Book excerpt: Ask any Baby Boomer and they will tell you they were 'the best years of our lives!' Despite the Cold War, the Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Korea and Vietnam and, oh, a ferociously funny mother, the late 1940's, 50's and early 60's were Boomer Halcyon Days. Baby Boomer, Tales of a 'Boomer' Childhood at the Arse End of the World, is an Australian Baby Boomer story that will delight in its memories of long summer days, and personal freedom that people today can only dream about. Boomer youngsters were able to run and play without supervision almost anywhere with no concerns other than playing and enjoying friends and family. It also honours parents and a simpler time and highlights those awkward, growing and changing years. Self deprecating, Gerard Thompson is journalist who grew up in Hobart, Tasmania, at the bottom of Australia. Today, he recalls those memories from more tropical climes - South East Queensland. If you are a Baby Boomer, you will love the memories this read will reignite. If you are from another generation, it will tell you about a precious time in our modern evolution. You will love this light hearted, funny read about one Baby Boomer's unusual story.

Our memories of these events might bring smiles, or anger, or even a desire to forget. But every one of them helps to make us who we are today-and in some ways, who we will become tomorrow. Join Eric Mondschein at the unhurried pace of a cup of coffee for a surprising and powerful journey in which laughter inevitably mingles with tears, sorrow turns to joy, and loss almost becomes bearable.

Be prepared to chuckle, to sigh, to reflect-it is a worthy read." -Maridell Fryar, legendary Texas educator "Broxson did two things right: quitting law school and marrying Zoe. Everything else is questionable." -F. William Threadgill, noted raconteur "I enjoyed this memoir so much. Sometimes I laughed until I cried, and then other times I cried until I smiled. Some of the characters I knew, others I heard about, and others I met for the first time. I couldn't put it down." -Carol Trahan, legendary California educator

Did you grow up in the 1950s and were you a teenager in the swinging sixties? If the Festival of Britain, food rationing and the Queen's coronation are among your earliest memories then you belong to the post-war baby boomer generation. How did we end up here, in the second decade of the twenty-first century, when it all just seems like yesterday? In this fascinating new trip down memory lane, Paul Feeney remembers what it has been like to live through the eventful second half of the twentieth century. This nostalgic journey through an era of change will resonate with anyone who began their innocent childhood years in austerity and has lived through a lifetime of ground-breaking events to the much changed Britain of today. There are also some wonderful pictures to help jog our memories of bygone days.

Book excerpt: In Autobiography of a Baby Boomer you’ll follow the journey of a post-modernist baby-boomer from Father Knows Best middle class Fair Lawn, New Jersey to the hippy trail through Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The overland journey in search of something more than he could find at Cornell University Medical College covers four years during a time when “dropping out,” “turning on,” and “free-love” were the gospel. Through his travels, drugs, séances, very far-out “Road People,” and his parents’ unremitting love, author Robert Schultz comes to truly appreciate the American way of life. In an admittedly unconventional way, Schultz discovers the rather conventional joy of having a family and the awesome responsibility that comes with it.

Book excerpt: As I was preparing this work, I asked some young adults (early 20s of today) what they know about the baby boomers. One reply was, "You had morals. Today, people don't." Another reply was, "My grandmother is one, and she worries a lot." Then he qualified his statement with this idea, "No, she really takes good care of us." Thus, he was implying that the baby boomers are very humanitarian. Naturally, each of these statements is a value judgment and is open to opinion, and everyone knows that every generation has good and bad people. However, I would qualify the statement that the first young man said with this idea: I do believe that the baby boom generation has been a generation of traditional values in a very special way that no others in modern times seem to have been. Another way to say that is to say that baby boomers followed their parents' values in a way that no other generation of modern times has done.

Book excerpt: This book of verse is about the shared experiences and observations of the baby boomers. You come into this world and suddenly, or what seems like suddenly - forty, fifty, sixty years later, you find yourself trying to figure out what makes you think and feel the way you do. This book is my way of connecting some of the dots - NASA, Johnny Carson, Crayons, War, Love, Dylan, Trigonometry, Veterans, Soap Operas, Orlando, Beatles, and more than a handful of pieces about automobiles and the environment. You may find yourself remembering what you are happy to recall, and perhaps recalling what you were hoping to forget. Some pieces are therapeutic, others humorous, some sad, a number opinionated, but I hope you will find them all meaningful - worth keeping around and taking a look at now and then. This book may tie a few loose threads together for you, and loosen a few others. So it is with memories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relation between democracy and industrialization in United States history. Over the course of the 1930s, the political center almost disappeared as the Democratic New Deal became the litmus test of class, with blue collar workers providing its bedrock of support while white collar workers and those in the upper-income levels opposed it. By 1948 the class cleavage in American politics was as pronounced as in many of the Western European countries-such as France, Italy, Germany, or Britain-with which we usually associate class politics. Working people created a new America in the 1930s and 1940s which was a fundamental departure from the feudalistic and hierarchical America that existed before. They won the political rights of American citizenship which had been previously denied them. They democratized labor-capital relations and gained more economic security than they had ever known. They obtained more economic opportunity for them and their children than they had ever known and they created a respect for ethnic workers, which had not previously existed. In the process, class politics re-defined the political agenda of America as-for the first time in American history-the political universe polarized along class lines. Eric Leif Davin explores the meaning of the New Deal political mobilization by ordinary people by examining the changes it brought to the local, county, and state levels in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and Pennsylvania as a whole.
