Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work for yourself in just one week with Britain's most dynamic entrepreneur 'Everybody wants to be an entrepreneur. Every single day of my life I am bombarded by people with pitches. But 90% of new businesses fail, because their founders failed to ask themselves the simplest of questions. I can save you years of wasted time and thousands of pounds of wasted money by giving you the ammunition to ask the right questions, and helping you make the decision that is right for you. I will show you how to spend a maximum of seven days deciding if your idea is workable and bankable. How to say 'I'm in', but equally importantly, to have the courage to say 'I'm out'. How to become your own Dragon. Each piece of advice in this book is based on my thirty years of starting businesses. You will find all the fundamental ingredients for any new company, whatever sector you want to be in, whatever size of business you have in mind, along with the tools to make it work. Answer all the tough questions I am going to get you to ask yourself and you will have a business that genuinely has a chance of success. You can be one of the 10% of businesses that do make it.' - James Caan. James Caan is one of the UK's most successful and dynamic entrepreneurs, having built and sold businesses since 1985. After dropping out of school at sixteen and starting his first business in a Pall Mall broom cupboard - armed with little more than charm and his father's advice - Caan went on to make his fortune in the recruitment industry, founding the Alexander Mann Group, a company with a turnover of £130m. A 2003 graduate of Harvard Business School, Caan's most recent endeavour has been to set up private equity firm Hamilton Bradshaw. Caan hit our screens when he joined the panel of the BBC's Dragons' Den in 2007. He is a regular in the national and business press, advises on various Government programmes, and initiates numerous philanthropic projects via the James Caan Foundation.

It then suggests that much of the economic activity and many of the structures of modern business are inhumane. In response to this possibility, the book examines the nature of the humane in society and business and reviews the literature, beliefs, and standards of human behavior that would lead to the growth of a truly humane economy. Questions are raised about the virtue of current structure and practice. A strikingly positive proposition underlies the critique: new entrepreneurial ventures are by their nature humane. The way to make the economy and the practice of business more humane is not to encourage a routinized script of business ethics but instead to permit entrepreneurs to follow their desire to create and to build. This desire is natural to human beings and therefore deeply humane.

Book excerpt: Prepare to enter the privileged world of the gentleman's club, a world where fantasy, desire, and money mix to form a potent and volatile reality that surpasses fiction at every turn. Now prepare to see this world through the eyes of the man who has seen more than anyone, from the true personalities of the women performing on stage to what really goes on behind the stage. No other autobiography comes anywhere close to putting the reader into what life is really like on the erotic side of the fast track, to be down for the count and then back in action running stronger and harder than ever. So, what are you waiting for? Let the valet take your car and step inside, let your eyes adjust to the light, and then prepare to have hem opened wide by the sights, sounds, and sensations found within the seductive realm of the modern gentleman's club. And the story of the gentleman who brought it all to life; a titillating tale that's part Mickey Spillane, part Fortune 500, and entertaining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biographical novel recounts the extraordinary intuitions of the Italian-American visionary founder of the world’s largest bank, the Bank of America. Amadeo Peter, or AP for his San Francisco friends, dedicated his life to generate wealth for the people of his home town, in particular for the Italian immigrant’s community. He was an innovator and humanist, who always put the common good ahead of personal gain. He revolutionized the banking system when he financed the reconstruction of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake by making micro-loans to hundreds of Italian immigrants lacking collateral. The other banks, which required collateral in order to make a loan, were unable to put the money into circulation. He was a visionary in the film industry, financing the movie, The Kid, by an unknown and extravagant Charlie Chaplin who was turned down by other banks. It was the first time a loan was granted without interest, and repaid from box office revenues. The same happened with Walt Disney for his masterpiece, Snow White. In addition, Giannini realized the potential of the new audio technology developed by two young inventors, Bill Hewlett and David Packard, and put them in touch with Disney for his following productions, and financed the industry that the two entrepreneurs began in a garage in Palo Alto. Another successful project financed by Giannini’s bank was the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, designed by Joseph Strauss, an engineer without solid credentials, as a daring steel structure. The loan was granted without interest, with the understanding that it would be repaid from toll revenues. And it did, many times over. Giannini revealed his acumen as a venture capitalist when he persuaded Henry Kaiser to convert his enterprise from the construction of roads and bridges to ship building. During WWII, with Giannini’s encouragement, the shipyard was able to build 24 ships in record time, which were used to transport the troops to Europe. After the war, Giannini’s bank contributed $37M to Italy’s reconstruction, one year in advance of the Marshall Plan. And much more...This book tells it all.

Book excerpt: The first thought after any arrest is usually, how long will it take to get out? Whether in jail or prison, your sole focus is getting out. Recent statistics shows that three out of every four persons incarcerated always end up returning behind bars within the first three years of release. A large percentage of these people are from low-income communities where access to financial capital, education, and job opportunities are limited, and family ends up getting stuck in a deep cycle of poverty that they found extremely difficult to break out from. Arrested for crimes often sponsored by poverty and the dire economic conditions that defined them, they are taken through a criminal justice system that is far more interested in keeping them in the poverty-incarceration cycle than rehabilitating them and giving them a better chance at life. With no income and criminal history after release, they are unable to pay for food, housing, and health needs. And what happens eventually? They slip back into a life of crime, and the cycle continues. It is high time we nullified this poverty-incarceration two-feeder system. How? By dealing with the root, which is poverty. So how do you break the cycle of poverty? You may want to get out of jail or prison but are you ready to get out of poverty. How? The answers are found here in learning how to experience your own economic development post-incarceration. Do you feel stuck? Are you tired of going in and out of jail? Or are you an ex-offender who have found it difficult to progress because of barriers associated with your criminal history? This book is the clear road map to creating generational wealth and living the kind of life you deserve. This book is the guide to finding a way up not just a way out.

Book excerpt: The unforeseeably complex socio-economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century must be tackled by placing faith in the power of mankind to integrate established wisdom and new knowledge, and in our ability to collaborate for a sustainable future. Departing from this, a global 2011 conference debating papers devoted to the impact of ancient philosophy, focusing on Confucius and Aristotle, in modern leadership and management was organized by Hanban, the Athens University of Economics & Business, and the University of International Economics & Business, Beijing, China. A rich sourcebook for a broad audience, this unique volume presents the wide array of conference contributions by international thought-leaders. Departing from a foundation of general concepts of ethics and leadership the book then delves into questions about how philosophy shape emerging economic and business systems, to end with direct lessons from ancient philosophy for contemporary business challenges.

Book excerpt: An eye-opening exploration of blood, the lifegiving substance with the power of taboo, the value of diamonds and the promise of breakthrough science Blood carries life, yet the sight of it makes people faint. It is a waste product and a commodity pricier than oil. It can save lives and transmit deadly infections. Each one of us has roughly nine pints of it, yet many don’t even know their own blood type. And for all its ubiquitousness, the few tablespoons of blood discharged by 800 million women are still regarded as taboo: menstruation is perhaps the single most demonized biological event. Rose George, author of The Big Necessity, is renowned for her intrepid work on topics that are invisible but vitally important. In Nine Pints, she takes us from ancient practices of bloodletting to the breakthough of the "liquid biopsy," which promises to diagnose cancer and other diseases with a simple blood test. She introduces Janet Vaughan, who set up the world’s first system of mass blood donation during the Blitz, and Arunachalam Muruganantham, known as “Menstrual Man” for his work on sanitary pads for developing countries. She probes the lucrative business of plasma transfusions, in which the US is known as the “OPEC of plasma.” And she looks to the future, as researchers seek to bring synthetic blood to a hospital near you. Spanning science and politics, stories and global epidemics, Nine Pints reveals our life's blood in an entirely new light. Nine Pints was named one of Bill Gates recommended summer reading titles for 2019.
