Uno de los causantes de tan tremenda revolución ha sido la integración de los controles numéricos en los procesos de fabricación, sistemas capaces de controlar el entorno de la máquina, la propia fabricación y el estado de cada uno de los ejes que intervienen en la fabricación. En este texto se tratará de dar una reseña sobre las mejoras que el control numérico ha ido sufriendo con el paso de los años, las maquinas herramientas en las que habitualmente se suele integrar este tipo de controles y, lo más importante, cómo programar dichos controles para que ejecuten las funciones necesarias. Además se añade un capítulo muy extenso con ejercicios resueltos para que sirvan de ayuda al programador.

El tratamiento de los sistemas de coordenadas y las diferentes estructuras de programación, así como los capítulos de información general del control numérico, sirven de forma genérica para todos los sistemas. Los apartados de programación están basados en la estructura de los controles anteriormente mencionados, pero como es bien sabido, todos los controles tienen estructuras comunes en su forma básica, por lo que puede ser válido todo lo aquí expuesto como estructura general. El aprendizaje general de la programación se realiza sobre la base del control 8025, que es prácticamente idéntica a la programación del 8055, con las pocas diferencias expuestas en el apéndice que hace referencia a las mismas, por lo que es perfectamente adecuado para el aprendizaje de los dos controles. La programación sigue una estructura didáctica de fácil comprensión para el lector, creciendo de forma incremental la dificultad del aprendizaje y no siguiendo una estructura numérica de las diferentes ordenes de programación, lo que le da una estructura de curso práctico. Las ordenes de programación están compuestas de los siguientes apartados: Descripción, Formato, Parámetros, Operativa, Ejemplo, Programa y Comentario al ejemplo. Todas las ordenes estudiadas contienen ejemplos perfectamente detallados y comentados línea a línea.
