Book Synopsis Sustainable Development Strategies by : Barry Dalal-Clayton
Download or read book Sustainable Development Strategies written by Barry Dalal-Clayton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a cornerstone resource for a wide range of organizations and individuals concerned with sustainable development at national or local levels, as well as for international organizations concerned with supporting such development. Whilst the focus is on integrated strategies for sustainable development, the approaches and methods covered are equally relevant to poverty reduction, environmental and sectoral strategies, programme development and review. Agenda 21 called for all countries to develop sustainable development strategies. For such strategies to be effective there needs to be a real commitment. In every country, government at all levels, the private sector, and civil society, must work together in a true partnership, in transparent ways which enable genuine stakeholder participation. The necessary mechanisms and processes need to be coordinated to enable continuous learning and improvement. This resource book provides flexible, non-prescriptive guidance on how to develop, assess and implement national sustainable development strategies. It sets out principles and ideas on process and methods, and suggests how these can be used. It is based on an analysis of past and current practice, drawing directly from experience in both developed and developing countries. Following a discussion of the nature and challenges of sustainable development and the need for strategic responses to them, the heart of the book covers the main tasks in strategy processes. Individual chapters offer a rich range of guidance, ideas and case studies.
Book Synopsis Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Food Security in South Asia by : Nagesh Kumar
Download or read book Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Food Security in South Asia written by Nagesh Kumar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume foregrounds the importance of regional cooperation in the context of food security challenges in South Asia. South Asia holds the key to global achievement of SDG targets of ending hunger and malnutrition – it accounts for nearly one-third of food-insecure people on the planet, with every third child suffering from stunting due to malnutrition. Similar food preferences, production systems, and the transboundary nature of agrarian ecosystems call for coordinated action by South Asian countries, complementing national actions dealing with food security challenges. In this volume, leading experts discuss the perspectives of key South Asian countries in leveraging regional cooperation for addressing food security challenges and reflect on the potential of cooperative actions in different areas. The book proposes a ten-point regional policy agenda covering cooperation for combatting climate change, regional trade liberalization, operationalization of regional food reserves, leveraging technology, sharing of good practices, regional institution building, coordinated positions in multilateral trade negotiations, addressing trans-boundary outbreak of livestock diseases, strengthening food safety standards, and the management of shared natural resources. A key volume on accomplishing SDGs in the South Asian context, this book will be of immense interest to policy makers, researchers, and development practitioners. It is also essential reading for scholars and researchers in the areas of development studies, South Asia studies, food security, environment and sustainability.
Book Synopsis The Future of South-South Economic Relations by : Adil Najam
Download or read book The Future of South-South Economic Relations written by Adil Najam and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, it has become apparent that South-South economic relations are increasing, and will continue to do so. There will be more trade agreements and more trade, more economic alliances and more political alliances with economic goals, more investment flows and an increasing acknowledgement that the Global South has more to offer than it has in the past. These new economics relations have great potential, both for harm and for good. In the absence of directed policies and intentional actors, imbalances of power and growing gaps in development will persist. With the right policies in place, however, these relationships could forge a new global order with greater economic and political equality. Covering a wide range of topics, including regional trade integration in Africa, the environmental impact of increased South-South trade, the changing patterns of South-South investment, and the effect of conflict on trade in South Asia, this ground-breaking volume presents an analysis of South-South economic relations, and how they might impact and be impacted by the rest of the world.

Download or read book No-Win War written by Zahid Hussain and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the post-9/11 relations between the US and Pakistan. The growing divergence between Washington and Islamabad has taken an already uneasy alliance to a point of estrangement. Yet, a complete breakup is not an option. The underlying cause of the tension, within the partnership the two had entered on 13 September 2001, has never been fully understood. What is rarely discussed is how Pakistan's decision to ally itself with the US pushed the country into a war with itself; the cost of Pakistan's tight roping between alignment with the US and old links with the Afghan Taliban; and its long-term implications for the region and global security. This book elucidates implications for Afghanistan in the so-called war on terror while revealing US and Pakistan's foreign policy initiatives. The author explores all this through little known facts and through the players involved in this cloak and dagger game. The book tells the story behind the headlines: how equivocal is ISI's break with the Afghan Taliban fighting the coalition forces in Afghanistan; the shootout in Lahore involving a CIA agent; and the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Download or read book Linking Smallholder Producers to Modern Agri-Food Chains: Case Studies from South Asia, Southeast Asia and China written by Vijay Paul Sharma and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication examines the processes and impact of market restructuring through comparative in-depth empirical case studies in selected Asian countries, namely, China,India, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. These countries represent both a broad geographic coverage and a range of stages of market concentration in the region. The country papers address important questions such as what determines the participation of producers in different channels, what is the impact of farmer participation on incomes and what institutional, technological, economic and other reforms are necessary to enhance their effective participation in the emerging and restructuring markets. The case studies attempt to identify major factors that affect smallholder producers’ access to output markets, input markets, e.g. seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, technology and services such as credit, extension, insurance. Each case study has tried to analyse one specific innovation and these innovations are specific arrangements built on public policies, business initiatives, collective/group action by small-scale producers, etc. that appear to have played a positive role in supporting greater inclusion. The studies aim to derive models, strategies and policy principles to guide public and private sector players in promoting greater participation of small-scale producers in dynamic markets.

Book Synopsis The Indus Basin of Pakistan by : Winston H. Yu
Download or read book The Indus Basin of Pakistan written by Winston H. Yu and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, Indus basin of Pakistan: the impacts of climate risks on water and agriculture was undertaken at a pivotal time in the region. The weak summer monsoon in 2009 created drought conditions throughout the country. This followed an already tenuous situation for many rural households faced with high fuel and fertilizer costs and the impacts of rising global food prices. Then catastrophic monsoon flooding in 2010 affected over 20 million people, devastating their housing, infrastructure, and crops. Damages from this single flood event were estimated at US dollar 10 billion, half of which were losses in the agriculture sector. Notwithstanding the debate as to whether these observed extremes are evidence of climate change, an investigation is needed regarding the extent to which the country is resilient to these shocks. It is thus timely, if not critical, to focus on climate risks for water, agriculture, and food security in the Indus basin of Pakistan.
Book Synopsis Belt and Road Initiative and South Asia by : Kalyan Raj Sharma
Download or read book Belt and Road Initiative and South Asia written by Kalyan Raj Sharma and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has been an obscure concept, and it remains difficult to distinguish what BRI is and isn’t, making it difficult for many governments and global corporations to properly participate in it. I am delighted to present the opinions and perspectives of many eminent researchers, professors and experts from various countries on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The book contains 11 chapters which are written by distinguished researchers and practitioners from various parts of Asia. While these 11 chapters discuss the many characteristics of the BRI, including advantages and costs, they also convey the lessons that many other Southeast Asian countries have learned. Each chapter offers valueable lessons to the countries that have yet to participate in the initiatives.
