Book excerpt: Este libro es una introducción para la comprensión de la realidad de las personas mayores, integrando lo social, lo psicológico y lo físico desde tres perspectivas diferentes, pero complementarias, que podríamos resumir como percepciones, vivencias y alternativas sobre el proceso de envejecimiento. De este modo, entendemos: 1. Las percepciones sociales sobre la vejez, o cómo la sociedad percibe y valora diferentes aspectos significativos sobre las personas mayores, comenzando por la propia vejez y descendiendo a aspectos más concretos como la actividad-inactividad, la sexualidad, el papel de la familia, los servicios sociales y un largo etcétera de temas que no sólo nos permiten comprender mejor el entorno social, político y económico que rodea al proceso de envejecimiento, sino que condiciona también la propia autopercepción de los mayores. 2. La vivencia de la vejez, o la forma en que las personas mayores enfrentan su situación social, económica y personal. Los aspectos que condicionan sus actitudes, las estrategias vitales que desarrollan o la falta de ellas, manifestadas, nuevamente, a través de las múltiples dimensiones que les afectan: utilización del tiempo, relaciones personales, adecuación al entorno, etc. 3. Salud y bienestar en la vejez, es decir, una visión sobre los recursos internos y externos con que cuentan las personas mayores para enfrentar su vida de forma plena: los cuidados físicos, los recursos sociosanitarios, el desarrollo de actitudes positivas hacia sí mismos y hacia su entorno, los posibles cambios sociales orientados a mejorar el entorno y el lugar de los mayores en nuestra sociedad. Son numerosas las cuestiones que atraviesan el fenómeno del envejecimiento, como lo son también los enfoques desde los que pueden analizarse. En las páginas que siguen, se habla del significado de la vejez, de las formas de convivencia, soledad y relaciones sociales en la vejez, de la promoción de la salud y la prevención de la enfermedad en los ancianos, de las habilidades de comunicación con las personas mayores, de la relación existente entre actividad física y deportiva de los mayores, de una de las patologías de mayor prevalencia en la actualidad, el Alzheimer, y, por último, de la relación entre enfermedad terminal y vejez y de los cuidados al final de la vida.

Se revisan los significados de la edad; la institucionalización de la trayectoria vital alrededor del trabajo; las posturas polarizadas frente a la vejez entre fatalidad y devenir; la vejez como objeto de la gerontología social; la invención de las categorías "tercera edad", "envejecimiento activo" y "envejecimiento positivo", y algunos estudios sobre longevidad. Se advierten los riesgos de la medicalización de la vejez y del uso de las nociones de vulnerabilidad, fragilidad, dependencia y resiliencia. Se analizan los vínculos con la pareja, la familia, los cuidadores y la red social. Se considera que a pesar de los condicionamientos biológicos y socioculturales existe un margen de autonomía individual para asumir la vejez, por lo cual es ilusorio predecir absolutamente el proceso de envejecimiento y, más aún, estandarizado. Por el contrario, se reconocen diversas formas de envejecer, como lo testimonian las narraciones biográficas producto de la investigación.
