Book Synopsis Status Epilepticus by : Claude G. Wasterlain
Download or read book Status Epilepticus written by Claude G. Wasterlain and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of recent advances in the most severe form of epilepsy, focusing on two areas in which progress has been most rapid: basic mechanisms and treatment. Interest in status epilepticus--the most extreme form of epilepsy, involving continuous seizures--has surged in the last 20 years. Since 1979 there have been over 4,000 publications on the subject, including more than 1,700 in the last five years. No other text provides such a comprehensive review of the recent advances in the field of status epilepticus. The book focuses on the two areas in which progress has been most rapid: basic mechanisms and treatment. There is now a greater understanding of the mechanisms and complications of status epilepticus at the molecular level, which should eventually lead to improved therapy, and treatment strategies today have a greater sense of urgency because of the realization that neuronal apoptosis and necrosis can be triggered very quickly. After an overview of history, classification, and epidemiology, the contributors consider clinical phenomenology, biological markers, pathophysiology, brain damage, epileptogenesis, therapeutic principles, pharmacology, and therapeutic management. Their contributions are equally divided between studies of basic mechanisms in animal models and clinical studies, so that the reader can turn easily from the reductionist experiment that isolates a small component of status to the complex clinical situation in which these principles can translate into therapeutic action. The goal is to provide a scientific rationale for clinical decisions while developing therapeutic attitudes that are firmly grounded in pathophysiology.

Book Synopsis Inflammation and Epilepsy: New Vistas by : Damir Janigro
Download or read book Inflammation and Epilepsy: New Vistas written by Damir Janigro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive information, both for clinicians and scientists, on the basic mechanisms, clinical features, and therapeutic approaches to epilepsy as an inflammatory disease. Inflammation has been for many years considered as an etiologic player (and a therapeutic target) for a specific group of epilepsies. However, it turns out that this concept underestimated the impact of inflammation in seizure disorders. Many accepted therapies for non-inflammatory epilepsies act in part as an inflammatory drug. The CNS actively responds to acute immune challenges by altering body temperature, stimulating the HPA axis, as well as up- and down-regulating specific sympathetic pathways.
Book Synopsis Astrocytes and Epilepsy by : Jacqueline A. Hubbard
Download or read book Astrocytes and Epilepsy written by Jacqueline A. Hubbard and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epilepsy is a devastating group of neurological disorders characterized by periodic and unpredictable seizure activity in the brain. There is a critical need for new drugs and approaches given than at least one-third of all epilepsy patients are not made free of seizures by existing medications and become "medically refractory". Much of epilepsy research has focused on neuronal therapeutic targets, but current antiepileptic drugs often cause severe cognitive, developmental, and behavioral side effects. Recent findings indicate a critical contribution of astrocytes, star-shaped glial cells in the brain, to neuronal and network excitability and seizure activity. Furthermore, many important cellular and molecular changes occur in astrocytes in epileptic tissue in both humans and animal models of epilepsy. The goal of Astrocytes and Epilepsy is to comprehensively review exciting findings linking changes in astrocytes to functional changes responsible for epilepsy for the first time in book format. These insights into astrocyte contribution to seizure susceptibility indicate that astrocytes may represent an important new therapeutic target in the control of epilepsy. Astrocytes and Epilepsy includes background explanatory text on astrocyte morphology and physiology, epilepsy models and syndromes, and evidence from both human tissue studies and animal models linking functional changes in astrocytes to epilepsy. Beautifully labelled diagrams are presented and relevant figures from the literature are reproduced to elucidate key findings and concepts in this rapidly emerging field. Astrocytes and Epilepsy is written for neuroscientists, epilepsy researchers, astrocyte investigators as well as neurologists and other specialists caring for patients with epilepsy. - Presents the first comprehensive book to synthesize historical and recent research on astrocytes and epilepsy into one coherent volume - Provides a great resource on the field of astrocyte biology and astrocyte-neuron interactions - Details potential therapeutic targets, including chapters on gap junctions, water and potassium channels, glutamate and adenosine metabolism, and inflammation
Book Synopsis Pharmacoresistance in Epilepsy by : Luisa Rocha
Download or read book Pharmacoresistance in Epilepsy written by Luisa Rocha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although more than 10 new antiepileptic drugs have been developed in the past decade, epilepsy remains resistant to drug therapy in about one third of patients, many of whom struggle with the disease their entire lives. Managing these patients is a challenge and requires a structured multidisciplinary approach. The book includes chapters on all issues related to pharmacoresistance in epilepsy and describes recent developments in the pathogenesis and treatment of this disorder. It addresses abnormalities in inhibitory mechanisms, epilepsy-related changes to the immune system, development of pharmacoresistance caused by chronic exposure to antiepileptic drugs, and novel therapeutic strategies for preventing or slowing down the progression of the disease. Clinicians and basic scientists alike will find up-to-date information on the development of pharmacoesistance, as well as reviews of mechanisms associated with epilepsy that may help them consider novel strategies for preventing the development of pharmacoresistance in the first place. The book also features information on new therapeutic strategies for control of epilepsy, such as transcutaneous electrical stimulation and virtual screening of new antiepileptic drugs. Pharmacoresistance in Epilepsy: From Genes and Molecules to Promising Therapies is useful to anyone working in the field, whether they’re studying epilepsy in the lab or treating it in a doctor’s office.”

Book Synopsis Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging of the Brain, Head and Neck, and Spine by : Toshio Moritani
Download or read book Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging of the Brain, Head and Neck, and Spine written by Toshio Moritani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book, now in an updated and extended third edition, systematically covers the use of diffusion-weighted (DW) MR imaging in all major areas of neuroradiology, including imaging of the head and neck and the spine as well as the brain. The authors guide the reader from the basic principles of DW imaging through to the use of cutting-edge diffusion sequences such as diffusion tensor (DTI) and kurtosis (DKI), fiber tractography, high b value, intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM), neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), and oscillating gradient spin echo (OGSE). Pathology, pathophysiology, and patient management and treatment are all thoroughly discussed. Since the early descriptions by LeBihan and colleagues of the ability to image and measure the micromovement of water molecules in the brain, diffusion imaging and its derivatives have contributed ever more significantly to the evaluation of multiple disease processes. In comprehensively describing the state of the art in the field, this book will be of high value not only for those who deal routinely with neuro-MR imaging but also for readers who wish to establish a sound basis for understanding diffusion images in the hope of extending these principles into more exotic areas of neuroimaging.
Book Synopsis Refractory Status Epilepticus by : Xuefeng Wang
Download or read book Refractory Status Epilepticus written by Xuefeng Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to offer the accumulated fertile experience of treating drug-resistant epileptic patients collected over the past few decades, focusing on aspects of neurology, neurosurgery, emergency care, critical care medicine and basic medical research. Refractory status epilepticus is one of the most common severe and acute diseases in neurology and neurocritical care; it is also the main cause of death in epileptic patients. In the context of prevention and treatment processes, it is not only necessary to terminate epileptic seizures, but to also address the disruption of the patient’s internal environment and provide critical life support. Effective treatment calls for multi-disciplinary support from neurology, neurosurgery, emergency care, critical care medicine, and other fields. Further, since the clinical features of epileptic seizure are not specific, it is necessary to differentiate it from other diseases that produce convulsions, disorders of consciousness, syncope, mental and behavioral disorders, myoclonus, etc., to avoid misdiagnosis. In this book, it comprehensively and systematically describes the basic knowledge as well as prevention and treatment tips, providing an invaluable reference resource for medical students and professionals in neurology, neurosurgery, emergency care and critical care medicine.
Book Synopsis Pediatric Neuropsychiatry by : Aaron J. Hauptman
Download or read book Pediatric Neuropsychiatry written by Aaron J. Hauptman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adult neuropsychiatry is now a well-established field with numerous reputable references. Practitioners who work with children routinely note how references and practitioners knowledgeable in the equivalent work in the pediatric world are rare. Child psychiatrists and neurologists frequently work with individuals struggling with these conditions and would strongly benefit from such a reference that incorporates medical work-up, psychopharmacological recommendations, family/support recommendations and theoretical pathophysiology. Pediatricians and developmental pediatricians often treat children with behavioral and neuropsychiatric sequelae, but are not well-trained in the neuropsychiatric management of these cases. Neuropsychologists and educational psychologists working with children and adults with pediatric-onset conditions will also find the text helpful to contextualize their cases, better-understand the medical evaluation and management and perhaps adjust recommendations that would supplement their own testing methods. Finally, sub-specialists in adult neurology, psychiatry and neuropsychiatry often find themselves working with these children by default as there are few pediatric subspecialists who are available to accept them into practice. When facing complex neuropsychiatric illness in children, many clinicians are stymied because they may have “never seen a case like that”. This text fills the wide gap that currently exists and helps move this field forward. The approach utilized in adult neuropsychiatry that is both clear and accessible does not yet have an equivalent in the pediatric realm, but there is tremendous interest in its development. Children and adolescents with neuropsychiatric conditions are very common and they and their caregivers often struggle to find professionals well educated in this field. Ultimately, a wide range of clinicians will find this text to be a very helpful resource for diagnosis and management in the spectrum of pediatric neuropsychiatric conditions. The case-based approach is also unique with respect to neuropsychiatric approaches, and the clear cut, reader-friendly approach of such a format would likely be well-received among physicians looking for a resource on this issue.
