In the translation of Profes sor Effront's book I have been actuated by the desire to make available in English the valuable material contained in the original French edition. I have endeavored to reproduce the author's ideas with clearness and simplicity, without at the same time deviating too much from his own form of ex pression. I have made no additions or changes, and the book is therefore presented in a form as nearly as possible like that in which it came from the pen of the author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Chemistry of the Enzymes The name enzymes or unorganised ferments is given to animal or vegetable substances of unknown composition and constitution which, in the organism itself or even independently of the organ or cells in which they arise, are able to accelerate chemical reactions. The term enzyme is thus included in the much more general term, catalyst. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Restriction enzymes cleave DNA at specific recognition sites and have many uses in molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology. More than 4000 restriction enzymes are known today, of which more than 621 are commercially available, justifying their description by Nobel Prize winner Richard Roberts as "the workhorses of molecular biology." This book by Wil Loenen is the first full-length history of these invaluable tools, from their recognition in the 1950s to the flowering of their development in the 1970s and 1980s to their ubiquitous availability today. Loenen has worked with restriction enzymes throughout her career as a research scientist, during which she came to know many of the leaders in this field personally and professionally. She is the author of several authoritative and widely appreciated reviews of the enzymes' biology. Her book was written with the close assistance of several of the field's pioneers, including Rich Roberts, Stuart Linn, Tom Bickle, Steve Halford, and the late Joe Bertani. The seed for the book was sown at a retirement party for Noreen Murray, to whom the book is dedicated, and its roots lie in a remarkable 2013 conference at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory that celebrated the people and events that were vital to the field's development. Funding for the book was made possible by the Genentech Center for the History of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Method of Enzyme Action A theoretical treatment of a scientific subject can lead only to a working hypothesis, and it is from this point of view that the theory of the mode of action of enzymes given at the end of this book should be judged. Owing to the circumstances in which the following pages were written, I have had neither the time nor the opportunity to verify the hypothesis by experiment. It is my hope, however, that the conception of enzyme action given will prove sufficiently interesting to induce some worker to test it and either prove or disprove it. From either result something of value will, I hope, be learnt. The spinning of hypotheses without producing new facts to render them more plausible may seem a useless expenditure of energy, but it seems to me that if the subject has been carefully reviewed before the hypothesis is evolved in its final form - as I have tried to do in this book - at least two advantages arc gained. In the first place the facts have been looked at from a new angle, and this may result in the observation of new relationships; and in the second place a working hypothesis may be reached, and this is the necessary prelude of fruitful experimental work. '...The quality...is so great that there is no hesitation in recommending it as ideal reading for any student requiring an introduction to enzymes. ...Enzymes in Industry - should command a place in any library, industrial or academic, where it will be frequently used.' The Genetic Engineer and Biotechnologist 'Enzymes in Industry' is an excellent introduction into the field of applied enzymology for the reader who is not familiar with the subject. ... offers a broad overview of the use of enzymes in industrial applications. It is up-to-date and remarkable easy to read, despite the fact that almost 50 different authors contributed. The scientist involved in enzyme work should have this book in his or her library. But it will also be of great value to the marketing expert interested in the present use of enzymes and their future in food and nonfood applications.' Angewandte Chemie 'This book should be available to all of those working with, or aspiring to work with, enzymes. In particular academics should use this volume as a source book to ensure that their 'new' projects will not 'reinvent the wheel'.' Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology

Book excerpt: The first edition of this book covered the basic treatment of the enzyme reaction using the overall reaction kinetics and stopped-flow method, the general properties of protein and cofactors, the control of enzyme reaction, and the preparation of enzyme protein. These topics are the basis of enzyme research and thus suitable for the beginner in the field. The second edition presents the cofactors produced via the post-translational modification of the enzyme’s active site. These cofactors expand the function of enzymes and open a new research field. The carbonyl reagent phenylhydrazine and related compounds have been useful in finding some of the newly discovered cofactors and thus have been discussed in this edition. The topic of the control of enzyme activity through the channel of substrates and products in polyfunctional enzymes has also been expanded in this book.
