Book excerpt: Pollution from cattle feedlots is a serious problem in certain areas of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. However, feedlots can be built and operated in a manner which will eliminate the majority of the pollution problems. These guidelines have been prepared to assist in bringing cattle feedlot operations into harmony with the environment. The guidelines are a general statement of location, design, and operation recommendations for individual feedlot operators,--Letter of Transmittal.
Book Synopsis Pollution Abatement from Cattle Feedlots in Northeastern Colorado and Nebraska by : Lynn K. Porter
Download or read book Pollution Abatement from Cattle Feedlots in Northeastern Colorado and Nebraska written by Lynn K. Porter and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climatic factors, feedlot runoff, and organic material in the runoff were evaluated in experimental and commercial feedlots. The effects of slope, stocking rates, terraces, basins, and holding ponds were evaluated to obtain best controls for containing runoff. The organic manure-soil interface severely restricts the movement of water, nitrates, organic substances, and air into the soil beneath feedlots. Management practices, such as good drainage, that enhance aeration will decrease the evolution of volatile compounds.

This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management Strategies for Sustainable Cattle Production in Southern Pastures is a practical resource for scientists, students, and stakeholders who want to understand the relationships between soil-plant interactions and pasture management strategies, and the resultant performance of cow-calf and stocker cattle. This book illustrates the importance of matching cattle breed types and plant hardiness zones to optimize cattle production from forages and pastures. It explains the biologic and economic implications of grazing management decisions made to improve sustainability of pastures and cattle production while being compliant with present and future environmental concerns and cattle welfare programs. Documents the effects of cattle grazing on greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprints Discusses strategies to enhance soil fertility, soil health, and nutrient cycling in pastures Provides information on the use of stocking rates, stocking strategies and grazing systems to optimize cow-calf production of weaned calves and stockers. Presents innovations in cattle supplementation and watering systems to minimize negative impacts on water and soil health Includes methods for weed control to maintain pasture condition and ecosystem stability Describes management strategies to integrate cattle operations with wildlife sustainability

Download or read book Pollution Implications of Animal Wastes -- written by Raymond C. Loehr and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the review is to present a forward oriented state-of-the-art view of pollution implications which must be faced with the ever increasing trend toward confinement feeding large numbers of livestock. The manure wastes from all varieties of livestock under feed in the United States are characterized and related both to human population equivalents and beef cattle equivalents. The potential environmental hazards which may result from improper handling, storage, and disposal of these wastes were discussed. The effectiveness and economics of various conventional wastes treatment and disposal methods as related to confinement feeding wastes were evaluated.

Download or read book Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations: Current Knowledge, Future Needs discusses the need for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement a new method for estimating the amount of ammonia, nitrous oxide, methane, and other pollutants emitted from livestock and poultry farms, and for determining how these emissions are dispersed in the atmosphere. The committee calls for the EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish a joint council to coordinate and oversee short - and long-term research to estimate emissions from animal feeding operations accurately and to develop mitigation strategies. Their recommendation was for the joint council to focus its efforts first on those pollutants that pose the greatest risk to the environment and public health.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Beef Cattle Feedlot Waste Management Alternatives by : A. F. Butchbaker
Download or read book Evaluation of Beef Cattle Feedlot Waste Management Alternatives written by A. F. Butchbaker and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative beef waste management systems were examined to determine minimum cost systems for effective waste disposal. Design and cost information was obtained from feedlot visits and the literature. A computer program was developed for use with a Conversational Programming System (CPS) for calculating the sizes of equipment and facilities and for estimating the facility and machinery operating and investment costs. For open feedlots, two waste management systems, solid and runoff-carried, were considered. Costs are given. Confinement buildings with slotted floors using slurry handling methods or with solid floors using solid handling methods offer a high potential for completely controlling the animal waste and abating pollution. A promising system for near optimum pollution control is a cable scraper system underneath a slotted floor for daily removal and disposal of the wastes. A manure irrigation is discussed.
