Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mothers, wives, concubines, entertainers, attendants, officials, maids, drudges. By offering the first comparative view of the women who lived, worked, and served in royal courts around the globe, this work opens a new perspective on the monarchies that have dominated much of human history. Written by leading historians, anthropologists, and archeologists, these lively essays take us from Mayan states to twentieth-century Benin in Nigeria, to the palace of Japanese Shoguns, the Chinese Imperial courts, eighteenth-century Versailles, Mughal India, and beyond. Together they investigate how women's roles differed, how their roles changed over time, and how their histories can illuminate the structures of power and societies in which they lived. This work also furthers our understanding of how royal courts, created to project the authority of male rulers, maintained themselves through the reproductive and productive powers of women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the enormous work on diasporas relating to Africa, the majority of this work focuses on trade diasporas located in West African groups, only mentioning the pre-colonial period in passing. Therefore, there is a need to redirect research on diasporas from within Africa to include non-economic diasporas during this time period. Diasporas and Ethnic Identity in Africa: The Edo ne Ekue among the Northeast Yoruba, 1485–1995 fills a gap by discussing the existence of diasporas in pre-colonial Africa that have been neglected by African scholars. Using the Edo ne Ekue as a case study, Uyilawa Usuanlele examines Edo people by shedding light on their political institutions, trading networks, and associations as autonomous and distinct within the Benin Kingdom. This book also discusses how the Edo ne Ekue simultaneously linked their institutions with the royal court of the Benin Kingdom at the expense of the local rulers of their host communities. Throughout this study, Usuanlele provides a better understanding of ethnic identity, state by state relations and their members outside their territorial boundaries to discover the dynamics of political, economic, and social changes within and between communities during and after pre-colonial times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the twenty-first century begins, tens of millions of people participate in devotions to the spirits called Òrìsà. This book explores the emergence of Òrìsà devotion as a world religion, one of the most remarkable and compelling developments in the history of the human religious quest. Originating among the Yorùbá people of West Africa, the varied traditions that comprise Òrìsà devotion are today found in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Australia. The African spirit proved remarkably resilient in the face of the transatlantic slave trade, inspiring the perseverance of African religion wherever its adherents settled in the New World. Among the most significant manifestations of this spirit, Yorùbá religious culture persisted, adapted, and even flourished in the Americas, especially in Brazil and Cuba, where it thrives as Candomblé and Lukumi/Santería, respectively. After the end of slavery in the Americas, the free migrations of Latin American and African practitioners has further spread the religion to places like New York City and Miami. Thousands of African Americans have turned to the religion of their ancestors, as have many other spiritual seekers who are not themselves of African descent. Ifá divination in Nigeria, Candomblé funerary chants in Brazil, the role of music in Yorùbá revivalism in the United States, gender and representational authority in Yorùbá religious culture--these are among the many subjects discussed here by experts from around the world. Approaching Òrìsà devotion from diverse vantage points, their collective effort makes this one of the most authoritative texts on Yorùbá religion and a groundbreaking book that heralds this rich, complex, and variegated tradition as one of the world's great religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of an Enigma is an engaging read about an interesting and memorable life lived under uniquely challenging surroundings and times. The book is also an anthropological, sociological, and religious inquiry into the cultures and traditions of John Okogun Omovuon’s Edo and Delta States of Nigeria covering his lifetime, 1905 -1993 with special reference to the Esan(Edo) people. Educators, students, and researchers should find the book useful in the area of British colonialism and African culture, Nigeria history, Christianity in Africa, African spiritualism and African indigenous studies. A number of stranger than fiction events and encounters that uphold faith, courage, and integrity woven into free enterprise are described using materials from Okogun’s verbal and written accounts, information obtained by the author from Okogun’s contemporaries, and the author’s experience of life in the communities. The dance culture of the people including the famous Esan acrobatic dance (YouTube) Igbabonalimin is described in detail for the first time in the narrative. The author’s professional international experience as a natural products chemist is brought to bear on many aspects of the story including the herbalism practised by his father Okogun. Okogun lived a heroic life and his story needs to be told and read.

Book excerpt: This book explores the roles of contemporary urban shrines and their visual traditions in Benin City. It focuses on the charismatic priests and priestesses who are possessed by a pantheon of deities, the communities of devotees, and the artists who make artifacts for their shrines. The visual arts are part of a wider configuration of practices that include song, dance, possession and healing. These practices provide the means for exploring the relationships of the visual to both the verbal and performance arts that feature at these shrines. The analysis in this book raises fundamental questions about how the art of Benin, and non-Western art histories more generally, are understood. The book throws critical light on the taken-for-granted assumptions which underpin current interpretations and presents an original and revisionist account of Benin art history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kingdom of Benin, which started out as a small community and grew to be a vast empire, was particularly known for its expert farming practices, building skills, and artistic abilities. Within a few centuries, the Kingdom of Benin had grown into a dominant force in the region. Contact with Portugal led to economic and military cooperation and an even wealthier and more expansive empire. Eventually, however, it also helped facilitate the slave trade and planted the seeds of Benin's eventual destruction. Today's students are woefully unaware of the political, economic, and artistic glory that was Benin. That is corrected here and done so in lavish full-color, with abundant use of enthralling photographs, artifacts, maps, illustrations, and primary source materials. This text supports Common Core's mandate regarding analyzing the relationship between primary and secondary sources, citing evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources, and determining the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source.
