Download or read book AASHTO Transportation Glossary written by and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2009 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 2009 AASHTO Transportation Glossary is an update and revision of the 1983 Transportation Glossary and the 1998 Transportation Glossary, which was unpublished. The largest additions in terminology were in bridge and drainage subjects. The new Glossary also includes lists of organizational acronyms, abbreviations, and other glossary references. Terms and definitions in this glossary were taken from an unpublished 1998 AASHTO Glossary and supplemented with definitions listed in AASHTO publications issued after 1998. Several additional sources were also referenced, including the Highway Capacity Manual, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Code of Federal Regulations-Title 23, an FHWA list of roundabout terminology, and the Transportation Research Thesaurus. Glossary terms are listed in alphabetical order regardless of transportation mode. However, the glossary also includes two indexes-subject area and keyword-which provide cross references for the user."--AASHTO Bookstore website (viewed June 24, 2.

Book Synopsis The Carrier's Liability for Deck Cargo by : Lina Wiedenbach
Download or read book The Carrier's Liability for Deck Cargo written by Lina Wiedenbach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the carrier’s liability for deck cargo in the Nordic countries and England as state parties of the Hague-Visby Rules. The comparative method serves to illustrate two widely differing methods of dealing with, first, the exclusion of certain deck cargo from the scope of the Hague-Visby Rules and, second, where not excluded, the Rules failure to include a special deck cargo liability regime. Various solutions similar to the English or Nordic approach, or a combination of the two, have also been adopted in a large number of other jurisdictions. Taking into consideration the massive quantities of cargo that are carried on deck today, the subject is more topical than ever. The complexity of the problem stems from the way in which the deck has, over the years, gradually become a common place to stow cargo. When the Hague Rules were introduced in 1924, deck stowage was an absolute exception due to the great risks involved. As such, the topic must first be looked at in the context of the shipping realities in which the Hague Rules were drafted and then in terms of today’s shipping realities. The comparative analysis leading up to the author’s conclusions and general remarks for future legislation consists of two parts, the first dealing with the situations in which the carrier is permitted to stow cargo on deck, and the second with the carrier’s liability for deck cargo where he has stowed cargo on deck with, or as the case may be, without such permission.

Book Synopsis The Secret Sharer and Other Stories (International Student Edition) (Norton Critical Editions) by : Joseph Conrad
Download or read book The Secret Sharer and Other Stories (International Student Edition) (Norton Critical Editions) written by Joseph Conrad and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Norton Critical Edition includes four stories—two set on stormy seas, two on calm seas, all four based on the same incident—that speak to each other in interesting ways. The stories in this Norton Critical Edition maintain the connection and sequencing that Joseph Conrad saw among them. In his “Author’s Note” to ‘Twixt Land and Sea, Conrad writes of his two “Calm-pieces” (“The Secret Sharer” and The Shadow-Line) and his two “Storm-pieces” (The Nigger of the “Narcissus” and “Typhoon”). This edition is based on the first English book edition for the stories and the first American edition for the “Author’s Note” for The Shadow-Line, “Typhoon,” and “The Secret Sharer.” The stories are accompanied by explanatory annotations, a note on the texts (including a list of textual emendations), and a preface. “Backgrounds and Contexts” brings together relevant correspondence and contemporary reviews from both British and American sources. Also included are documents related to Conrad’s sources for the stories, among them Charles Arthur Sankey’s “Ordeal of the Cutty Sark: A True Story of Mutiny, Murder on the High Seas.” To help readers navigate, the editor includes a glossary of nautical terms as well as diagrams of the kinds of ships that appear in the stories. “Criticism” includes fifteen essays representing both new and established voices. The essays are arranged by story, with the focus on Conrad’s major themes—colonialism, narrative, gender, and race. Albert J. Guerard, Lillian Nayder, Mark D. Larabee, Fredric Jameson, F. R. Leavis, and John G. Peters are among the contributors. A chronology of Conrad’s life and work and a selected bibliography are also included.

Download or read book The Shadow-line written by Joseph Conrad and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2003 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in 1915, The Shadow-Line is based upon events and experiences from twenty-seven years earlier to which Conrad returned obsessively in his fiction. A young sea captain's first command brings with it a succession of crises: his sea is becalmed, the crew laid low by fever, and his deranged first mate is convinced that the ship is haunted by the malignant spirit of a previous captain. This is indeed a work full of "sudden passions", in which Conrad is able to show how the full intensity of existence can be experienced by the man who, in the words of the older Captain Giles, is prepared to "stand up to his bad luck, to his mistakes, to his conscience." A subtle and penetrating analysis of the nature of manhood, The Shadow-Line investigates varieties of masculinity and desire in a subtext that counters the tale's seemingly conventional surface.
