Book excerpt: The goal of a blind adaptive equalizer in digital communications is to compensate for the effects of intersymbol interference (ISI) without knowledge of the channel or the intended signal. Instead, only the statistics of the signal constellation are used. The constant modulus algorithm (CMA) is the most popular blind adaptive equalization algorithm used today because of its relative simplicity and effectiveness in equalizing constant-modulus signals. Although CMA does offer some equalization of non-constant modulus signals, such as quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), it can suffer from slower convergence and higher residual ISI when considering such two-dimensional signal constellations. In this dissertation, the well-known constant-modulus algorithm (CMA) and its shortcomings when applied to QAM signals are discussed and illustrated. Then some algorithms designed to improve the performance of CMA are discussed, specifically the alphabet-matched algorithm (AMA) and the multimodulus algorithm (MMA). The use of algorithms such as AMA and MMA is intended to make a CMA-based blind adaptive equalization algorithm better suited for the equalization of QAM signals, as they, unlike CMA, consider both the amplitude and the phase of the equalizer output. Using AMA, a combined CMA+AMA cost function technique and a block decision feedback equalization (DFE) scheme are proposed, which allow for compensation of a number of the shortcomings of CMA only equalization and improve equalizer performance while adding only minimal complexity. The improvements in equalizer performance are shown through performance evaluation via simulation. It will be shown that the proposed algorithms provide faster, and sometimes more accurate, convergence, reduces residual ISI and/or increases final accuracy. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: This study deals with an adaptive strategy for the equalization of pulse-amplitude-modulated signals in the presence of intersymbol interference and additive note. The successive overrelaxation iterative technique is used as the algorithm for the iterative adjustment of the equalizer coefficients during a training period for the minimization of the mean square error. With 2-cyclic and non-negative Jacobi matrices substantial improvement was demonstrated in the rate of convergence over the commonly used gradient techniques. The Jacobi theorems were also extended to non-positive Jacobi matrices. Numerical examples strongly indicate that the improvements obtained for the special cases are possible for general channel characteristics. The technique was analytically demonstrated to decrease the mean square error (norm) at each iteration for a large range of parameter values for light or moderate intersymbol interference and for small intervals for general channels. Again, numerical examples indicate that the norm-decreasing property is valid for a much larger parameter range for all types of intersymbol interference. Analytically, convergence of the relaxation algorithm was proven in a noisy environment and the coefficient variance was demonstrated to be bounded. Numerical simulations conducted indicate that the relaxation algorithm consistently converged much faster than the gradient techniques; hence, it requires much less time in the training period than do the gradients.

It discusses MC when the ISI is known at both transmitter and receiver, and when only the receiver knows the ISI. It showcases polynomial antiquity resistant modulated coding, and provides an examination of transmitter-assisted ISI equalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coding and detection techniques for one-dimensional (1-D) intersymbol interference (ISI) channels, particularly magnetic and optical recording channels, have been studied extensively for almost three decades. On the modulation coding side, the state-splitting algorithm has been developed to design efficient systematic modulation codes. On the detection side, Viterbi detector and decision-feedback equalization (DFE) have been well-understood. Two-dimensional (2-D) holographic data storage, has been developed to store the information page-wise instead of on 1-D tracks. This will signifficantly increase the storage density and read/write access of the information. However, most of the modulation coding and detection techniques for 1-D recording systems are unusable for 2-D holographic data storage. In this work, we present various methods for modelling and equalizing 2-D ISI channels. Some low complexity detectors, such as a threshold detector, have been proposed for certain 2-D ISI channels. One of the main problems of the holographic data storage is the misalignment between written and sampled data pages. This problem is addressed by using more detector pixels than data points, which is called oversampling. We also attempted to characterize the distance properties of certain 2-D ISI channels. An algorithm for finding error events is developed for any 2-D ISI channel. Unlike the 1-D constrained systems, the capacity of most 2-D constrained systems is not analytically known due to the lack of graph-based descriptions of such channels. This also complicates the design of efficient modulation codes. We propose algorithms for finding single-state and finite-state block codes for the hard-square constraint. The encoding and decoding of the modulation codes can be performed easily using codeword generating templates. We also propose an algorithm for finding single-state block codes for any 2-D constrained system represented by a set of forbidden patterns. For 1-D recording, we designed block codes satisfying the running digital sum (RDS) and time-varying maximum transition run (TMTR) constraints for perpendicular recording channels. The graphs of these constraints are combined to understand the design trade-off between the achievable coding rate and constraint parameters. The spectra of the combined constraints shows the properties of the constituent constraints. The modulations codes are designed by searching for all codewords satisfying certain constraint properties.

During the same time, signal processing techniques have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This trend will continue as many new signal processing applications are opening up in consumer products and communications systems. In particular, signal processing has been making increasingly sophisticated use of linear algebra on both theoretical and algorithmic fronts. This volume gives particular emphasis to exposing broader contexts of the signal processing problems so that the impact of algorithms and hardware can be better understood; it brings together the writings of signal processing engineers, computer engineers, and applied linear algebraists in an exchange of problems, theories, and techniques. This volume will be of interest to both applied mathematicians and engineers.

Book excerpt: The most thorough, up-to-date reference on channel equalization—from basic concepts to complex modeling techniques In today's instant-access society, a high premium is placed on information that can be stored and communicated effectively. As a result, storage densities and communications rates are being pushed to capacity, causing information symbols to interfere with one another. To help unclog pathways for the clearer conveyance of information, this book offers in-depth discussion of the significant contributions and future adaptability of channel equalization and a set of approaches for solving the problem of intersymbol interference (ISI). Chapter explorations in Channel Equalization include: Channel equalization topics presented with incremental learning methodology—from the very fundamental concept to more advanced mathematical knowledge Coverage of technology used in second-, third- and fourth-generation cellular communication systems A set of homework problems that reinforce concepts discussed in the book Tutorial explanations of recent developments currently captured in IEEE technical journals Unlike existing digital communications books that devote cursory attention to channel equalization, this invaluable guide addresses a crucial need by focusing solely on the background, current state, and future direction of this increasingly important technology. A unique mix of basic concepts and complex frameworks for delivering digitized data make Channel Equalization a valuable reference for all practicing wireless communication engineers and students dealing with the pressing demands of the information age.
