Book excerpt: The effects of environment on fatigue behavior are quite intimately related to such test variables as stress intensity, cyclic frequency, and temperature. The effect of these variables has been shown to be quite complex. However, a consistent pattern of behavior is beginning to emerge which, it is hoped, will lead to a considerably changed understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process. It is considered probable that an increased understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process will also contribute measureably to an improved understanding of general fatigue processes. Material variables such as composition, directionality of properties, and microstructure, have important effects on corrosion-fatigue behavior of aluminum alloys. However, it appears that these variables, at least in gaseous environments, may be important largely because of their effects on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. On the other hand, studies in seawater suggest that these variables become increasingly important as the corrosive nature of the environment increases. This memorandum discusses in detail the effects of both test variables and material variables on corrosion fatigue. In addition, current theories of corrosion-fatigue mechanisms are outlined, and several methods of preventing corrosion fatigue are suggested. (Author).

Book excerpt: Axial fatigue tests were performed on a 7075-T6 aluminum alloy in tension-compression and under superimposed positive mean stresses in dry air and in aqueous 0.5N NaCl solution. Both corrosive environments and positive mean stresses resulted in lower fatigue lives but no interaction between these variables was observed. Crack initiation in air occurred at electropolish pits at inclusion/alloy interfaces and propagated primarily in a Stage I (crystallographic) mode. A model for environment assisted cracking is presented which suggests that hydrogen induced cleavage is responsible for the degradation in fatigue properties of this alloy. It is the mechanical degradation of a material under the joint action of corrosion and cyclic loading. Nearly all engineering structures experience some form of alternating stress, and are exposed to harmful environments during their service life. The environment plays a significant role in the fatigue of high-strength structural materials like steel, aluminum alloys and titanium alloys. Materials with high specific strength are being developed to meet the requirements of advancing technology. However, their usefulness depends to a large extent on the extent to which they resist corrosion fatigue. The effects of corrosive environments on the fatigue behavior of metals were studied as early as 1930. The phenomenon should not be confused with stress corrosion cracking, where corrosion (such as pitting) leads to the development of brittle cracks, growth and failure. The only requirement for corrosion fatigue is that the sample be under tensile stress.

Book excerpt: The recently developed powder metallurgy (P/M) alloy X7091 (formerly CT91) has strength characteristics similar to ingot metallurgy (I/M) 7000 series alloys. However, its stress corrosion cracking resistance has been reported to be far superior to the conventional ingot-processed alloys. This suggests that P/M alloy X7091 may have far better corrosion fatigue behavior than I/M 7075-T651. Fatigue crack growth rates between 2.5 x 10-8 and 2.5 x 10-6 m/cycle (10-6 and 10-4 in./cycle) were measured for specimens in both the S-T and T-L orientations. In order to determine the effect of environment on the fatigue crack growth rates, tests were conducted in both an innocuous and an aggressive environment (R = 0.5; f = 0.2 Hz). Since it is known that the fatigue crack growth rates of aluminum alloys are sensitive to small amounts of water vapor, gaseous nitrogen with a dew point of -60°C (-75°F) was chosen as the innocuous environment. An aerated 31⁄2% NaCl solution was used as the corrosive environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that environment plays a very important role in fatigue failures. In some cases only crack propagation rates are affected; however, for many others all of the steps leading to failure, pre-initiation deformation, crack initiation and crack propagation are affected. For still other cases, only the crack initiation and early propagation processes are affected. This paper attempts to evaluate the mechanisms which have been proposed for environmental effects on the early stages of fatigue damage, including crack initiation and early propagation in gaseous and in aqueous environments. Evidence is presented which indicates that there is no unifying theory of environmental fatigue, but that each alloy/environment couple may exhibit significantly different behavior, depending on factors such as thermodynamics and kinetics as well as microstructure, slip character, etc. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of mechanical structures with improved and predictable durability cannot be achieved without a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of fatigue damage and more specifically the relationships between the microstructure of materials and their fatigue properties. Written by leading experts in the field, this book (which is complementary to Fatigue of Materials and Structures: Application to Damage and Design, also edited by Claude Bathias and André Pineau), provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, polymers and composites. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major classes of materials or to different types of fatigue damage, thereby providing overall coverage of the field. The book deals with crack initiation, crack growth, low-cycle fatigue, gigacycle fatigue, shorts cracks, fatigue micromechanisms and the local approach to fatigue damage, corrosion fatigue, environmental effects and variable amplitude loadings, and will be an important and much used reference for students, practicing engineers and researchers studying fracture and fatigue in numerous areas of mechanical, structural, civil, design, nuclear, and aerospace engineering as well as materials science.
