This is also supported by the results of testing of the adhesive tensile specimens that did not show decrease in strength only an increase in ultimate strain. The freeze-thaw cycling in water did not result in any deterioration of the specimens' strength, most specimens actually acquired higher strength, due to moist curing of the concrete during the freeze-thaw cycling.

Book excerpt: Existing infrastructure in North America has now reached an age when it requires extensive repairs and upgrades which can often be expensive. A quick and effective solution that can also be economical is the use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP). Despite its promising short-term results, the long-term durability of FRP has not been investigated enough where designers can recommend the application with the same confidence as they have for traditional materials. Current research addresses this issue in detail. This report presents the durability test results of FRP laminates and FRP bonding characteristics. Specimens included 48 FRP coupons, 48 FRP-to-FRP single-lap-bonded specimens and 48 FRP-to-concrete prisms. These specimens were subjected to 300 freeze-thaw cycles and/or sustained load. After which, they were tested to failure for their post-exposure mechanical properties. In most cases, FRP and FRP bond were found to be durable, except bond stiffness suffered significant damages due to combined exposures.

Book excerpt: Deterioration of infra structure is one of the most pressing concerns facing today's engineering community. As a result, new rehabilitation techniques, such as external bonding of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) plates and sheets, are being developed. To apply these rehabilitation methods in Canada, the durability of the rehabilitated structures in cold regions must be assessed. This paper examines the effects of freeze-thaw cycling on the bond between FRP and concrete. An experimental investigation was conducted using both single lap pull-off and bond beam specimens. Only uniaxail carbon FRP strips were considered. The specimens were exposed to up to 300 feeze-thaw cycles consisting of 16 h of tfreezing and 8 h of thawing in water bath. After exposure, the specimens were tested to failure. The development of strain along the bond length and the failure mode are presented for both types of specimens. Load deflection curves are presented for the beam specimens. The results indicate that the bond between carbon FRP strips and concrete is not significantly damaged by up to 300 freeze-thaw cycles.

Book excerpt: The research on the structural performance of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) has shown the these materials haw great potential for application in concrete structures. Not enough test data, however, are available to predict the long-term performance of the and improved structures. Degradation problems can wise when polymers are exposed to heat, light, weathering, high-energy radiation, chemicals, and microorganisms. The objective of this research is to study the durability of FRP used in concrete structures by exposing the material to simulated environmental conditions in the laboratory. The conditions that were studied in this research project are freeze-thaw and ultraviolet radiation. Four types of specimen were studied for the freeze-thaw. The specimens are: (1) Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) coupons, (2) FRP to FRP single lap bonded panels, (3) FRP wrapped cylinders, and (4) FRP to concrete bonded prisms. Only the first two types of the were studied for the ultraviolet radiation. The results showed that the above exposures have minimal effect on the mechanical performance of Carbon- and Glass-FRP.

Book excerpt: Results of tensile tests on FRP coupons indicate that both epoxy and polyurethane FRP systems do not degrade significantly under environmental exposure. However, flexural tests on the FRP strengthened concrete beams indicate that bond between FRP and concrete shows significant degradation, especially for aqueous exposure. Moreover, a protective coating suppresses the measured degradation. Also, experimental load-displacement curves for control beams show excellent agreement with numerical load-displacement curves obtained using the proposed bond model. Finally, a bond-slip model is predicted for concrete leachate conditioned beams by matching load-displacement curves for those beams with numerical load-displacement curves.

Book excerpt: Composite materials, produced from polymer resins and high strength fibers, have the potential to be widely used in construction because of their corrosion resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio, However, such environmental factors as extreme temperature fluctuation and water absorption adversely affect the material properties of composite materials produced from polymers. Cycles of freezing and thawing temperatures magnify the effects of water absorption. For use in highway structures, composite materials must be as durable as steel and concrete. Therefore, the behavior of composite materials subjected to cycles of freezing and thawing needs to be characterized. Two commercially available composite systems, both reinforced with fiberglass and produced by the pultrusion process, were studied. One system was produced with isophthalic polyester, the other with vinyl ester. Coupons were cut from plate stock and placed in a solution of water and 2% sodium chloride and subjected to cycles of freezing and thawing. Periodically, coupons were removed and tested in flexure to failure. Flexural strength values at various numbers of freeze-thaw cycles were compared to the strengths of virgin coupons. Prior to destructive testing, coupons were tested to determine the dynamic modulus of elasticity. Dynamic modulus values at various numbers of freeze-thaw cycles were compared to virgin values. Results indicate a significant loss of flexural strength (20% 30%), rigidity, and toughness after 300 cycles. Data from dynamic modulus measurements when compared to modulus of elasticity calculations taken from load-deflection data, may not be an appropriate measure of durability for composites.

Book excerpt: In recent years, a modified method to strengthen reinforced concrete (RC) structures has emerged involving application of fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) in the 'near surface' of a member. The near surface mounted (NSM) method entails placing a pre-cured FRP bar, rod, strip, or plate, along with an adhesive into a pre-cut groove or slot in the cover of a member. Advantages of the NSM technique over externally bonded (EB) systems include minimal surface preparation and installation time, the ability to anchor the FRP into an adjacent member, superior protection from mechanical and environmental damage, and superior bond properties. Although a number of laboratory studies, field applications, and experimental field projects have employed the NSM FRP strengthening technique, none of these have been performed in a climate where cold environments and freeze-thaw cycling could cause adverse effects. This thesis presents the results of an experimental program to investigate the flexural and bond performance and freeze-thaw durability of a specific NSM carbon/vinylester FRP tape strengthening system through a series of tests on strengthened slab strips and a series of pull-out bond tests. The effects of adhesive type (cementitious or epoxy) and exposure condition (room temperature, freeze-thaw, sustained load, or freeze-thaw under sustained load) are examined. The results indicate no discernable negative impacts on the performance of the grout strengthened members after exposure to freeze-thaw cycles and/or sustained load. The slab strips strengthened with epoxy adhesive displayed minor changes in ultimate load (less than three percent) after exposure to freeze-thaw cycles or a period of sustained load, while the combined effect of freeze-thaw cycles and sustained load produced an average reduction in ultimate load of eight percent. The epoxy adhesive strengthened pull-out bond tests experienced a 27% average drop in ultimate load after 150 freeze-thaw cycles. These results suggest that additional research on the combined effects of sustained load and freeze-thaw cycling are warranted, particularly for NSM strengthening applications using epoxy adhesives.

Book excerpt: Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been widely used as externally epoxy-bonded reinforcement for repair and retrofit of existing concrete structures. As the use of CFRP in construction increases, it is essential to consider the long term behavior. In this study, concrete specimens with externally bonded CFRP composite systems were exposed to various accelerated ageing environments: different elevated temperature water immersion, varying relative humidity exposure, real-time solar exposure, pressurized hygrothermal exposure, and fatigue loading. Three-point loading test and direct tension test were used to evaluate the flexural and tensile strength of CFRP specimens. This research recommends that the durability strength reduction factor be defined as the ratio of the flexural strength of a test specimen after exposure for 60 days at 60C to the strength of a control specimen at the initiation of exposure. Test specimens, exposure environments, testing procedures, and field application environments are selected to assure uniform reporting, testing and application of durability strength reduction factors. Two exposure environments are recommended for design, wet and air. Water can diffuse through concrete and accumulate on the epoxy/concrete interface in a wet environment and is the default condition for design. An air environment precludes water accumulation but requires engineering design and validation to guarantee compliance. The resulting durability strength reduction factor may be used to (a) calculate the reduced strength for environmental exposure, (b) qualify a specific CFRP system, (c) compare durability reduction factors to those provided by system suppliers, and (d) confirm compliance with project specifications.
