The data acquired was obtained from educators in two high schools located in the southeastern part of the United States using the Equal Opportunity Schools Staff Survey. Findings from this research are discussed in relation to the definition, function, and characteristics of an inviting school environment. Uncovered attitudes and perceptions were analyzed and then categorized according to the four defined functioning levels of Invitational Education Theory. This assessment helped to determine the learning environment created and maintained for students and provide information targeting the school environment possibly impacting African American students' participating in AP coursework. This study seeks to contribute to the existing research regarding the disparities in enrollment existing between African American students and their White peers in Advanced Placement℗ʼ coursework offerings in the high school setting.

Department of Educational Leadership, July 2022. The ongoing underrepresentation of African American (AA) students in Advanced Placement (AP) courses is a well-documented phenomenon. In order to provide a meaningful contribution to this area of research, the focus of practice was studied within the unique context of a North Carolina high school containing a majority African American student population and a large (26) number of face-to-face AP course offerings. The purpose of this case study was to analyze the effects of support and recruitment strategies designed and implemented by a Community of Practice (CoP) within the school while examining the following: the effect of race on African American students' educational experiences and enrollment decisions and the effect school personnel have on African American students' enrollment decisions. Critical Race Theory (CRT) was the conceptual framework that guided this focus of practice as CRT has been proven as a powerful explanatory tool in acknowledging the sustained inequity experienced by minority groups and may be used to understand, resist, and overcome educational barriers for marginalized student populations (Parker et al., 1999). Findings of this study support that schools intentionally utilizing a race-conscience approach in their recruitment and recommendation practices and creating systems of student support can have a positive effect on African American AP enrollment. The practice and research implications for educational practitioners have the ability to foster positive social change and reduce ongoing, racial disparities within AP classrooms.

The College Board and school districts need to continue to study strategies to help close this opportunity gap. To what extent is the College Board working to expand the AP program in private schools to serve more underrepresented students? What impact does the growth of the Advanced Placement program have on teaching and learning according to educators? What have been the challenges in terms of efficacy and access of the Advanced Placement program and what strategies have been implemented to overcome them according to educators?This mixed method study utilized both quantitative and qualitative data to understand the impact open access of the Advanced Placement program has had on teaching and learning. The researcher examined quantitative findings from a Google Form survey sent to AP teachers at five private high schools on Long Island, as well as College Board AP participation and performance data from New York State. The qualitative findings from this research were collected through one-on-one, semi-structured interviews through a video conferencing platform. Additionally, College Board publications related to equity and access were examined.Quantitative findings from the research study were significant and can be used to support the growth of the Advanced Placement program in schools. The study's findings have implications for policy-makers, administrators, and teachers. Initiatives for Advanced Placement equity and access should continue to reach underrepresented students. Additionally, open-access of the AP program is beneficial for success for all students and should be encouraged. Teachers should continue to gain support through professional development and digital resources from the College Board. A recommendation for future research is to include classroom observations in the qualitative portion of the study. Including classroom observations in the qualitative portion of the study could yield further results about classroom strategies that are successful for AP courses.

This qualitative study investigated how teachers and guidance counselors contribute to the academic success of African-American students of high potential at a large suburban high school in the city of Cleveland. The purpose was to improve the participation and performance of these students in AP courses. Data indicates that (a) school employees (teachers and guidance counselors) can positively affect achievement, (b) their definitions of success shape these students' opportunities for achievement, and (c) developing the capacities of high-potential students necessitates supported access to a challenging curriculum. The College Board's report: Equity 2000: A Systemic Education Form Model stressed that although minority students who complete higher level math courses actually enroll in college at the same rate as their non-minority peers, a concern is that the minority students, especially African-American students, often have had a less demanding and relevant curricula. African-American students are not enrolled in or do not participate in a rigorous curriculum to the degree that non-minority students are participating. I collected data using observations, interviews, and focus groups. I targeted a large suburban high school that offered nineteen advanced placement courses, and one that had a reputation of effectiveness in supporting the academic success of African-American students. I determined why advanced placement courses were not a part of the curriculum design for these students and how to increase their enrollment in the courses.

Over the past two decades, AP's emergence as a nationally recognized program of academic excellence has led to its rapid growth in the nation's schools. With growth have come challenges: How can the high quality of AP be maintained during a period of rapid growth? How can the existing educational inequities in student access to high-quality AP opportunities be diminished? In the 1999-2000 school year, only 57 percent of the nation's schools offered AP courses. Growth must include expansion of AP opportunities to those who have previously been denied them. Students should have access to AP no matter which school they attend. To directly confront the challenges that accompany the growth of AP, the Board of Trustees of the College Board established in 1999 the Commission on the Future of the Advanced Placement Program. During six meetings of the commission in 1999 and 2000, the dual challenges of providing equitable access to AP and maintaining the high quality of AP as the Program grows dominated the commission's discussions and became the central themes for this report and its recommendations. Book excerpt: This mixed methods study of teachers'beliefs about Advanced Placement (AP) equity and access policies occurred in Sunshine County School District, a large south Florida school district that has received accolades for leading the nation in access and equity in AP. Drawing on social reconstructionism, this study framed AP as an acceleration mechanism with the potential to increase students'prospects for social advancement. These policies have resulted in a more diverse classroom experience through nontraditional student participation in AP courses. The purpose of this embedded case study was to examine the relationship between beliefs held by AP teachers in regard to the implementation of equity and access policies, as well as to what extent these beliefs may support or hinder the execution of such policies and procedures. The study occurred in three phases and consisted of document analysis, a survey, and interviews. Surveys collected from 176 AP teachers in the district yielded quantitative data on AP teachers' beliefs regarding equity and access and the subsequent implementation of equity and access policies. Qualitative data regarding beliefs surrounding equity and access policies and the potential challenges these policies may pose were collected through open-ended survey questions, document analysis, and interviews with eight teachers at two selected high schools representing the highest and the lowest access rates to AP in the district. The findings indicated that AP teachers support equity and access policies in AP. Despite these beliefs, there is evidence that such policies are not implemented consistently across schools and particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related content areas. The analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data led to the conclusion that the historic tension between elitism and equity that surrounds the AP program currently is fueled primarily through state accountability measures. Implications and suggestions for future research are related to policy changes regarding the revision of the state of Florida grading system and district-level procedural changes in relation to the design of school-based professional development and development of clear AP pathways that support access among underrepresented students.

The study sought to answer the four questions. What are the most effective school practices to engage students of color for the AP program? In what ways does the recruitment of students of color affect access equity in the AP program for students of color? Does the recruitment of students of color have a bearing on the overall enrollment for the AP program? What does the action research team learn as they work collaboratively to positively impact the access equity in the AP program for students of color? The results indicate school practices that include analysis of program and student achievement data, strategic identification and recruitment for students of color, increased teacher awareness of the issue and parent notification of a child's potential, have a positive impact on the access equity for the AP program. Additionally, results indicate that action research shows promise as a practical approach for providing access equity in the AP program and potentially other areas of student achievement.
