Book excerpt: This document contains the papers presented at the Consultation on Aquaculture for Sustainable Rural Development which was organized jointly by FAO and NACA and held in Chiang Rai, Thailand, from March 29-31,1999 in order to develop the detailed structure of a regional program on aquaculture for sustainable rural development and to propose a strategy for its implementation. The consultation took an overview of the relevant information emerging from the presentations of country reports; lessons learned by specific projects; experiences of regional and international organizations and donor agencies; and findings of expert reviews. More sharply focused examination of critical issues and discussions on specific components of the draft program concept were followed through parallel working group discussions. The outputs of the working groups were further discussed during the concluding plenary. Finally, a detailed Program Framework on Aquaculture for Sustainable Rural Livelihood Development was conceived through consensus to serve as guiding principles for the formation of the program.--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis An assessment of impacts from shrimp aquaculture in Bangladesh and prospects for improvement by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book An assessment of impacts from shrimp aquaculture in Bangladesh and prospects for improvement written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Total shrimp production in Bangladesh increased from 14 773 tonnes in 1986 to 128 313 ton in 2014. In parallel with contribution of the shrimp sector to the local and national economy of the country, it has caused some negative impacts on local ecosystems. This includes deterioration of soil and water quality, depletion of mangrove forest, decrease in population of local species of fish among others. There have also been some socio-economic consequences on the livelihood patterns of people livin g in coastal areas. At this stage, a paradigm shift is needed away from current shrimp farming practices to a more holistic and integrated approach that accounts for environmental integrity and social cohesion. In this paper, the ongoing measures to improve and streamline environmental performance of shrimp farming in Bangladesh are analyzed and a number of measures are proposed.

Download or read book Report of the Expert Consultation on the Assessment of Socio-economic Impacts of Aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Expert Consultation on the Assessment of Socio-economic Impacts of Aquaculture was held in Ankara, Turkey, from 4 to 8 February 2008. It identified the many positive and negative impacts of aquaculture with their far-reaching socio economic implications. While they agreed that multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework using analytical hierarchy process (AHP) as a measurement technique is a suitable method for assessing socio-economic impacts of aquaculture, experts recognized that other methods such as the costs benefits analysis (CBA) could also be used depending on circumstances. They recommended that case studies be carried out in a certain number of developed and developing countries on assessing the socio-economic impacts of aquaculture using AHP, CBA and another technique in order to test and compare the applicability and results of these methods. They also suggested developing a user guide on the implementation of these methods and build capacity in developing countries in using them, and identified other needs for future work in socio-economics of aquaculture.

Book Synopsis Aquatic Biodiversity II by : H. Segers
Download or read book Aquatic Biodiversity II written by H. Segers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater Biodiversity is a much underestimated component of global biodiversity, both in its diversity and in its potential to act as models for fundamental research in evolutionary biology and ecosystem studies. Freshwater organisms also reflect quality of water bodies and can thus be used to monitor changes in ecosystem health. The present book comprises a unique collection of primary research papers spanning a wide range of topics in aquatic biodiversity studies, and including a first global assessment of specific diversity of freshwater animals. The book also presents a section on the interaction between scientists and science policy managers. A target opinion paper lists priorities in aquatic biodiversity research for the next decade and several reactions from distinguished scientists discuss the relevance of these items from different points of view: fundamental ecology, taxonomy and systematics, needs of developing countries, present-day biodiversity policy at European and at global scales. It is believed that such a platform for the interaction between science and science policy is an absolute necessity for the efficient use of research budgets in the future.

Featuring chapters by experts from a range of fields, it addresses (i) risk factor analyses, and the geohydrological, climatic, natural, socio-economic, and anthropological factors related to the Sundarbans; (ii) strategies for sustainability in natural resource management in trans-boundary Sundarbans, cutting across political boundaries; (iii) improved agriculture, fisheries, and forestry practices and their impacts on the socio-economy for livelihood security; and (iv) a future road map for improvements. This book will be of value to those working in academia, as well as to experts and professionals in coastal zone planning and management.

Book Synopsis Aquaculture technologies in Bangladesh: An assessment of technical and economic performance and producer behavior by : Jahan, K.M.
Download or read book Aquaculture technologies in Bangladesh: An assessment of technical and economic performance and producer behavior written by Jahan, K.M. and published by WorldFish. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluates the performance of a wide range of aquaculture systems in Bangladesh. It is by far the largest of its kind attempted to date. The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the most important production systems, rather than to provide a nationally representative overview of the entire aquaculture sector of Bangladesh. As such, the study yields a huge amount of new information on production technologies that have never been thoroughly researched before. The study reveals an extremely diverse array of specialized, dynamic and rapidly evolving production technologies, adapted to a variety of market niches and local environmental conditions. This is a testament to the innovativeness of farmers and other value chain actors who have been the principal drivers of this development in Bangladesh. Data was collected from six geographical hubs. The survey was conducted from November 2011 to June 2012. Technological performance in terms of detailed input and output information, fish management practices, credit and marketing, and social and environmental issues were captured by the survey questionnaire, which had both open and closed format questions. The study generated insights that enable better understanding of aquaculture development in Bangladesh.
Book Synopsis Ecosystems and Integrated Water Resources Management in South Asia by : E. R. N. Gunawardena
Download or read book Ecosystems and Integrated Water Resources Management in South Asia written by E. R. N. Gunawardena and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an ecosystem perspective in addressing the water resource management issues in the South Asian region. It argues that aspects such as sources of water, its distribution and users; land–water interrelations; drivers of change such as laws, policies and institutions; management of issues and technologies related to water supply; institutional set-up; economic instruments such as pricing, taxes, subsidies; and economics of ecosystem services are crucial. Climate changes, melting of glaciers and polar ice caps, rising sea level and the increased frequency of extreme events, have to be factored into integrated management of water resources. This book addresses some of these major issues related to aquatic ecosystems and focuses on three major aspects: (a) concepts related to ecosystems, ecosystem services and their linkages with water; (b) human impacts on ecosystems, particularly the aquatic ecosystems, and their assessment; and (c) the management, including policy, governance and economics. Comprising new theories, research and case studies, the book will be useful those concerned with water resource management – professionals, students and researchers.
