The outputs of the working groups were further discussed during the concluding plenary. Book excerpt: Total shrimp production in Bangladesh increased from 14 773 tonnes in 1986 to 128 313 ton in 2014. In parallel with contribution of the shrimp sector to the local and national economy of the country, it has caused some negative impacts on local ecosystems. This includes deterioration of soil and water quality, depletion of mangrove forest, decrease in population of local species of fish among others. There have also been some socio-economic consequences on the livelihood patterns of people livin g in coastal areas. At this stage, a paradigm shift is needed away from current shrimp farming practices to a more holistic and integrated approach that accounts for environmental integrity and social cohesion. In this paper, the ongoing measures to improve and streamline environmental performance of shrimp farming in Bangladesh are analyzed and a number of measures are proposed.

Book excerpt: The Expert Consultation on the Assessment of Socio-economic Impacts of Aquaculture was held in Ankara, Turkey, from 4 to 8 February 2008. It identified the many positive and negative impacts of aquaculture with their far-reaching socio economic implications. While they agreed that multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework using analytical hierarchy process (AHP) as a measurement technique is a suitable method for assessing socio-economic impacts of aquaculture, experts recognized that other methods such as the costs benefits analysis (CBA) could also be used depending on circumstances. They recommended that case studies be carried out in a certain number of developed and developing countries on assessing the socio-economic impacts of aquaculture using AHP, CBA and another technique in order to test and compare the applicability and results of these methods. They also suggested developing a user guide on the implementation of these methods and build capacity in developing countries in using them, and identified other needs for future work in socio-economics of aquaculture.

This is a testament to the innovativeness of farmers and other value chain actors who have been the principal drivers of this development in Bangladesh. Data was collected from six geographical hubs. The survey was conducted from November 2011 to June 2012. Technological performance in terms of detailed input and output information, fish management practices, credit and marketing, and social and environmental issues were captured by the survey questionnaire, which had both open and closed format questions. The study generated insights that enable better understanding of aquaculture development in Bangladesh.
