Italians realized but late that, even though Latin was still considered the literary language of the country lying between the Alps and the sea, there was room for a new literary language that should share with it the field of science and literature, with claims not inferior to those which French or Provencal could urge in France. The spoken language of Italy, the vernacular, during the ten centuries that separate Augustus from King Arduin, had diverged more and more from the recognized language of science and art, literary Latin; and, while learned writers laboured for a couple of centuries longer under the delusion that they were full heirs to the perfect craftsmanship of Cicero and Horace, the distinction between the vernacular (volgare) and the literary language (lingua di grammatica) was becoming evident to all. Nor, under the improving social conditions, was it possible to debar from all literary enjoyment those who were ignorant of Latin, any more than it was practicable for judges to continue the use of Latin in the courts, when those who appeared before them understood nothing but the vernacular. The peoples of France and Spain, being farther removed from Rome, were faced by difficulties similar but less formidable. Among them Roman tradition was less active. Few, if any, of the inhabitants of Gaul or Iberia regarded themselves as the descendants of the Romans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Italian Literature: 1265-1907 It will thus be seen that this series is not confined to any one branch of literature, but represents all in fair proportion. With a lucid history of Italy's literature for the opening volume, the other fifteen fall naturally into three sections: first, Poetry, the Drama, and Belles lettres; second, Essays, Memoirs, and Historical Ro mance; and third, Fiction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Italian Literature I think, says jowett, writing to John Addington Symonds (august 4, that you are happy in having unlocked so much of Italian literature, certainly the greatest in the world after Greek, Latin, English. To have interpreted one such literature and made it accessible to English-speaking people seems to me a sufficient result of a life. It seems, however, peculiarly appropriate that a history of Italian literature should follow and should precede other and parallel histories. Symonds himself had long before pointed out that no man, at least in a single work of moderate compass, can fully deserve the credit of having unlocked Italian literature. The study of Italian letters, he had reminded us, cannot be profitably pursued by itself. The literature of Italy requires to be constantly considered in connection with other litera tures, both those from which it is itself derived, and those which it has deeply influenced. It is more inti mately affiliated to antiquity than any other European literature, and may indeed be regarded as a continuation or revival of the Latin. Its advent was long and uh accountably delayed - it is the youngest of all the chief European literatures; but when at length it did appear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Italian Literature In introducing this work it is scarcely necessary to do more than specify one or two of the sources from which information has been gleaned. Such are the lectures of Paolo Emiliani-Giudici, which I have found interesting and instructive, though very discursive; and there is an exquisite little work (one of Hoepli's manuals) by Cesare Fenini, which gives an admirable resume of the whole subject. Somewhat more practical is Raffaello Fornaciari's Disegno storico della Letteratura italiana. The generous help and kindly criticism of Mr. F. York Powell call also for grateful acknowledgement. This Primer does not profess to present a complete account of Italian Literature, and it would be idle to expect unanimous approval of the names inserted or of those which have been left out. This is, however, only an elementary work, and it will be easy to supply inevitable deficiencies from more ambitious volumes. The book will have fulfilled its object, if it prove serviceable to those for whom it is primarily designed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Italian Literature BY the end of the sixteenth century the great literary and artistic movement of the Renaissance had spent itself in Italy, and with it the interest of the few people who still care for Italian literature in this country usually comes to an abrupt end. But if Agamemnon was not the first of the world's heroes, neither Dante, nor even Tasso, was the last of Italy's poets. It is true that she ceased to lead the way in literature. Her best energies were absorbed in other directions. But during the eighteenth century there was a steady revival. Literature became more and more modern and drew closer and closer to life as national feeling developed. This was thoroughly awakened by the French Revolution and finally took definite shape with the restoration of Bourbon and Austrian rule in the peninsula. From that time national unity and independence became the ideal of all that was best in the country, and the artists and men of letters were among the most enthusiastic supporters of the cause. Hitherto the literary revival, which went hand in hand with the national revival, has had no share in the interest that the romantic story of the Risorgimento has recently aroused in England. It is true that in the period with which we are concerned Italian literature did not influence our own, but, on the other hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Characters: In the Epoch of Unification If it is true that the uniting of Italy was achieved by the union of Italians, it is no less true that it will be only destroyed in the event that the nation forgets the existence of something superior to faction, something more sacred than party. It is for the young generation to learn this lesson that it may hand down intact the heritage acquired at so great a cost by those who died and suffered. Comte used to say that it was the dead who governed the living. My best wish for Italy is that she may be governed by her heroic dead. To the young, with whom lies the future, I dedicate my book, which whatever are its shortcomings, was written come amore spira a love not new, that will last while I live. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italians of to-Day The cordial reception given by the Press and the reading public generally to My Italian Year leads me to believe that some further description of Italian life may not, perhaps, be unwelcome even to the perusers of that volume, and also, possibly, to that larger British public which is not always in a position to provide itself with books of the kind. It is, indeed, to this larger public that I dedicate the following pages, and this not for the sake of popularity hunting, but from an earnest desire to add to my many efforts to contribute to a better and more intimate understanding of modern Italy and her people than at present obtains among the mass of my compatriots. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Italian Literature Indeed, it is scarcely far-fetched to say tha Greece was avenged for her slavery by the not less complete slavery of Rome to her intellectual supremacy. The Roman poets, dazzled by the brilliancy of their Athenian prototypes, fancied that only by imitating, could they hope to excel. A more unfortunate idea never took possession of a nation. It destroyed everything in their writings that was spontaneous and redolent of their native soil. Whatever is really endowed with life and intrinsic value in their works, has had to struggle into existence through the suffocating atmosphere of foreign fashions and foreign trains of thought. This evil was apparent in other branches of litera ture, but it was very far from injuring them as it injured poetry. Virgil was assuredly one of the greatest poets that ever lived, and yet how much of his poetry is second-hand, or, at best, adapted from others. The adaptations are Often executed with marvellous skill, but this fact only enhances our regret that he should have made Of his Eneid but an echo of Homer; and of his Eclogms but a repetition of Theocritus. His Georgia, indeed, escaped being only a decoction from Greek herbs, because in them he wrote of what he had actually seen and experienced, and they are, in truth, his masterpiece. Indeed, if we deduct the extraordi nary beauty Oi the style, which is above praise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Idea in Italian Literature "The National Idea in Italian Literature" was the title of the inaugural lecture delivered in the University of Manchester, on November 6th, 1919, at the opening of the newly-founded department of Italian Studies. In the following pages the lecture has been somewhat expanded and, here and there, modified. It remains, however, substantially the same. I would ask my readers to take it still as no more than a prolusione, and to let this explain, if not excuse, the omission of many names, especially in the nineteenth century, which could not have been passed over in any fuller treatment of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forerunners of Dante: A Selection From Italian Poetry Before 1300 Italy is unique among European countries in having twice seen its literature culminate, at epochs, indeed, far remote one from the other; and each time in a poet who by common consent holds rank among the four or five greatest among men of European speech. The older Italian, which we call Latin, and the later Latin, which we call Italian, must not be regarded as parent and child; they are the same individual at various stages of development, as Dante was well aware. Throughout the treatise on language and literature to which he gave the name of De Vulgari Eloque'rztz'éz, the word he uses to designate his own mother-tongue is Latino. The three chief 'romance' languages, as we now style them, are for him French, 'spanish' (including Provencal), and 'latin'; the vernacular of Italy is vzzégm'e latz'num. His instinct was quite right; he would have understood Virgil, in all probability, though he had never read another word of ancient Latin, while Virgil would have understood him, and recognized in his speech something very closely resembling what he had heard every day in the streets of Rome, or the country lanes round Mantua.
