Book Synopsis Transforming Socio-Natures in Turkey by : Onur İnal
Download or read book Transforming Socio-Natures in Turkey written by Onur İnal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of the environmental makings and contested historical trajectories of environmental change in Turkey. Despite the recent proliferation of studies on the political economy of environmental change and urban transformation, until now there has not been a sufficiently complete treatment of Turkey's troubled environments, which live on the edge both geographically (between Europe and Middle East) and politically (between democracy and totalitarianism). The contributors to Transforming Socio-Natures in Turkey use the toolbox of environmental humanities to explore the main political, cultural and historical factors relating to the country’s socio-environmental problems. This leads not only to a better grounding of some of the historical and contemporary debates on the environment in Turkey, but also a deeper understanding of the multiplicity of framings around more-than-human interactions in the country in a time of authoritarian populism. This book will be of interest not only to students of Turkey from a variety of social science and humanities disciplines but also contribute to the larger debates on environmental change and developmentalism in the context of a global populist turn.

This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to describe and classify environmental non-governmental organizations in Turkey. In the data-gathering phase of the study, face to face interviews were conducted with the staff and heads of environmental non-governmental organizations, panels and meetings were attended. After reviewing alternative definitions and classifications of non-governmental organizations, the classification framework has been based on six main criteria: legal structures, objectives, action areas, orientations, geographic distributions, and relations with government. Furthermore, the study addresses the rapid growth of environmental non-governmental organizations in number and diversity, and explains the reasons of this increase as the changing policies of governments, the increase in international financial aids to the NGOs and the growing environmental problems between 1980 and 2000.
Book Synopsis Migration, Environment and Climate Change by : Frank Laczko
Download or read book Migration, Environment and Climate Change written by Frank Laczko and published by UN. This book was released on 2009 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gradual and sudden environmental changes are resulting in substantial human movement and displacement, and the scale of such flows, both internal and cross-border, is expected to rise with unprecedented impacts on lives and livelihoods. Despite the potential challenge, there has been a lack of strategic thinking about this policy area partly due to a lack of data and empirical research on this topic. Adequately planning for and managing environmentallyinduced migration will be critical for human security. The papers in this volume were first presented at the Research Workshop on Migration and the Environment: Developing a Global Research Agenda held in Munich, Germany in April 2008. One of the key objectives on the Munich workshop was to address the need for more sound empirical research and identify priority areas of research for policy makers in the field of migration and the environment.
Book Synopsis Animals and the Environment in Turkish Culture by : Kim Fortuny
Download or read book Animals and the Environment in Turkish Culture written by Kim Fortuny and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape and animals have been fundamental elements of Turkish culture from the Ottomans to the present day. This book examines representations of and attitudes toward land and animals in selected Turkish literary texts and cultural contexts. Informed by global debates in ecocriticism, ecopoetics and animal studies, Kim Fortuny explores literary and arts activism, as well as environmental interventions in the Turkish cultural sphere in light of ongoing ecological degradation in Turkey. Writers from the Turkish canon such as Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar and Nâzim Hikmet are explored alongside American and English texts to reveal common transnational environmental and ecological concerns across these distinct literary cultures. Analysing works of Turkish literature within the emerging field of ecocriticism, this interdisciplinary work will be of interest to scholars of Turkish and comparative literature and animal studies and ecocriticism across the humanities.

Book Synopsis Ecological Regions of North America by :
Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.

Book Synopsis Water Resources of Turkey by : Nilgun B. Harmancioglu
Download or read book Water Resources of Turkey written by Nilgun B. Harmancioglu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth description of water resources of Turkey, a country with a unique geographical location, extending from the Mediterranean in Europe to the Middle East. Its varying geography, topography, hydrology, geology and climate are reflected in the diverse characteristics of its water basins. Furthermore, due to its geographical location, Turkey has a significant number of transboundary river basins and has to share its water resources with its neighbors, an issue that can sometimes lead to water conflicts. Turkey is also an interesting example of a developing country that is attempting to adapt to universal water management strategies while at the same time facing legal, institutional, economic and capacity development problems. It has long remained a water-rich country, but the situation is now changing due to the increasing population, inefficient use of resources, and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation. This book is useful for national and international organizations as well as water resources professionals. It takes on an added significance in the light of climate change in the region, water management problems and transboundary water basins.
