Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism has huge significance as a global economic and social phenomenon, and given the growing reliance on the industry by service-dependent economies around the world, the lack of focus on tourism planning and development in South Asia is surprising. Current issues including social, environmental and cultural aspects underpinned by security challenges have defined the tourism development narratives in many South Asian countries over the last decades and lead to fluid demand and supply patterns. The appetite for and reliance on tourism growth is seen regardless of the numerous challenges faced by the region. Despite a rich and steady history of tourism and demand driven by numerous pull-destinations, most South Asian countries have not invested or benefitted from global tourism growth trends.

Book excerpt: This volume synthesizes critical environmental challenges of dynamic earth and human environment systems in South Asia emphasizing geographical dimensions. It deals with spaceborne monitoring, climate, ecohydrology, forests and biodiversity, land-use and land-cover change (LUCC), natural hazards, and disasters in order to contribute towards a sustainable future. The contributions range from traditional field techniques to the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems. The book integrates environmental attributes relating the past, present, and future of South Asia broadly based on biophysical and human dimensions in spatio-temporal perspectives. The monitoring of natural hazards and climate issues is considered a vital component in the context of environmental geography, especially in observation and understanding of climate and water-induced disasters. It is important to communicate the advances in geoscience techniques to increase the resilience of the vulnerable society of South Asia and to promote livelihood security. The sustainability of South Asia depends strongly on the earth environment, and thus the development of geo-environmental monitoring is critical for a better understanding of our living environment. The aim of the book is to present dynamic aspects of environmental geography to contribute to future earth initiatives in South Asia.

Book Synopsis Environmental Security and Gender by : Nicole Detraz
Download or read book Environmental Security and Gender written by Nicole Detraz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years scholars, policymakers, and the media have increasingly recognized the links between both traditional and non-traditional security issues and the changing condition of the global environment. Concepts such as 'environmental security' and 'resource conflict' have been used to hint at these significant linkages. While there has been a good deal of scholarly work conducted that seeks to identify the ways that actors link these concepts, there has been little examination of the intersection between approaches to environmental security and gender. This book explores this intersection to provide an insight into the gendered nature of both global environmental politics and security studies. It examines how the issues of security and the environment are linked to theory and practice, and the extent to which gender informs these discussions. By adopting a feminist environmental security discourse, this book provides crucial redefinitions of key concepts and offers new insights into the ways we understand security-environment connections. Case studies evaluate if, and how, environment and security discourses are being used to understand a range of environmental issues, and how a feminist environmental security discourse contributes to our understanding of security-environment connections. This multidisciplinary volume draws on literature from the environmental sciences, security studies and sociology to highlight the complex human insecurities that often accompany environmental change. As conceptualizations of security continue to shift and broaden to include environmental issues and concerns, it is imperative that gender informs the debate.
Book Synopsis Natural Resource Management in South Asia by : Actionaid
Download or read book Natural Resource Management in South Asia written by Actionaid and published by Pearson Education India. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Resource Management in South Asia deals with the problems in the management of natural resources in South Asia, and tries to work towards building a collective approach for addressing those problems. It raises reasonable concerns and queries the manner in which developmental polices are implemented, without undermining the importance of the economic development process. Examined in detail from a people-centric view, the topics in this volume include energy, land, biodiversity, water and the atmosphere. There is also a separate chapter on Afghanistan that focusses on the challenges faced by the country in this regard. The volume makes an effort to examine options to ensure food and water security in South Asia, and to suggest an alternative policy framework in ensuring a sustainable environment. It also suggests ways in which natural resources can be utilized for the maximum benefit of the people.
