications of this mode of thought, Huffer shows how Foucault’s poetic archival method offers a way to counter the disciplining of speech. At the heart of this method is a conception of the archive as Sapphic: the past’s remains are, like Sappho’s verses, hole-ridden, scattered, and dissolved by time. Listening for eros across fragmented texts, Huffer stages a series of encounters within an archive of literary and theoretical readings: the eroticization of violence in works by Freud and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, the historicity of madness in the Foucault-Derrida debate, the afterlives of Foucault’s antiprison activism, and Monique Wittig’s Sapphic materialism. Through these encounters, Foucault’s Strange Eros conceives of ethics as experiments in living that work poetically to make the present strange. Crafting fragments that dissolve into Sapphic brackets, Huffer performs the ethics she describes in her own practice of experimental writing. Foucault’s Strange Eros hints at the self-hollowing speech of an eros that opens a space for the strange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although recent theory in multicultural education has acknowledged what has been called "the new cultural politics of difference," problems concerning what actually passes for multiculturalism have been underexamined. Translating the Curriculum proposes that a new theoretical and practical lens through which to examine multicultural education is necessary and suggests that it may be found in cultural studies. Edgerton looks at pedagogy through structuralist and poststructuralist philosophy and social theory, literary criticism, literature, and autobiography. Using this interdisciplinary approach, notions of marginality, essentialism, identity and translation across difference are explored.

Book excerpt: Nearly all of the poems in this collection were written within a period of three months, consecutively, one a day. I deliberately set myself the task of writing a poem a day for as long as I could sustain the effort and keep my creative energy flowing. I had before in my writing career brief periods of intense creativity where I wrote poems every day; for example, when I was finishing my sonnet sequence, Mediterranean Sonnets, I wrote fourteen sonnets in as many days. These are memorable creative episodes because they don't come often and the poems deriving from such an intense focused activity are always unified and consistent in a qualitative manner, by form and technique, metrics, and poetic pulsion. The imagination grasps things with unusual claritas. These sessions are always pleasurable because-as Seamus Heaney once said to me after he himself had experienced such a period of creativity and productivity-they bolster a bit the poet's belief in his own genius. Not that genius should be measured by the bucketful, but there is a certain confirmed value in sustained performance. Many poets, of course, have achieved similar and greater feats of poetic muscularity, in the modern era Rilke for one, in writing Sonnets to Orpheus (February 2 - 5, 1922, at Chateau de Muzot in Switzerland), and William Carlos Williams, who wrote something every day for a year for Kora in Hell: Improvisations (1917- September 1918; published in 1920), and this while he was working every day as a pediatrician and general physician in his "other" profession. Williams vowed not to change a word as written; of course this did not happen, as his critical faculties prevailed, as have mine in this collection. I am myself pleased and surprised by how many of these poems stand as first written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have written many Concrete Visual and Shaped (CVS) poems over the years. Most of them were designed to be broadsides or poster poems, large and impressive by their size and presence. Most of them, however, were never published commercially because the cost of the artwork and print runs were too expensive for me. It is also difficult to find printers who want to set up and run a limited edition of 500 or fewer broadside or poster poems, especially if they require careful color registration and special printing and paper. The only poem that was printed in the manner I envisioned and planned was "Lonely Nights & Wild Women Auto Poem State Four." This I printed under the imprint of my own press, Light ٠ Gravity, which I founded in 1970. Artwork and camera-ready versions were also completed for two other poems included here, "Elbow" and "Voyageurs Metropolitains." Ten of the CVS poems in this collection were privately printed and distributed by me in 2006 in a special edition I prepared for my friends under the imprint of my own press, Light ٠ Gravity, Berkeley, California. That was their first limited public appearance. Friends who knew about these CVS poems requested that I provide copies for them, which I did. Some of the recipients of the limited edition are listed in the acknowledgements to this edition. For the privately printed edition. individually numbered and signed, I selected ten CVS poems that I created and designed entirely myself, and provided a brief history and background for each poem and an essay on "How to Read," which I have also included here. This commercial edition includes four additional poems previously published in my other books of poems, but which I think important to add to this collection of my CVS poems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous frescos in the Campo Santo at Pisa painted in the 1340's include striking images of "The Triumph of Death," "The Devil," "Hell", and "The Last Judgement." The cemetery of the Campo Santo contains shiploads of earth imported from the Holy Land. The Campo Santo was damaged by Allied air strikes during World War II. The restoration of the frescos revealed the drawings beneath the frescos, which have also been meticulously and wonderully restored. I visited Pisa three times to see the Leaning Tower, which I climbed on my first visit, now no longer permitted. It was a dizzying and unbalanced experience, a feeling that produced new insights and ideas. At my home one evening rocking in my family rocker where my mother rocked and nursed her eight children, I almost lost my balance and tipped over backward, which made me think of The Leaning Tower of Pisa and Galileo's experiments with gravity there. I also remembered that Copernicus lived in a leaning tower. The opening passage of my poem reproduces the feeling of being out-of-balance. The "Premonitions" poems are fitting prophecies.

This is the scope of designer Steven Heller’s latest essay anthology that covers the spectrum of graphic design and related art and culture. Looking at design as practice, language, culture, and power, each of the forty-plus essays is a self-contained story. Heller pours out his ideas—criticisms and celebrations—on such topics as: A history of our modern Hindu-Arabic numerals, and a look at the letter K Brand design utilized by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump early in the 2016 Presidential race The tumultuous relationship between design and sex The Charlie Hebdo massacre and the principles of free expression Icons revisited, including Paul Rand (not to be confused with the politician Rand Paul), Ralph Ginzburg, Frank Zachary, George Lois, and Print magazine Food packaging, the design of milk, and USPS stamps The obsessive use of cuteness, and the sad and happy history of the ubiquitous happy face From commercial advertising to government institutions to cultural revolution, from the objects that push design forward to those that seep into the everyday, Graphic Design Rants and Raves is an exploration of how visual design has arrived in the twenty-first century. Allworth Press, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing, publishes a broad range of books on the visual and performing arts, with emphasis on the business of art. Our titles cover subjects such as graphic design, theater, branding, fine art, photography, interior design, writing, acting, film, how to start careers, business and legal forms, business practices, and more. Book excerpt: The love song is timeless. From its beginnings, it has been shaped by bohemians and renegades, slaves and oppressed minorities, prostitutes, immigrants and other excluded groups. But what do we really know about the origins of these intimate expressions of the heart? And how have our changing perceptions about topics such as sexuality and gender roles changed our attitudes towards these songs? In Love Songs: The Hidden History, Ted Gioia uncovers the unexplored story of the love song for the first time. Drawing on two decades of research, Gioia presents the full range of love songs, from the fertility rites of ancient cultures to the sexualized YouTube videos of the present day. The book traces the battles over each new insurgency in the music of love--whether spurred by wandering scholars of medieval days or by four lads from Liverpool in more recent times. In these pages, Gioia reveals that the tenderest music has, in different eras, driven many of the most heated cultural conflicts, and how the humble love song has played a key role in expanding the sphere of individualism and personal autonomy in societies around the world. Gioia forefronts the conflicts, controversies, and the battles over censorship and suppression spurred by such music, revealing the outsiders and marginalized groups that have played a decisive role in shaping our songs of romance and courtship, and the ways their innovations have led to reprisals and strife. And he describes the surprising paths by which the love song has triumphed over these obstacles, and emerged as the dominant form of musical expression in modern society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume on the metaphysical traditions of the West, von Balthasar presents a series of studies of representative mystics, theologians, philosophers and poets and explores the three main streams of metaphysics which have developed since the 'catastrophe' of Nominalism. The way of self-abandonment to the divine glory is traced through figures like Eckhart, Julian of Norwich, Ignatius, de Sales; the attempt to relocate theology in a recovery of antiquity's sense of being and beauty through figures like Nicholas of Cusa, Holderlin, Goethe, Heidegger; the metaphysics of spirit through Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza, and the Idealists. The strengths and weaknesses of these ways are relentlessly exposed. The volume ends with the search for the Christian contribution to metaphysics.
