Book excerpt: The durability of three types of fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP plate, CFRP fabric, and GFRP fabric) used for strengthening concrete structures was evaluated. Both material and bond specimens were subjected to conditioning treatments that are likely to occur in civil infrastructure. Samples were exposed to 100% humidity, alkalinity, salt water, dry heat, freeze/thaw cycling, vehicle fuel, and UV radiation for various durations and then were tested and compared to baseline sample values to determine if deterioration took place at a material or bond level. The CFRP plate tensile specimens experienced an increase in strength from the benefits of a post-curing period while at the same time experienced a decrease in thickness. The decrease in thickness was most likely due to chemical degradation of the resin matrix, and/or as a result of post-curing. The CFRP fabric experienced a post-curing period for a much shorter duration than the plate. The bond specimens exposed to elevated temperatures, moisture, and chemical solutions suffered an apparent trend of deterioration along the bond line, which progressed into material failure for specimens exposed for longer durations. The GFRP fabric bond specimens followed a trend similar to the CFRP fabric specimens when exposed to moisture and chemical solutions. The rate of deterioration due to the chemical attack of alkalinity was much faster than the attack due to salt water. Reinforced concrete beams strengthened with the three materials were exposed to a combined treatment of freeze/thaw cycling and UV radiation and then tested in flexure and compared to the performance of non-conditioned strengthened beams. The GFRP fabric specimens were the only beams impacted by the conditioning. The treatment resulted in fiber surface pitting and, based on the observed failure modes, increased brittleness of the material.

Experimental investigation consisted of testing a total of seventy eight RC beams under various environmental conditions such as 100% humidity, dry-heat, salt-water and alkaline solutions, freeze-thaw and thermal expansion cycles, and repeated load effects. Accelerated aging procedures were used to correlate the strength and stiffness degradation as per ASTM standards. All the test beams were subjected to ultimate load test after appropriate environmental conditioning. A durability based design approach for analysis and design of externally strengthened beams is also presented.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been completed which determines the physiochemical mechanisms of environmental durability and degradation of graphite-epoxy (Thornel T300 in 5208 epoxy) and fiber glass-epoxy S-2 glass in 5208 epoxy) under hydro-thermal (high moisture and temperature) exposure. Surface energy and moisture diffusion analysis provide nondestructive test methods which detect irreversible degradatiion of the fiber-matrix interface. Dynamic mechanical damping detects reversible volumetric plasticization effect on modulus, and the interlaminar shear strength and transfibrous fracture energy distributions. A composite durability characterization program is demonstrated which effectively combines preventative nondestructive evaluation (PNDE) with environmental failure and micromechanics analysis of composite structural reliability.

Book excerpt: Composite material systems are the basis for much of the natural world around us and are rapidly becoming the basis for many modern engineering components. A controlling feature for the general use of such systems is their damage tolerance, durability and reliability. The present book is a comprehensive cross section of the state of the art in the field of the durability of polymer-based, composite, and adhesive systems. As such, it is of special value to researchers concerned with the frontier of the field, to students concerned with the substance of the subject, and to the applied community concerned with the finding methodologies that make it possible to design safe and durable engineering components using material systems.

Book excerpt: The repair of deteriorated, damaged and substandard civil infrastructures has become one of the most important issues for the civil engineer worldwide. This important book discusses the use of externally-bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites to strengthen, rehabilitate and retrofit civil engineering structures, covering such aspects as material behaviour, structural design and quality assurance. The first three chapters of the book review structurally-deficient civil engineering infrastructure, including concrete, metallic, masonry and timber structures. FRP composites used in rehabilitation and surface preparation of the component materials are also reviewed. The next four chapters deal with the design of FRP systems for the flexural and shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and the strengthening of RC columns. The following two chapters examine the strengthening of metallic and masonry structures with FRP composites. The last four chapters of the book are devoted to practical considerations in the flexural strengthening of beams with unstressed and prestressed FRP plates, durability of externally bonded FRP composite systems, quality assurance and control, maintenance, repair, and case studies. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Strengthening and rehabilitation of civil infrastructures using fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is a valuable reference guide for engineers, scientists and technical personnel in civil and structural engineering working on the rehabilitation and strengthening of the civil infrastructure. Reviews the use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in structurally damaged and sub-standard civil engineering structures Examines the role and benefits of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in different types of structures such as masonry and metallic strengthening Covers practical considerations including material behaviour, structural design and quality assurance
